Make A Turkey Wing Handbroom
มุมมอง 27K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Let’s weave, y’all! In this short class, you will learn the basics for how I make turkey wing style hand brooms. More brooms to come so lets keep crafting! Need supplies? Snag a kit from us at www.sunhousecraft.com/new-products-3/new-hand-broom-kit It’s got all the supplies for making 4 hand brooms! Happy crafting!
You make it so easy to understand. Thank you.
THANK
Great video! How long is the broomcorn in this demonstration? I have your four-broom kit and if I do 12 bundles, even if I start right below the fluffy end of the broomcorn, I don’t have any room for a reed handle by the time I’m done. I’m stacking the first 5 bundles and then doing the Appalachian style for 3-4 and going back to stacking.
I’m excited to give this a try. Thank you for the tutorial. Growing my broom corn now.
Hello friends, I am Omar from Syria. I have a lot of experience in making brooms from straw, and I am ready to travel so that I can teach anyone who wants how to make this broom in an artisanal way.
You have very good technique with great instructions . You have made me want to learn to make a broom.☺️
Ah that’s great to hear! I hope you give it a go!
Te felicito desde argentina.yo soy escobero de segunda generacion.
Ah yay! Always glad to connect with fellow broom makers!
Great video and instructions! Followed along and make my first turkey wing handbroom and then restarted and made my second with the pyramiding thread! Honestly this was much more fun than I'd anticipated and has got me wanting to make more. Thank you!
Ha! I loved reading this …. Sorry in advance for your new hobby, but delighted to hear it! Thanks for sharing!
Working off one of you ‘kits’ and your videos. Great stuff! I just added braid to a broom with sorta okay success (ran out of cord). I’d like to seal/lock the braid… any suggestions on how long to dry and maybe what to seal it with?
Hi!- I think I understand: if you need something to seal the nylon you can burn the end with a lighter- let me know if I understand that right!
No, I heard that it was possible to coat the top of the broom plaiting with some type of clear sealer just to help the handle hold up longer. I probably misread something somewhere. I figured out the thread issue. @@sunhousecraft796
I got it- yes, The person I learned from Darold Francis would just polyurethane the whole braid with the handle!
Love this!! What size/gauge wire do you suggest?
I used a 22 gauge wire for this! Smaller seemed to break on me!
what a beautiful DIY for harvest season! especially love that you are finding more ways to encourage farm connection through this idea. happy fall!
Ah thank you! Definitely thinking of alll the ways to use broom corn! Happy Fall!!!
I love this! I’ve followed on you on Instagram for a while but I never realized you taught on TH-cam! Would you ever teach how to make the Appalachian style sweeper? It is sooo so beautiful and I love how you use traditional, hand-making techniques. And the little woven top like you teach here? Wow.
Hi! Ah somehow I just saw this! I plan to- it’s really finding the time to edit but I hope to by spring! Thank you for asking!
Thank you for the tutorial. After watching your teaching I gathered broom sedge from the field behind my home and made my own broom. I think it’s beautiful. It’s not as tidy of a material as broom corn but I’m still so excited about it and using what occurs naturally around me. Thanks so much!
Ah I love this!- so glad to hear!
hot diggity dog - you are such a great teacher!
So kind! Thank you!
Great video. Did you soak the broom corn?
I didn’t for this one- although if you use nylon, it does make a nice broom!
Best tutorial on the net I've seen. Saved so that I can use it as soon as I get broom corn. Thank you very much!
Ah thank you! Cobweb brooms coming this month :)
qual máquina vc usa no campo para cortar
If I understand, in the field a machete is used, in the shop for the broom, a tool called a broom cutter that looks like a fodder chopper or large paper cutter- hope that helps!
Great video! I started making small brooms this past winter and I have blunted several of my kitchen knives and shears. I cannot seem to find any place that sells broom knives. Can you point me towards a place that offers them?
Hi Charmaine! I hope my email helped!:). I do find I have to sharpen every day- Happy to put up a sharpening tutorial if that helps!
@@sunhousecraft796 Thank you so much for your help! I'm good on sharpening with whetstones :)
Beautiful work, thank you for sharing
Thanks for the kind feedback! More to come !
Very nice work... Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Nice ❤❤❤❤ Thanks for sharing
Fabulous video - thank you
Thanks for the positive feedback:)
I'm so glad you showed us your simple stick for your thread... I figured that out kinda on my own but didn't feel real confident about it. Thanks for the video... I'll keep an eye out for others and try a turkey wing soon!
Ah awesome!- yes, as long as you make sure to weave OVER TOP of the quick start, why knot (haha!) New videos once a month coming in March!
Thanks for the great instruction! Where do you purchase the broom corn?
Hi Shan! It’s pretty much either grow it or caddy supply company for your options. Hope that helps!
What a GREAT video. I was looking at a plastic broom thinking how UGLY it was. Started looking at Japanese brooms then thought: wait. Can I make that? just what I was looking for. BTW, American and Japanese brooms -- and everyone else's homemade brooms! -- look pretty much alike. Thank you so much!
Aw thanks Anita! Glad you liked it! I could easily go down the rabbit hole of all the technique variations, but it is indeed a great and very doable craft!
looks like voting starts tomorrow, I'll leave the tab open so I remember to vote ;) I hope y'all win!!
Thank you!!! Help us spread the word!
This is cool! Thank you for sharing!
Great video!!
Thank you! Glad you like it!
Lovely video- I'm excited to get started! Do you have both feet on the stick with the twine and just release them a little to release? Is the twine coming underhand towards you? I'm having a hard time finding any resources on how to figure that part out. Also how much twine will I want to wind on there for a 14" broom? Thanks!
Hi Kalani! Yes to both feet being on the stick- about 80 times around the stick if you are doing a tight turkey wing (as a guess!). The twine comes around the back of the stick and always up and over what you work with- let me know if you are able to get it- ill make another video if needed - there is a little story saved on my instagram called foot brake that may help if you are on there as well!
Can you tell me what type of string you're using please?
This is an 18# nylon- I find synthetic fibers are easiest to learn on
Great instructional video! You're pleasant to listen to and the broom is lovely.
Thank you Natalie!
Thanks for the instruction!
Sure thing!
Very nice demonstration!
John Feole thank you! More to come!
Thank you!
this is a rock solid instructional video! I need to get some broom corn seed for next growing season :D
dscrive thank you! Ive taught it quite a bit- more to come! Tips are always welcome!
