Nope. Basicaly they finally debuged their 6cyl diesel to perfection! This time they made it perfect. So much service we had so far with cars with B57 nothing and I mean NOTHING needed to be chainged yet! Once client insisted to change the chains on 300k km mileage, but we did it just because he asked, and the chain was pefectly okay. Bottom problems also fixed, bearings good, pump is good, shaft is great, fuel system perfect, now even single turbo variants all uses piezo injectors.. So only thing you have to do is to get a car with as low mileage as possible and save it from that 30k km oil change period nonsense from BMW, and treat it every 9k with quality oil, and it will serve you forever! But if you got one with mountains of oil mud inside noone will help you... So I am so glad they finally made this exelent engine lineup! Both B58 and B57 simply requeres NO ADDITIONAL attention at all, just regular maitanance, if you happen to have B serries IC engine, you are lucky, just delete that BMW oil change periods 25-30k from your head, do it every 10k and you good to go! There is nothing to even compare here with N57s, totaly differend engine, this video is a bit missleading... You can even leave all eco shit on it, EGR, AdBlue etc.. all systems works now perfectly ideal now! Maintain and just Enjoy your B series!

I have a bmw 530e 2017. Currently on 151,000 miles in the uk. Coolant pipes changed due to leaks, engine block coolant connector changed, radiator changed due to leak. All the above i changed myself quite easy all work is availve to follow on TH-cam and forums. Currently have an issue with the exhaust vanos. Changed myself the vanos actuator, still the problem so it could be the vanos solenoid exhaust side or jammed at the crank my get a professional to change this as it needs special tools etc to lock the camshaft etc. This is the biggest problem I have had but honestly great car runs smoothly even with this vanos issue I honestly belive it will do another 100,000 miles once this issue is fixed 💯

I'm thinking of purchasing a 2013 f10 with the 528 which carries the n52 this engine has a problem where it starts then stop. I must say your review was very informative. The engine in question was transfer from another bmw which is a 7 series after the transfer the start and for a minutes then shut down then start and then shut down again and now will not turn over is this engine jam is there anything that could cause the engine seize so quickly we use AMS oil full synthetic

M57n e61 here 330k driven hard daily ...and no chain stretch. Such a pity reliability went down from here. Think ill buy an n57 35d anyway. I had an e60 n47 see over 200k miles and had chain inspected before i sold and was alll good. I find bmw quite reliable in general. IBS system has been a nuisance on a few cars though.

Though I do not have b48, decided to go for ea888 from VAG family. Very nice video. Couple of things I have learned about vag 2.0 tsi engine though. One thing, it is ok, if engine oil temperature is 105-110 degrees celsius when load is low. BMW and VAG are using electronically controlled thermostat, so they can close it, when engine load is low, higher oil temp, less friction. And plastics will probably last the same under 105 degrees and 95 degrees. Another thing, atleast in VAG most plastic pump and thermostat can be replaced with aftermarket steel? ones, so I imagine you can do the same with b48 and forget about that problem all together. Third thing, most leaks are actually caused by not using proper torque numbers when changing for example water pump. If you screw it with too much torque, o-ring will be damaged and leak will occur. But overall I am very happy that we finally have good, high performance, reliable turbo engines :).

I rarely see any documented cases of timing chain failure on the B47 although 60% parts are shared and I'm a member of quite a few owners groups. Lots of forum members high mile examples and still on the original chain. The B47 engine has been out for over 8 years now so you'd expect to see many more documented cases online and in forums. I think the materials used have improved and potentially the chain has been revised to use a higher grade material.

I love my 2006 530xi, best car ever. Drives best at 70+ @2700 its built to go fast. 120mph is a mear 4000 ? this thing will fly on the top. All while being buttery smooth. with sporty firm suspension. Its a true drivers car.

N57 engine is known for main and rod bearings issues. The problem comes from oil pump which operates under 1.2 bar which is a dead zone for the engine. Upgrade the oil pump and the front cooling system and good to go.

I really want to know did BMW change the design of the crankshaft bearings on the B57?Are they any better than the N57 one's?I think it's disgraceful for such a great brand like BMW and a brand renowned for making the best driving cars,to have such factory made flaws like faulty crankshaft bearings.

N20 after 2015 seems to be better than B48

Need help. 530xd 20k km 2022 lci. Motor feels and sound great, vibration of motor is normal, hood also feels nearly no vibration. However inside you feel vibration a lot (as if it resonates, seat and steering vibrations are felt, nearly to massage level) - same in all gears, N, D, R, P… all same - it is excessive only at idle…. As soon as you get to 900-1000rpm it is quite and smooth - hot or cold start also makes no difference. - oil is fresh (every 10k km I change) Motor was dropped down and installed back because car needed left front part changed due to accident. What can cause such vibration ?

I have a 2010 635d e63 it has the n57 3.0 twin turbo tuned to 320 bhp amazing car to drive only 70000 miles on it

My US version 2006 530xi n52 with metal valve cover, is still running fantastic after 255k miles or 408,000 Kms. I change my own oil at 5-7k miles, mann filter and Castrol 5w-30 bmw LL-01 approved oil only. This car has been in top gear most of it`s life 2700 rpm. or cruising at 80. The e60`s get a bad rap here, but I got a really good one, I think. First year for n52 and xdrive.

Great information here. I have a Mini 2017 John Cooper with the 10.2 compression, running HCP (Halim Cazimi) custom Stage2 map. I have the Forge FMIC (Air-to-Air) and HJS sport-CAT DP. Is the B48A20B engine in my JCW a "48 tu" version like in the G-sereies 320i? I dont have a Water based intercooling system (as far as I am able to see). Can you comment on the reliability (tuned) of my engine type compared to your video review in the 330i ?

Mine 330e has a small issue coolant getting low sometimes but no leaks at all. I replaced the cooling cup is better now. It looks like cooling has high pressure

Great video! I havent seen such detailed comparison of n47 and b47 diesels with parts catalogues! I'm looking at a used 2016 328d with n47t engine with 160,000km....🙄🤔
