    Yes, it's important to professionalize the directors in South Africa. This will accelerate the development of more equipped board members (with appropriate skills, knowledge, and attributes), effective Boards, better performing and value-creating organizations, and a better South Africa for all. It will also inspire more youth to join the profession.

    Fully support the call for regulating directorship. Regulating directorship through the IoDSA is tantamount to ensuring the integrity of leadership of the Board, much like entrusting your prized possession to an approved and reputable car repair shop. The revelations from the Zondo Commission, where the consequences of inadequate director oversight are starkly evident, proves the point that the persistent call by IoDSA for regulation for professional directorship is essential and a response on such call is long overdue. As citizens we have already seen that without proper oversight and accountability mechanisms for directors, fraud and unethical practices go unaccounted for. This undermines public trust in both corporate entities and government's ability to foster a transparent and ethical environment and to uphold its own laws and regulatory standards. The lack to approve the regulating of professional directorship not only compromises accountability but also reflects on government responsibility.

    Professionalising company directors is equally as critical in the non-profit and social impact organisation sectors. Although the Companies Act applies to For-Profit and Non-Profit Companies, there is a strong sense that the fiduciary responsibility, accountability, and ethical behaviour standards should be viewed as critical and applicable across Non-Profit Trusts as well as Voluntary Associations. One would need to evaluate how these could be applied more particularly in the context of community based public benefit organisations.

    Professionalising directorship is crucially important to ensure the establishment and maintenance of effective governance, performance expectations & standards and individual accountability. Setting and enforcing appropriate standards for governance professionals will result in improved transparency in appointment processes and increased levels of credibility (trust) with all stakeholders (the general public, communities, employees, customers, suppliers, financiers, shareholders and regulatory bodies incl. government)

    Professionalizing Director qualifications is an important advancement in driving and enhancing the critical role that one is required to perform - in order to effectively discharge their duties as a professional on Boards. It not only embodies professional mastery - where knowledge, skill and attributes are an imperative but sound understanding of accountability, integrity and ethical standing. The promotion of the Director Professional not only means ensuring that individuals are competent but become central to business success and sound decision making - henceforth promoting the caliber and integrity of the Director role. Ongoing Director training is certainly encouraged as is with other professions. In light of the onerous role that one assumes as a Director, it is imperative that one ensures that they are competent to discharge their fiduciary duty!

    Absolutely support the IOD direction in certified directors for not only improving good corporate governance and oversight, but also ensuring accountability and professional standards. Continued professional development is critical. Adhering to professional code of conduct by a professional body is crucial to prevent delinquency. Licence to operate is key.

  • @markvella1241
    @markvella1241 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    As a Director and member of IODSA, who has witnessed and experienced misconduct and delinquent behaviour by board directors and officers, and the incredible difficulty in addressing this, this presentation and position is welcome. There would be factors to consider such as SME governance and how such qualification could be inclusive and accessible, and not be an obstacle to company formation and growth. That said, directorial failings have often been at the heart of the corruption and other issues negatively affecting South Africa. The knock-on effect of poor governing behaviour is significant. Addressing directors conduct has been a scotoma (blind spot), unaddressed for too long. Without oversight and being held to a standard, it is unlikely that the current problem will change.

  • @prieurduplessis

    Professionalising company directors is crucial for improving governance and accountability. Like legal and medical professionals, directors impact the economy and society, requiring stringent competence and ethical standards. Introducing compulsory IoDSA certification could standardise director qualifications and address corruption and incompetence highlighted by the Zondo Commission. Enforced certification and ongoing education ensure directors remain informed about best practices. However, mandatory professional body membership might introduce bureaucracy and restrict the director pool, especially in smaller firms or startups needing flexible governance. There's also a risk of regulatory frameworks being used for gatekeeping rather than quality assurance. Despite these concerns, the benefits of professionalisation, if managed to avoid excessive bureaucracy and maintain inclusivity, would significantly enhance corporate governance, benefiting the broader economy and society.

    Professionalising directors in the public sector is long overdue. There are governance challenges encountered in organisations due to the ever evolving megatrends such social instability, technology advancements, climate change, fractured world and demographic shifts. Leaders including directors need to lead, inspire, motivate and encourage innovation to transcend tried and tested approaches. There is a need for competent, courageous, collaborative and compassionate directors. IoDSA provide invaluable opportunities for director development. Aspiring and existing directors need to keep up to date with the latest corporate governance developments to remain relevant.

    Why would people take the power and right to vote seriously when they can just play victim? That is what they love to do. They would either not vote at all and then complain later, or vote ANC and still complain why things aren't going right. Either way they have brought whining to an art form.
