Starpoint Trailbuilding from S Coast Ridge down towards our southern builds. 1-19-2025 to 1-20-2025
This trip was awesome but.. I didn't hardly get any sleep at all. Cowboy camped. Bad decision. When sun went down all seemed fine but then condensation came in, then the harsh wind and below zero temperatures. Woke up with ice on my footbox and my entire quilt was wet and icy crystals all over it in the torso region. Hands were freezing and same with my feet. But that said it was an awesome trip because we finished .22 miles of our .44 previously remaining. We are now .22 miles from finishing the original distance we wanted to, from Estrella Camp to S. Coast Ridge Road! YAHOO!!!!!
Maybe two more trips remain before we are fully connected and do a thru-hike.
Also we are going to build a spur that goes directly into Three Peaks Camp, and I think I figured out the best route for that on this trip.
In this video you will see the ever impressive southern face of Lion Peak from a distance so close you could reach out with your hands and touch it practically. Never before seen view in any other location in Big Sur. And also from this trail you can see Three Peaks (and Fourth one) like no other location. Very impressive views. Super wide panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and some of the best sunrises and sunsets in Big Sur!

The trail camera is set up to fire off 3 photos when triggered. I just "animated" them with 1/4 second durations. In this batch of photos, the fox is the winner of the most visits by far. Actually it could be two foxes, as one of these bursts shows both of them together. And the fox always comes in the dark, the black and white shots are how the Infrared Camera works. Fox, Bears, Cougar, Deer. ...

Starpoint Trail is a new trail in Big Sur in the Silver Peak Wilderness. We are now .44 miles from finishing our goal of extending it to the South Coast Ridge Road where we have already built a trail down from that point for a fair distance. Stay tuned for more updates and official opening of the trail. This trail will be mostly of interest to advanced bushwhacker off-trail hiker types as it is...

    Very Nice collection. I currently own 6 Zeiss cameras. 3 from the 50's and 3 from the 60's. The 50's cameras seem better built. I have the Contina II folding camera along with the Contina IIa and 1a. Fortunately for me all work perfectly. I plan on getting a Contessa soon. I really love how the 50's Zeiss cameras operate. Like a fine tuned Swiss Watch.

    Thank you so much for sharing. I have a question. Between 2006-2008 while hiking to Mckinley peak in the Los Podres/San Rafael wilderness in Santa Barbara County, my friend and I encountered a black cat/Puma. Have you seen something like that hiking in California? Or heard of someone seeing one?

    • @jungleperry
      @jungleperry ปีที่แล้ว

      Seen? No, but I have heard of them further south, particularly in the Santa Monica Mountains in Malibu. many people claimed to sight the black cats but they weren't cited as puma in size but more panther in size. little larger. I myself have only seen cougar, bobcat, what looked like a Canadian lynx but might have just been a wicked large bobcat. In the southern Los Padres, I'll tell you who would know about black cats and that would be Bryan Conant of the Los Padres Forest Association. they are the organization that maintains trails in the southern part. The northern part which I live amongst in Big Sur and SLO is managed by other groups. In Big Sur it's Ventana Wild Association or VWA.

      thanks for watching! Yes it's in a mid-way part now. Half is completed and the other half awaits our attention. Since you appreciated it, here's a short history. This is an ancient track cleared by a bulldozer before World War II when Fort Hunter Liggett was all the way to the ocean. This portion after World War II was transferred to the Forestry and added to Los Padres National Forest in Santa Lucia District (southern Big Sur). Forestry had no idea of it's existence. 15 years ago I began my journey to open this up. The bottom side (the end of the track) was so much more open, I could see portions open on Google satellite view. I tried multiple ways to bushwhack to it but you can see this bush is so dense it's impassable without cutting a trail. So this is year two opening up this ancient track. We built a trail all the way up the mountain to the bottom side of the dozer cut and then re-opened up the dozer cut to allow free range hiking all the way up and down for another mile plus another spur which leads back down another ridge towards we think some water source. The views on Starpoint (that's the name we give this trail) are probably the best scenic views in all of Big Sur. When we get this completely passable then we will seek to get the trail added to BigSurTrailMaps website, so others can come enjoy these views and extreme remote location.

    • @andyhikes1768

    I was wrong about those Spruce trees. Those are NOT Spruce, they are very rare trees, the Santa Lucia Fir. The rarest trees in North America! Go look it up! We will be down there one day soon and I plan on retrieving some cones and some sap from one since that's what they are well known for the sap that is the "best incense" to the Vatican.

    • @jungleperry

      Harvest Right is the maker of the machine. Dehydrated avocado is a far cry different than freeze dried. I imagine the dehydrated avocado would be black and rock hard and would also never reconstitute.
