Via Ferrata | Klettersteig | Le Fayet | Climb2Recovery
Join myself and the C2R team on our final adventure in Chamonix. After an insane week of glacier work, crevasse rescue, rock climbing, ridgelines and mountain huts we thought that we would wrap things up with a chilled via ferrata...this turned out to be the hardest workout I'd done in ages and by the end my arms were hanging off!
This video is the fifth and final video in my "C2R Alps" playlist...for now!
Myself and the team of veterans from Climb2Recovery had the privilege of this amazing adventure with world-class international mountain guides in the most dramatic landscape that I've ever experienced.
If you would like to learn more about Climb2Recovery and what they are doing to support wounded, injured and sick veterans of the British Armed Forces, you can head over to www.c2r.org for more information or check out their social media platforms to keep up-to-date with their events.

Grisedale Tarn | Wild Camp | Lake District

Journey with me from Patterdale to Grisedale Tarn! I choose the higher route which passes over St Sunday Crag which offers better views but leaves me open to getting battered by the wind. My usual pitch at the tarn is waterlogged so I have to improvise with a new spot...and I manage to get set up just in time. This turned out to be a wild one... Cracking video mate. Liked and subbed!
🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
Great stuff 👍🙂
I don't know why, but I HATE ferns.
Enjoyed your video! What is the make/model of your tent?
Ha ha I’m new to the channel …so as requested …. I ‘subbed ‘……and I liked seeing you suffer so I ‘liked ‘ 😂
Wow Ian that amazing son boyo u like.well done pal
What a stunning reveal of your morning when you opened the tent door! Can't believe you only have 179 subs Ian, your videos are brilliant mate! Thanks for sharing, Marcus
Great video Ian, really enjoying your exploits! You’re a braver man than me with that scramble….my toes were curling just watching! 😂 really enjoyable watch. All the best, Marcus
Well that was proper wild camping mate, and a great watch. Just getting into a little bit of wild camping, plus did an Ultra Marathon in the Lakes a fortnight ago, so a really stark reminder how bleak it can get!! Dropped you a sub & like! All the best, Marcus
Thankfully no one took a fancy to your £700 tent while you were on Sharp Edge 🙏
What sleeping mat are you useing Ian?
Great advice about the ridge :)
ill be a be a youtube buddy Foxy, seeing that you dont have many YT mates yet :)
Great video Foxy, keep them coming!
Thank you mate! I'm taking some much needed time out of filming for a while to focus on some personal stuff, but I shall return stronger (although slightly older and even more weathered) than before!
Are you fuckin barmy? Pulling out stuff thats been there all that time? Just leave things be for people with a true understanding to study. A-hole.
Great informative video, I'm going to camp at Grisedale tarn at the end of this month, hoping for better weather then you had but not hopeful!
Another great video, you sound like an Armed forces veteran by the terminology you use, I am an army veteran so recognise the slang. I’m beginning my own wild camping adventures in the spring. I’ve subbed too, I always support small hiking/outdoor channels just like ours. 😊
Nice adventure there, it’s a stunning part of the National park, we’ve hiked a lot around there, we hiked over St Sunday crag when we did the deepdale horseshoe (Hart crag, Fairfield & St Sunday) we also visited Grizedale tarn when we hiked Helvellyn via Dollywaggon and nethermost pikes. 😊
😍😍
Appreciated.. Bad luck... If was there I once must shout Once For once in video. Cool Guy
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I'm very glad you enjoyed the video 🙏🏻 Stay safe.
Enjoyed that , thanks ...subscribed .
Glad you enjoyed it Peter! Thank you for taking the time to let me know too, it's greatly appreciated. Take care!
Great video, looks like a fantastic spot 👍🏻
Thank you Stuart, It's a great spot that I highly recommend 👍🏻 It's not as busy as some of the more popular tarns in the Lakes.
