My new Russell McCumber 5-string fiddle (or 5-string violin?) is an absolute beast! Warm and rich on the low end, and bright and comfy on the high end. Not shrill in any register, and it’s balanced across its full range. I have played Ike 9 McCumber fiddles and they are all knockouts. ... AND, it's moveable!! 😁 So cool to be cool. Thanks, Nate!!
I use them. Last year I had a practice day playing for hours and I ended up with a nasty cut on my right forearm. Since then I use both Dr. Arm & Voight armrests. I kind of like Ebony as it matches all my fretboards and bridges minus my Washburn. That one is Rosewood vs Ebony.
Ouch! I never made it as far as having a cut, but I’ve gotten pretty sore from a sharp mandolin edge before. I used to have a red diamond that was like a knife lol. Banjolit has a new Doctor Arm model that I’ll be testing soon! I’ll post a video about it once I try it.
My guy in the cowboy hat is a Peaky Blinders type character and man, this is one of the best brain tricks for practicing that I’ve seen in awhile. Great job Nate!!
You nailed it! I'm such a perfectionist I have been reluctant to record myself. Thanks for the encouragement!
I’m so happy the guy in the cowboy hat resonated with you! I wish I had learned it many years ago, but it took me over 20 years to figure it out.
Hi Nate, I'm enjoying your common sense videos. I've struggled for years with right hand speed. I have tried every method for developing speed (relaxed grip, speed bursts, change in hand position, slow to fast practice etc). But my hand always reverts to going slow again a day or so later. Obviously, there is excess tension in my right hand, but knowing that and being able to eliminate it are different things. One method I've adopted is to to play scales and open string exercises with deliberate tension in my right hand and then release it. My idea is that I need to actually teach my muscles how to relax. I'm not sure this will be the solution but I juts wondered if you have ever seen results from your students with this method. Thanks!

Hey! I’m a Mando player of 4 months and lately I’ve noticed popping where my left wrist meets my hand it dosent hurt but I’m worried do you know anything about this
Hi Hunter! I haven't experienced any wrist popping myself (although there's elbow popping every time I get up off the floor 😂 ). If it were me, I'd get a physical therapist to check it out just in case. It's also a good idea to meet with an experienced and qualified teacher to check out your technique and make sure there's nothing wrong. It's crucial to get your technique in order as early in your fiddling journey as possible. If you'd like to meet up for an online lesson sometime, I can help you out with assessing and troubleshooting any technique problems that may be present. You can sign up for a free 15-minute meet & greet to discuss an action plan here: fons.app/@playnately/book/appointments - Nate
That opened a door you’re a champion
This comment made my day, Gary! The all-purpose A blues lick was a huge door opener for me as well! Let me know how it goes after you've spent some time with it. I'd love to hear about it! I don't always remember to check the TH-cam comments, but my email is hello@playnately.com and you are welcome to reach out there any time! - Nate
😮 what I have always admired about the fiddle is it's ability to invoke any mood. Absolutely versatile.
Agreed! It’s so similar to the human voice, and can be similar to wind instruments as well.
Nice! Leading something…but it’s definitely young Thile! I’m currently OBSESSED with Leaves Fall
Good guess on the Thile! It's "Slime Rock" from his first solo album, "Leading Off".

I just use the straight even non fancy pronunciation. I play the monel medium plus set and seem to last a year easy but my ears my not be that sensitive.
I’m still not comfortable pronouncing it lol. If they’re lasting you a year and you like the sound then it’s not wrong to say they last a year IMO.
Thank you for such a thorough and concise but quick answer. I found out everything I wanted to know and that under one minute!
You’re welcome! Glad you found it helpful - I’ll make more videos like this!
Is it get up John?
It’s not, but good guess!

