    I’m trying to do the part in procreate where you remove the background around the image. I feel like I’m missing a step. The background doesn’t remove and the eraser tool isn’t working either. I watched it over and over and written it down, step by stepson can replicate it. What am I missing?

    • @daniwilliamsillustration
      @daniwilliamsillustration 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      To cut out a painting so you have it on a translucent background? 1. I pick a bright colour that will contrast with the painting and put that on a new layer under the painting. This will just make it easier to see where you've erased. 2. I use the selection tool to make a very rough selection around the painting and copy and paste to a new layer. 3. Delete (or just turn off the visibility) on the original painting layer. It sounds like it might be this step that you missed. So remove that layer and you have the roughly cut out image with the bright colour layer below. 4. Then just go in with the eraser to remove the other background bits from your rough selection. 5. Delete the bright colour layer and hide the background layer which will be there by default, and save as a PNG so that you have the translucent background. If you save in another file format it will add in a white background. I hope that makes sense. :-)

      Good grief! I knew there was something I missed! I thought you were changing the color on the original background layer, the layer at the bottom of the layer stack. I didn’t see you make a new, separate background layer. So now it’s working! Yay! Thank you so much!! I’ve been really enjoying your videos! Thank you for getting back to me!

    One of the things I love about your digital art is that you have such a vast knowledge of what watercolor paints and paper can do and you’re able to beautifully translate that to Procreate’s medium and not only create your own work but share your techniques that capture watercolor. You also have a very good eye for color. I hope you continue in both mediums but most important is to do what is best for you. Thank you for sharing!

    So why the Leuchtturm over the Seawhite...(paper wise)?

    • @daniwilliamsillustration
      @daniwilliamsillustration 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Over the original Seawhite books with the 140gsm? Actually the paper is really similar. The Seawhites are more affordable but I like having a thicker, hard-back book with more pages. Seawhite probably make those too, but the Leuchtturms felt like a gorgeous present to myself. Having something so nice made me want to use it and fill it. It was quite a shallow choice really!

    There is defo a difference in paper quality between the talens white and ivory books, but they are both amazing value for money. I also love the Leuchturm sketchbooks, was so happy when they brought out the sage version as that is my fave colour. I don’t know if you’ve heard of Pink Pig sketchbooks, but they are a small uk company, have a really wide range of sizes, available on Amazon, and are also really inexpensive. Your artwork is absolutely gorgeous btw!

    This was fantastic to hear your journey. I really enjoyed hearing your thought process. What’s funny and interesting to me as an artist how different we all are? I have tried pretty much every single sketchbook you’ve used. (Minus the Filofax and that first one). My royal talens sketchbooks are my favorite - I keep going back to them. I use watercolor in them quite a bit. I also am probably a weird, weird person, but I LOVE the base color of the cream paper. HOWEVER. I never thought of using a Leuchtterm blank book as a sketchbook and now I’m getting one! I use them for my daily journals and don’t know why I didn’t think of that before. I found my perfect sketchbook in the Archer & Olive sketchbook (especially because I used fountain pen), but they rarely stock them, so I’ve been waiting for them to restock an A5 and having to get by trying other things.

    Love this video, it’s very helpful! How do you use CMYK with Lisa Glanz’s watercolor paper? Mine is set to RGB and I can’t change it. Do you instead move your art to photoshop THEN convert it to CMYK? If you do, do you find you lose a lot of the vibrancy? How do you get around that?

    • @daniwilliamsillustration
      @daniwilliamsillustration หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, I don't use Lisa Glanz's papers, except occasionally for doodles so I hadn't noticed that problem. But I believe you can't change colour profiles once you've started working on a document, it can only be done in the initial set up, so I guess that's why. I have used photoshop to change colour profiles on files in the past and haven't noticed a significant difference. But these days I do everything in Procreate and just make sure I'm using the right settings from the start. Sorry, that's probably not very helpful to you.

    OMG! I can't get over how crappy those Filofax books are! If you love the Lighthouse (I am not going to attempt to write it in German without it in front of me) notebooks you will LOVE Japanese stationery!!!! Hobonichi Techo planners, Midori.......they use the thin Tomoe S River paper. SOOOOO thin you can see through it, yet you can use fountain pens and ink on them without any bleed through. NONE. AT ALL!!! The ones you like I believe use the same kind of paper, not the same brand per se, but that style of super thin paper that can actually handle wet media. I have a Hobonichi 5 year planner (basically blank, left side has five equal rectangles with the year in the corner and the right side is a grid) that I PAINT with inks and gouache and Eastern style watercolors in. Not as a sketchbook, but as a sort of daily journal/draw the day type of thing. And they make them with removable paper. So you could totally get something that you could put all your different papers in. That would also last forever.

    • @daniwilliamsillustration
      @daniwilliamsillustration หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I love the idea of the Filofax notebook but the actual product was so shoddy. Their plain paper is quite nice to draw on though. I looked at the Hobonichi--I spend way too much time looking at stationery--they are tempting.

      I'm afraid I haven't tried any free ones. But if you have access to some paints etc, you could easily make your own textures to add to your Procreate art. You can make stamp brushes too. If you're going for a watercolour look, I think the brushes that come with the app aren't great. The Lisa Glanz ones are my favourite. All her brush sets are good and she has some videos on You Tube showing how she uses them.

    Hi I loved this video and it was so satisfying watching you expertly paint in Procreate with those watercolor brushes and tools. Your technique and skill is a joy to behold. I have just purchased the new M4 iPad Pro 13" and I am eager to start back in illustrating and painting after a decade of not doing any art. I have very little watercolor experience but what you demonstrated looks like so much fun in Procreate I have to play with it! I clicked on your links to purchase the brushes but unfortunately the first link is for an Etsy product that is sold out. I don't even know who the seller was or the name of the product. The second Etsy link was for the Julia Dreams brush set and worked perfectly. The third link took me to Lisa Glanz's website but did not take me to the specific brush set you were recommending. I hope you were using the AquaReal 2 The Tactile Texture Edition, as that was the one I purchased.

      Oh thank you so much. I'm so glad it was useful to you. The Lisa Glanz set that I used was the AquaReal 1, but the second set looks great too. I also have some of her pencil sets and they're great. The other brush set was by @calvinatdrifterstudio8438 who has lots of great videos on his channel about using his brushes. But to be honest, I think Lisa Glanz's sets are my favourite and you certainly don't need that many brushes. Too many can be overwhelming, especially when you start. Good luck!

      Never give up! Everyone's art is different. For me, the badgers just didn't look anything like what I was trying to achieve. I think I'd probably looked at someone else who was producing beautiful gouache pieces and I was trying to create something similar and falling way short. I was trying to force something instead of working more intuitively and leaning into my strengths. Comparison is the thief of joy, right? Don't compare your work to other's. Look for what's good and beautiful and distinctive and quirky in your work.
