My buddy Joe's third and best outing so far on the Hobie 16, although I almost sacrificed him to Neptune a few times : )

Anticipating that I can't sustain aggressive sailing like this for too many more years certainly factored into why I learned to sail larger, more comfortable yachts. But for now, as long as there's Advil waiting at home, it's hammer time.

I've been neglecting my cat for a few months, so it felt great to knife through the water again. Not much aerial action here, but a fun sail in 6-8 knot winds and a classic San Diego day.

We survived our first real yacht sail, venturing into open ocean off the tip of Point Loma. As you may know, I've been working toward sailing larger boats and finally ready to skipper up to 32' yachts. A few weeks of down time recouping from some physical ailments kept me off the water, but I finally managed to hobble through a sail on a gorgeously crisp afternoon. New sailing challenges await next month, body permitting. Stay tuned.

Kudos to my buddy Joe for coming out on a drizzly, gloomy Monday afternoon, conditions where most people would opt out. The anticipated strong winds were a no-show, but the easy sail allowed Joe to practice his crewing skills and an opportunity for us to catch-up on life. This was Joe's second sail on my Hobie 16, and he handled the lines quite well tack after tack. Possible regatta next year? ...

Only 4-7 knot wind, but sometimes a light cruise is great for the soul.

Taking a friend out for their first Hobie 16 sail is always fun and often a little wild. The strong winds didn't pan out as forecasted, but we still managed comfortable cruising speeds in the bay and open ocean. We did have a mishap following a bad tack in the Mission Bay Channel, drifting onto the large boulders of the jetty. With the surging water, I couldn't backwind the sails to break free....

A Hobie Cat can tear it up in just 8-10 knots of wind, so a fun time is a sure thing. But I'm not gonna lie, this session did hurt. Tip of the day - clean your camera lens after capsizing : )

Hobie sailing is fun and exhilarating, and hard work when the wind clocks 10 knots. Loads of air time, trapezing, and a boat flip to boot. Let's just say that today will be a rest day. I know I can't sail this cat forever, but for now I'm thankful that I can still play on the water like this.