My grandfather had 16 Mandolins. My grandfather passed away in January.
Wow, what a collection! And something nice to remember him by. I’m sorry for your loss.
😂 And to think I almost didn't watch this one. But I really want to get more serious learning mandolin. I could grab my fiddle (because I can't get it in my head now) but I'll just ask, is this basically the pentatonic lick? Thanks for the end of video reward!
You’re welcome, Sheryl! The lick in the video is based on an arpeggio rather than a pentatonic scale, but it can be applied similarly.
Iron horse Metallica duh

Slimerock - Chris Thile
Nailed it! But of course, you knew that 😃
@@PlayNately I raided this tune many years ago for some fun licks to use in jamming.
I did the same! So many cut and paste licks for Em and E blues.
Ik it’s Chris idk the name thoooo
Yep! Its deep catalogue - comes from his first album.
@@PlayNately awesome! I rlly like your channel by the way I’ve been playing mandolin for three months we’re and I’m not sure but people are telling me I am advancing quickly and man do I love it!!! I’m sixteen and when I graduate high school I’m going to ETSU for the bluegrass program! Thanks for the inspiration and advice!
ratio
Good guess, but it’s something else.
Sounds like Chris Thile’s playing but idk the song
You’re right - It’s Thile! This song was from his first album “Leading Off”
@@PlayNatelyYOOOOO IM ACTUALLY SO PUMPED I CANT BELIEVE I GOT THAT 😭
I haven't the slightest clue, but it sounds amazing
It’s a gold mine for cut and paste licks in Em.
Great lesson!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching 🙏

