Ive been in the live streaming business for over 20 years (yes I'm old). Come from and IT/Networking background, then moved into broadcast audio, Camera operating, DOPing and Vision mixing. I've done most things in the industry and as, like all of us love to learn new skills. Most of my job is finding solutions to technical problems, so have a wealth of knowledge on a LOT of technical subjects. So lets start sharing the love :) I hope you find this channel useful.

Thanks for making this video. Cheers!
From my thinking...if utilising 2 NICs i would prefer they are not on the same network in the first place this can cause Spanning tree loops and euin all network traffic. Instead i would prefer if considering segregation plug each NIC into a vlan capable Switch, and then "virtually" separating Dante and NDI/internet/other traffic that way. Having a seperate set of IP ranges and appropriate Layer 3 routing will alao allow you to control traffic across both VLAN segments, including blocking of specific ports if required. I avoid windows firewall at all costs and do in hardware (or prodominately in Virtual Sophos XG router sppliances actually...) You have definitely given me food for thought on using the Dual NICs in our vmix streamers though, because some testing tonight was getting a lot of poor audio and clicks and pops like you said...Not sure if it was NDI as we disabled that already...but could well have been any other network traffic, so gives a strong point for using seperate NICs for Dante regardless!
Thank you, boss. Can I use this setup to input any livestream software audio into vmix?
Yes. As long as the software allows you to choose the audio output device the. Simply choose virtual cable and off you go
Hi!!! Thanks for your videos, they are really useful. I work in a chroma key room and I have this silly doubt about how inserting a PPT in vMix if the PPT has green colors. The green of the CI style of the PPT is very similar to the chroma background, so the colors of the PPT disappear. Thanks in advance!!!
Castr is mandatory? there is no connections directly between LiveSolo Pro and vMix or OBS knowing that both has enoceder and decoder for RPTM and SRT? please
id like to know it too
Please do more of these. They are so good.
Thanks a lot!!!
tu peux faire pareil avec youtube
How did you setup your D300 to accept an rtmp stream from Castr?
how may switches are you using?
It is very primitive example. Could you explain how to send ANY shortcut from master vMix to slave vMix ? For example I press "A" shortcut on master PC, how to say this to slave vMix?
Can you connect to OBS too?
Hi. Yes you can. Any application that supports and RTMP, or now SRT pull down feed will work. OBS supports both. Castr now supports SRT so I would use that to pull down rather than RTMP as it's more reliable.
@@Streamingtech thank you i will try
Amazing. Thank you..This is what i was looking for
Thanks, very useful videos. The one thing I cannot work out is how do you manage to get 8 NDI feeds out of vMix? I thought the limit was 4 NDI outputs?
Thanks. If you enable inputs to NDI in the output tab in settings, all your cam inputs and vmix call inputs appear as NDI
I'm looking on the Castra website and I can't see which account you need to achieve RTMP Pulldown? Can you advise please?
I believe they all have rtmp and set pulldown. There is a limit of about 4-5 simultaneous pulldowns on the lower cost accounts. Their online chat is very helpful.
Just found your video. Great job! I would like for you to expand on latency.
mark
Great video!! Thank you so much for the information 🙂 Can we add the Castr link into OBS? I don't understand the message below
Hi yes, you can. Use the media input and switch of local and paste in the url. With castr you can now use SRT or RTMP pulls

Can a vmix caller use a Atem mini extreme macbook combo as opposed to the webcam on the laptop? I'm having frame rate problems with them. Their frame rate drops from 30-15fps but works perfectly if i have them unplug the atem and just use their crummy webcam. Can any one help?
Well, I’m gonna have to watch that about 3 more times to fully grasp everything. Great amount of info in there. Thanks much for all the laying out so much in a very short amount of time!
Olá, me ajudem na aquisicao de um material basico para lives alguem pode me ajudar?
Hi Jon! Excellent walk-thru!! I have a question regarding the return path out of the X32 and back to vMix using Buses E-G. You have eight callers and their paths out of vMix were: Caller 1 (A,L), Caller 2 (A,R) ... Caller 8 (D,R). On the return path for the Mix- you used only Bus E (Host, Caller 1), Bus F (Caller 2) and Bus G (Caller3). However, would you configure Buses E-G exactly like you did A-D? For example, Host-Caller 1 (E,L), Caller 2 (E,R), Caller 3 (F, L) ... Caller 8 (G,R)? Is my reasoning/logic correct if I have eight callers for a vMix show?
