Deeply disappointing, yet again. The Church of England has been cautiously confident in the face of Covid. Too many leaders in the Methodist Church have been cowering in the face of the virus. There is no evidence of spread in mainstream careful churches, which is why it’s permitted. Thank God my local parish church was open before the lockdown, and will, I hope, open again.

I disagree Stuart. No leaders are cowering away, they are boldly acting to keep the vulnerable safe, and quite rightly allowing local churches to find appropriate ways to keep our people connected.

It is absolutely not about cowering in the face of the virus. It is all about keeping our valued and loved people safe. We absolutely must do all we can to rid ourselves of this horrible virus as soon as we possibly can and the Church can play its part in that by being sensible and practical, if keeping the doors closed for a little longer is the best way forward then so be it!!

@@andrewprior7029 but people’s well being is wider than that. Worship is far safer than going to the supermarket. That is why it is explicitly permitted by the Government. That is why other denominations and other areas of Methodism are happily doing it. That is why the Connexional Team is not advising against it. That is why many Districts are not advising either way. The District has no role to play on this issue. We are not a diocesan church. Such a practice infantilises church trustees who are perfectly capable of making rational decisions. Such a practice infantilises individual Methodists, leading to a situation which stops them from deciding for themselves if they want to worship God in communal non-virtual worship. However good Zoom or TH-cam worship is, it’s not the same. We have for decades affirmed Christians who take personal risks to worship God together, thanking God for our freedom to worship, then when we are faced with a minute risk, we refuse to accept it.

The church has got to do different things this year - that is clear. Some churches will do it well, some not so well, but God will bless the attempts if done with a sincere heart. As to whether indiviual churches should open, I am a bit more 'on the fence' than you - I can think of many in my own congregation who want to meet, including some who are more vulnerable (including myself), but still miss gathering together a great deal. My own church had reopened with strict numerical and covid arrangements in place earlier in the year, and I am unsure which way the church council will decide this time.

A very thoughtful and in my opinion absolutely correct advice.

Thank you Loraine and Andrew - Before watching this I had just come off the phone to a member who accused me of scaremongering at the Church Council, when all I want to do is protect my folk.