'Dawg's Waltz' - The opening line is this, but in the key of D.
Yes!! Love that song.
fantastic
It’s a “Hoss”
I noticed that you use an armrest. Can you suggest when one might consider adding an armrest. Thanks
I recommend armrests for pretty much all players. It gives your arm more mobility so you can get your hand toward and away from the bridge/go from string to string smoothly. This is the one I use: th-cam.com/video/vxTHgzaAQ24/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6prKTEbVp9NH8AG1 And another video about it here: th-cam.com/video/GsdMqzZsB14/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LXWA1-kNso0e7ID5
Haha, I did watch to the end because sometimes you play a cool lick or tune to close out.
And I think I failed you on that this time 😂
Yep. 😂
Always struggled getting closer to the fretboard and I suspected something might be off with my right hand and this just might be it. Been playing for about 8 years and never seen anyone cover this. Great video.
I’m so happy to hear that, David! Comments like this make it all worth it. Keep me posted on your progress, and feel free to reach out with questions!
For some reason the bell is turned off and I can’t turn it on to get notifications when a new video is out.
Oh no! I haven’t encountered this problem before, but I’m thinking maybe it was a glitch in the TH-cam app?
@@PlayNately I don’t know 🤔
I start out on my G string with my drumstick on the edge of the bridge and by the time I go from G-E and back the edge of the bridge is on the little finger side of the drumstick, but only the G and D strings are touching my palm and am still on the edge of the bridge at the G string. Any suggestions? Thanks
Hi Scott! Just saw this. I think I will need to see it to know exactly what is going on. Is the problem still happening? If so, email me a video of your right hand doing this, I’d be happy to point you in the right direction! My email is hello@playnately.com
Been playing for 2 years. Thanks for the confirmation that I’m headed in the right direction. Great job with complete explanations
I’m so happy to hear that, Brook! (Or is it Brooks?). Glad to hear that you were already headed in the right direction and I’m thrilled that my video helped you confirm that. Good job seeking out good info early in your mandolin career, because it is so much harder to change these things later.
Wow! I’ve been struggling with playing closer to the sweet spot forever. I’ve also been watching TH-cam videos about mandolin for years. No one has ever explained this the way you just did. Thank you!!!
I’m so happy to hear that! You can get to the sweet spot and use the full spectrum of tones with some focused practice and the information in this video. To your point about not finding this anywhere on TH-cam, I have found that the most helpful tips and tricks Are not easy to find. So I work them into this channel and into my classes and private lessons as much as possible.
As a new player I really appreciate your explanations on the different strings. Thank you
I’m happy to hear it has been helpful, David! I need to get back to this series. I lost my motivation after finding the Mapes Octacore strings and liking them so much, haha. But I would really like to complete the series. What strings are you using?
Excellent! Your use of the big pick is great! Often, other people demonstrate pick position with a real pick but due to poor lighting, camera position and their hand angle, it's difficult to see what they are trying to demonstrate. And I like the way you summarize your points at the end. Thank you.
Thank you 🙏 The comically large mandolin pick is one of my favorite things. To your point, nobody can see a pick in video, and even in person, it’s tough to see. So happy you enjoyed the lesson!
We're having a cool front in San Antonio. High is only 94.
Oof! 74 here today.
Thank you so much!! Had a eureka moment listening to you. Pick better not louder. I've been working on the optimum delivery of the pick to the string for about a year now and today your video was a key piece in the picking jigsaw puzzle that now enables me to produce great resonance combined with great tone when previously it was a choice between volume or tone.
Wonderful! I’m so happy you had a eureka moment watching this video! It’s one of the most important lessons I have to share with students. Little things like that aren’t easy to find, so I try to make it accessible. Let me know how it goes after you’ve tried it!
Chris Haigh has a similar lick in a lick trial and attributes it to Benny Martin. His video has 4ths for double stops, I think.
Thanks for the data points. I’ll have to check out his stuff!
I have no trouble picking out melodies on the mandolin but have been struggling with strumming smoothly. Very frustrating ! This instruction video has finally unlocked my strumming ability in a clear and simple manner. thank you
So happy to hear it helped you break through! The most important things about getting a good strumming sound are pick depth, and velocity of the hand. When those are right, then every strum pattern is easy.
Google AI is majorly inferior at this kind of task to the Facebook AI. Which sucks cuz i hate Facebook. Chat GPT seems roughly equivalent to Facebook.
For me it was all fun for a couple of weeks and now I want to puke every time I see a company mention that they have AI 😂
@@PlayNately I mean, we were warned. But I agree. The speed at which it is infiltrating everything is alarming. Still, if you have the opportunity you should always take your future overlord's equipment out for a test drive.
I've watched many of your strings-comparison- videos. IMO these strings were made for that mandolin! Just Beautiful! Bright, Bouncy, Melodic, Clear, Evenly balanced across all strings. These strings sound the best of all of them.
Thanks for watching, Frank! I need to get back to that series. I stopped because I found these strings and I’m still using them. I totally agree with you that they are a fantastic match for the Wonderbat (Pava #194). What strings are you using?
how's the upper register projection on the Kogut violin? I know most of his fiddles have a huge bottom end.
It projects pretty well, but it’s not an extremely loud fiddle. Overall it’s a balanced fiddle across all 5 strings.
Could you please comment on where your hand should be resting on the mandolin when you’re doing a tremolo? Thank you
But I want to first say this was excellent and so helpful, thank you! (I just bought a mandolin today.)
Hi Priscilla! Just saw this. Sorry for the late reply! I’m so excited that you’ve found the mandolin! Looks like it’s been about 2 months since you started. How are you liking it?
There are several places the hand can rest, depending on the situation. If you are playing near the bridge then the "drumstick" of your palm can make contact with the saddle (the top part of the bridge), on the G-string side. If you are playing closer to the fingerboard then the drumstick either touches the G-string, or the hand can float without making contact. I'm not sure how much sense that makes in written form, so feel free to reply with follow-up questions! Also, I released a course about mastering tremolo last year, and it has helped a lot of people get very good at tremolo. You may find it helpful. Here's the link: bit.ly/MasterTremoloCourse Or, if you'd like more personalized advice, we could meet for a private lesson online and get your technique going. You can start with a free 15-minute meet-&-greet to chat about it first if you'd like. Here's the link: fons.app/@playnately/book