Very enjoyable. Very clear footage. Nice tidy setup in your tent.👍
Thank you very much for subscribing and taking the time to leave a comment Andrew. Really appreciate the positive feedback mate 🙌🏻
Some scary knife edges ! Pukka factor
It was great mate, moved at a really good pace and it was amazing rock to climb on. Loved it 🙌🏻
Hi Feral Earthling. Thank you for sharing. Congrats to you on surpassing "100"🎇🎇🎆🎆🎉🎉🍾🍾 Wowowowow...this is not rope climbing...real rock climbing!!! Hiking shoes and rock climbing shoes are completely different, Of course, different sports..🙈🙈 Well done. Sorry for the delay in commenting. I went out filming and I don't feel my legs at this moment. Now I am watching this video.😲😲🥶🥶
Hey Ms Kayak! Thank you very much 🙌🏻 It's great to hear from you again, I hope you've been having some great adventures! 😎 The Alps trip was amazing and has definitely opened up a new area for me to explore 😃 As always, thank you for watching and taking the time comment, you've made my day 🙏🏻
классное видео. спасибо
Thank you for subscribing and taking the time to leave a comment 🙏🏻 Enjoy! 😎
Champion video mate. Heading over that way tomorrow, depending on the wind I might drop down to the spot you camped. Cheers 👍
Thank you John, that's made my day! I hope you have a great camp and manage to find a good pitch. Cheers for taking the time to leave a comment mate. Enjoy! 🙌🏻
Excellent video. Is it exposed at the tarn? And plenty of flat ground to pitch?
Hi Hanzlah, Thank you very much for the kind words, I'm so pleased you enjoyed the video. There are a few places around the tarn that offer flat pitches to camp on. The tarn is fairly well protected from the elements although this does depend on the direction that the wind is coming from. Still one of my favourite places to wildcamp in the Lake District though.
I watched a few of your videos (and subscibed) before getting to this one. Two words - well done. It's much harder to produce good content than many people realise. Good luck on your journey. I'm sure your channel will do very well.
Thank you very much Antonio, It's always great to hear that someone is enjoying my videos and you are absolutely right, it's hard to produce good content and figure out what people would like to see as well as how they would like to see it. Greatly appreciate your kind words and I hope you continue to enjoy the content.
Just subbed, great channel,my kind of guy...although no way would I be climbing those rocks haha
Haha! Thank you very much for subbing 🙏🏻 Hope you enjoyed watching. You should check out my Elbow Ridge video for some real exposure on rocks too!
Aiguille du Midi not Aguille ;) But well done ! What a nice glacier
Thank you very much for pointing that out, greatly appreciated! Hope you enjoyed the video and yes, although the conditions at the moment are the worst they have been in a very long time, it was still a spectacular experience.
Hi and thanks Feral for sharing. Wow... serious planning... OMG...a spectacular view...2:09 Ohhhh...didn't realize you all are walking/climbing on the packed ice!!! I feel dizzy....6:50...May I ask how deep drop you all are? Well done!!! I take my hat off.🙋♀🙋♀🛶🛶
Hi Ms Kayak 🙂 Thank you as always for your kind words and for taking the time leave a comment, it always makes my day! It was definitely a breathtaking experience (partly because of the altitude but mostly for the amazing views). The crevasse we were working in was only around 10-15m deep but some were so deep we couldn't see the bottom. Needless to say the fantastic guides we had were keen for us to use the more accessible ones 🤣. Truly hope that you enjoyed the video and thanks again 🙏🏻
@@ian_fox Thank you for allowing me to experience this ice climbing through your lens.🏔
@@ms.kayak7seas it's my pleasure. Although sometimes the footage doesn't look as good as I'd hoped I am always trying to improve 😊
Looks class !
It was mate! You'll be on the next one...
