Good video. A lot of young men out there who are not a good fit for college, or the military, right away and could benefit from a start up in a municipal public works Department.

We are happy you enjoyed this. We are just trying to get the word out about public works! Also, National Public Works Week is May 21-27 this year. It'd be a good time to share also!

This video makes me want to work there. Any advice for someone looking to take on a management or entry-level role in public works?

Just be you. Be reliable and do a good job. Find a mentor, someone who is willing to teach you and answer your questions. Network! You can join a local chapter of APWA and start getting active. Good luck!

How’s the starting pay? What are your hours? Are weekends mandatory? Do they switch your duties everyday? Can you only apply at your hometown or can you work in a different town?

I will probably have an opportunity to change my career as a truck driver to join the Public Works force in my town later this year. Much smaller than Buffalo Grove. Wondering if its a good idea at 43.

@@apwachicagometrochapter5620 I'm a welder but I live in East TN and Im sure alot of people know East TN the cost of living is low but no alot of jobs especially I'm skilled trades most jobs have a 2 hour commute to Knoxville for a decent one welding has become really stagnant and I'm thinking about going to the public works department in my town cause I know a few people that work there I've just heard the money isn't good but the benefits are great don't know if that's true and do you get to do any welding at all in public works will the skill help me put at all any info would be great

@@dirttrackdevil1149 Every public works department is different throughout the country. Most focus on street repairs, sewer and watermain installation and maintenance, forestry, street lighting to name a few. Welding may be of use but may not be an everyday need. That being said, if you are good at your craft, chances are that you would be good in the public works field. Finding and fixing problems, finding ways to efficiently and economically accomplish tasks. Wages are not good... That's always everyone's question. That just depends on the economy. During a growing economy, the private sector may pay more but there is the chance of the position being eliminated during a down economy. So people are attracted to the higher paying jobs. PW is a bit more stable. During down a economy, sometimes people complain about how much PW staff earn. Most PW organizations have a modest cost of living adjustment. Plus you should have an opportunity to become vested and receive a pension, so maybe long term it is better than the private side. That will depend on people's living standards and current needs. You should reach out and talk to your local PW director or superintendent and see what they have to say. Your handle is dirt track devil, so maybe you are into dirt bikes. If so, you probably do maintenance on them. PW has plenty of motor vehicles requiring service and maintenance. This could potentially include police and fire equipment. If you are a problem solver, like people, working with your hands and possibly like figuring out ways to save, you should look into PW. Starting low in your desired position is not necessary a bad start. People retire, get promoted or move to other organizations. Positions can open up. Ask questions before committing. Continuing education is also sometimes supported which can increase peoples chances of being promoted. It will be up to you. You can get more info about PW from the national APWA website: www.apwa.net/ Good luck with whatever you decide.
