I hear all stores have been forced to close on Valencia street due to car restrictions because of new bike lanes. Is it true. I lived in SF between 2003-2006, off Valencia and Market St. Great memories! But have heard a lot of the decline of SF and so many businesses closed and left, very sad.

I grew up in Westwood Park. Miramar at Wildwood to be exact, (but way back in the 60’s). The changes to the neighborhoods seem significant. Ocean Avenue is absent the sense of community, charm, and character that I remember. I have always maintained that the area was a largely a self-contained town, within a city. An occasional trip to Stonestown, or G.E.T. , were just about the only places one might need to visit.

You forgot. The person operating the streetcar is not called the driver. He's the Operator or Motorman. The PCC car you rode on to the end of the F Line at Castro & Market was purchased from N. J. Transit in Newark, New Jersey. It was painted in the D. C. Transit paint scheme from Washington, D. C. The ex-Newark cars have window cranks and openable back windows. The ex-Philadelphia PCC cars have latch windows and sealed back windows. I rode those cars many times in Newark and in Philadelphia years ago. In Philly, they were called trolleys. Philly calls their electric buses with the twin trolley poles on top trackless trolleys. MUNI calls them trolley coaches. MUNI calls their diesel buses motor coaches.

The Boat Tram was not in testing. It was finished for the day and was heading back to the car barn. That's what's known as a pull-in. Generally, they'll let you ride on a pull-in back to the barn. Since they had to stop for the traffic light anyway and you got to speak to them, you should have asked the Motorman and Conductor if you could ride back to the barn with them.. Chances are they would have taken you. But you would have been on your own from there and you should have told them you understood that. The Boat Tram operates "fare free" on the Embarcadero between the Ferry Building and Pier 39. You can ride: Sundays and Mondays through October 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. And by the way, the person operating MUNI streetcars and light rail cars is called the Motorman or Operator. The term is "not" driver !! You operate a rail car, not drive it. I'm sure you want to be accurate.

When I was a kid the City College and the reservoirs were one of our stomping grounds where blazed around on our bikes, later the reservoirs became our motorcycle playground , the campus cops didn’t appreciate it. When you peaked into the Mission Dolores Cemetery over by the wall is the grave of Arguello one of the relatives of my friend who I’m visiting, a native Californian moved to Texas.

The Mermaid has an interesting story. A young Japanese man reportedly without much sailing experience sailed from Japan to Aquatic Park, now in his 80s (I believe) completed the round trip for S.F. to Japan in another small sailboat last year. The sure was a lot of dollar value tied up in the Low Riders.