@@ian_fox hopefully as a frozen heap at the bottom so I can be in a human predicament episode 😂
@@Prepnation100 that's the dream right there! 🤣
Hi and thanks, Feral Earthling for sharing. May I ask where you mounted your com while you were scrambling???...1:13 OMG, it's a really narrow path...4:39 May I ask what kind of fossil is it?...9:08...I like hunting fossilized shark teeth, stingray tail bones, sea turtle shells, and such Nice...10;35.. .Quite breezy...12:16, 13:08, Wow, this is as if it were a painting. 18:40 Well done.🙋♀🙋♀🛶🛶
Hi there! Thank you very much for the comment, I really hope you enjoyed the video. The camera is mounted at the front of my climbing helmet (I'll try to include that in my next video) and I think it worked well. I was trying to give the viewer the best perspective so that they could see things how I see them. I am currently out filming in the French Alps but when I get back I would like to research the kind of fossils that I found in the video (I didn't want to guess on camera and end up being wrong) 🤣 I would love to go searching for some other fossils like shark teeth and turtle shells, that sounds amazing!
@@ian_fox Look forward to it. Had your bell tickled.🤗
New sub and fellow solo wild camper from 🇧🇻👋 You're onto something good here,-really enjoyed your videos👍Keep them coming!😊
Wow, thank you very much, that genuinely means a lot 🙂 It's always nice to hear that people are enjoying my videos. I try to get better each time with editing and presentation, you've made my day with this comment 🙌🏻 Greatly appreciated! 😁
@@ian_fox Always nice to make someone's day💃😁 It's true tho-you can really see your vids getting better and better for each one,-so keep going!👌😊
Hi mate, looked a bit of a rough one did that. Good test for your gear though. Looks like everything held up well. 👌
It did thank you mate. I've since reproofed my tent and Goretex kit with Nikwax though, always good to keep on top of it. Hope you enjoyed the video, thank you very much for comment also 🙌🏻
Just subscribed to your channel mate, its been a while since I've found someone new to watch so looking forward to keeping up with your adventures. If you need some ideas of potential camp locations I've got a few videos on my channel. Cheers Stu
Thanks very much Stu, that's greatly appreciated. I'll check them out at the first opportunity. Hope you enjoy the videos and thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. Cheers!
what a lovely mornig you had
It was a great morning indeed! Great views like that are rare in the Lake District as the mountains make their own weather but I'm glad it turned out well. Hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for the comment 👍🏻
Good Video, great looking pitch
Thank you, really appreciate that. The pitch turned out to be ok in the end, I'd definitely use that one again.
Love the choice of rations 🫡
They were actually better than I remember 🤣 and way better than those dehydrated/freeze-dried meals, although both have their pros and cons.
Good luck with your new adventure, good luck with the editing but another great spot looks amazing 😁🙏🏼
Thanks very much Chanelle 😊 Editing takes a lot of time and a lot practice (and patience) but I'm making progress.
@@ian_fox you have the patience and will soon gain the knowledge, when you do I might have to pick your brains as that’s where I struggle in the editing of my videos 🤦🏼♀️
@@chanellehalford9833 always happy to help! And thank you 😊
What a grim camp! Good effort for sticking it out 💪🏼
😂 Thanks, it was indeed grim but not the worst I've done. I'm hoping the Lakes will be more welcoming in two days when I return. Thanks for the comment too, hope you enjoyed the video 🙏🏻

Dos bag, love it🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣 Probably not the correct terminology but one that I'm sure many will relate to anyway. Hope you enjoyed the video Si 👍🏻
@@ian_fox sure did pal.
How do, just stumbled across you channel and definitely like what your doing I ’ve just got into wild camping, been collecting/buying for a few months now and tested what I’ve got a few weeks back at the elan valley. I think I’m hooked. Been making lists of where I’d like to go, looking at somewhere in snowdon on Monday, any recommendations? Will almost definitely try this route out that you’ve just done. Keep up the good work bud👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Rob, Thank you very much for that, it's greatly appreciated! I'm still getting the hang of filming my wild camps but it's very encouraging to hear that people are enjoying the content. I've been into hiking and camping for years myself but never though I'd have the confidence to actually create a channel as I'm very self-critical and it looked like a lot of work (I wasn't wrong!). I love Snowdonia and can't wait to do some filming there in the future. I can definitely recommend Cwm Idwal or maybe Cwm Lloer, although these are popular areas, if you arrive late, leave early and leave no trace, I'm sure you'll have a great experience and won't be bothered by anyone. If however, you're feeling a bit more adventurous, try camping in/around one of the old disused slate mines. Let me know how you get on though Rob, I'm sure you'll have a blast. Enjoy and stay safe!
Mate, very much appreciated. I am gonna give it a go Monday/Tuesday and I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks for taking the time to reply. It is very much appreciated bud, thanks. Keep the vids coming, very enjoyable and practical watching. Take care, stay safe bud. Rob.
@@robp5220 happy to help Rob, I really hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip, definitely let me know how it goes. Thank you so much for the awesome feedback too, I'll be back in the Lakes straight after work again on Tuesday to explore another area. Take care! 💪🏻
That beautiful unmistakable sound of a tent Zipper being pulled and the sound of rain on the tent ,magical. Where else would you want to be. Call that wind ?? 😂😂 When you have been lifted up wearing a 25kg pack and thrown by the wind, well, then you know what a "wind" is. You don't get much sleep when you are in windy conditions, no matter how good the tent, as the wind increases so do the prayers. Nice easy video to watch. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀
Hello MT! Yes there is definitely something special about the sounds of camping, sadly I couldn't grab the camera fast enough to capture the serious gusts but my little Hilleberg Akto was definitely tested that night. I think the strongest wind I've experienced was in the valley of Glen Coe, Scotland during the West Highland Way challenge, it was certainly exhilarating to say the least. So glad you enjoyed the video, really means a lot 🙏🏻 Hope you're keeping well...
Hey Ian! Nice to have crossed your path and to meet you! Cheers, Roderick (doing the c2c) P.s. did you meet the british army medic on the way up or didn't you?
Hey Roderick! Hoe gaat het? It was great meeting you yesterday at Patterdale. I'm not sure how the video will turn out as the weather was pretty challenging throughout the night. Best of luck with your challenge my friend, massive respect! P.s I didn't see the Medic that you mentioned but she would've been insane to take the route that I was using whilst carrying that much weight 😂 Keep in touch buddy and stay safe!
Did you have any emergency gear in your pocket, when you did the climb, i.e. first aid dressings, a whistle, cell phone , foil blanket etc ? One slip and a grazed shin or broken kneecap later !!!! Enjoyed the video . Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😊😊
Hi there! Great question. Yes, I always carry a small personal first aid kit on my person (clips to my belt) if I ever leave my pack. Just a small off-the-shelf one from an outdoor shop but I've added a few items like a foil blanket and spare (mini) head torch and whistle etc as well as my cell phone which I always keep on my person. So glad you enjoyed the video, that genuinely means a lot. I'd love to get myself over to NZ for some climbing one day!
@@ian_fox Hello again, thanks for the reply. I think that you would enjoy our bush and mountains, but not to be taken lightly. The understory is very dense and a compass is a must (or GPS), go off the track and you are down to 200/300 metres an hour. many vines and creepers hinder the way, especially in the Tararua range. (see it on line) and of course you won't see a soul from one week to the next. I just finished a 3 day tramp and never saw a soul. After 50+ years in the mountains it has kept me fit and I go often, many solos and with others . 46 tramps (hikes) so far this year (67 last year) and not finished yet. If ever you come down this way make it a long stay, there is so much climbing and tramping to do. It will test you to your limit !! ATB. Cheers from NZ😊😊
@@mountainmantararua8824 wow! The Tararua Range looks spectacular! (I just googled it) It definitely looks like a challenge but also a place you can really lose yourself and get away from everything (and everyone 😂). I'm certainly a map and compass guy but a GPS is great as a back up navigation device. Lastly let me just say thank you for the messages and your kind words about my video, I can only hope that I am still as active and fit as you are after 50+ years in mountains. Keep up the great work sir! 💪🏻
Nice one ! Should get yourself a 360 cam for the scrambles, would compliment your video 👌🏻