Hi. Glad it was helpful. Alas you can't do this on the returns as the buses sent back to the caller's cannot be split left/right, they get both sides of a bus :( for 8 caller's I would route all 8 out as described, and use two busses for returns. Assuming you have a host, Buss E to the host, which would I include all other caller's - the host of course and any other audio you want to send them. For me it would be a TalkBack (IFB) mic so I can talk to them as well. The other 7 caller's would receive bus F which you route all 8 caller's to internally in vmix. Vmix will sort the mix minus. I would then add an IFB mic to that mix as well (via Dante for me) so I can talk to all the others if I wanted. You then can mix the on air audio with your Dante mixer to get a better quality sound, but the caller's 2-8 are getting direct audio within vmix. If you wish you could do the same for your host, on their buss and bypass the Dante return all together. Hope that makes sense. It's a shame that you can't split a bus l/R to two caller's though :(
Thanks for the tutorial. Could the same be achieved on a switch level without messing with the Firewall? Some switch like Netgear AV line M4250 have some presets so that you can tell each port what kind of signal to expect (NDI, Dante, etc). Thanks for your valuable tips!
Is this usable for IRL streaming?
Can't tell you how useful this video has been! I've been scratching my head over this for weeks!
also, just a few mins back, I achieved switching the scene in obs with vmix on another pc, using the obs midi plugin along with the rtp midi , as you have revealed, thanks so much.
Hi Jon, I know this is an old video, but I just need to ask. Are you able to get a stereo program feed from the express up mini, or is it restricted to dual mono? Just ordered one, but in doubt if I can stereo monitor my program with it. 🤔 Love your setup and videos - it’s been to much inspiration! 👍🏻😊
Hey. The express IP mini is mono only. I send my main TX left and right to a mono bus out of the x32 and send to the program in on the mini. I don't need to monitor the left/right separation in most jobs.
@@Streamingtech thanks for your reply Jon! The reason we want stereo monitoring, is that we already twise have streamed for more than 5-10min in some cases in mono (left ch. only) and in most cases we can't get feedback from our viewers. Of course a proper TD or AE would have spotted a missing vu meter on the master, but we can only train our rotating staff in basic stuff. Its so much easier also to spot if audio is only coming into one ear :)
Nice work
I don’t understand you
Hi, is that a Beyerdynamic headset you are using? Is it dynamic or condenser mic? Best regards,
Hi. It's actually a Audio Technica bphs1 headset. Realy comfortable when worn all day :) www.audio-technica.com/en-gb/bphs1
Can't configure or midi doesn't respond to other machine though connected
I'm having the same problem.
How do I input desktop audio when VB cables cannot connect to spotify or to youtube? (let's say I want to stream with youtube video's playing in the background. Easy enough to get the video through desktop capture, but how do I get the audio?).
Well. In vmix you can simply add a website input. Just play TH-cam direct with vmix or obs. If you want to to bring it in via external app like chrome, make vb cable your default speaker output and then add vb cable to vmix as an Audio Input. However better to simply add TH-cam as a Web inout directly in vmix.
Out of interest, what make/model USB modems are you using? I've been using Huawei E3372, but found that O2 sims will not work, whereas Three & EE worked straight off. I put the same O2 sims in my phone and got full bars and fast speeds. Anyone else encountered this anomaly? I use this particular Huawei modem as it has 2 x mini antenna connectors (concealed in the side), which means I can use a Poynting 4G Omni LTE Antenna.
The problem with the Pull link is that it is very flakey. You need a solid signal. If you are in a poor signal area it will die very easily. What I do is stream to Castr and then out to Twitch. Then I bring Twitch in to vMix as a browser source. The delay is more obviously but it's actually far more reliable.
Solid signal where. If you are pulling into your broadcast vmix system, surley you are on a quality Internet connection. Castr now provide SRT pulls which are solid. I have never had a pull drop, and I have done over 300 at a time with castr. Perhaps we have our wires crossed, but the idea of this is to bring in a liveu solo feed into your production. Why would you go from liveu, to castr, then to twice and then bring that in? At least bypass castr. What you are suggesting is used when sending your tx encode to twitch.
@@Streamingtech Yes, it's true, I could set up rtmp in the LiveU portal direct to Twitch rather than Castr, and then bring Twitch in to vMix. But my point is that Twitch seems to hold the picture better than a direct pull into vMix. I'm sure I've not done 300 live stream broadcasts with the Live U, but I've done enough to know what works for me.
Surely it's pronounced Caster not Castra. As in broadcaster.
Great video - has given me some great ideas for the changes I need to make. Can you manage the ports on the Netgear switch from the DrayTek GUI?
Hi Jon, Thanks a lot for the video. What you do if you have 3 slidedecks and 3 speakers on different locations who wanna click their own slidedeck?
Thanks. I would load the decks onto the ppt computer and use interenet clickers ability to enable and disable a user. So all three log in, on the admin console you can switch on and off remote for each person. So just enable the one whos turn it is and disable the others. Hope that answers your question.
@Streamingtech - Could you please talk about your routing. I cannot seem to get the audio from the mix bus to the vMix input. Every caller input and VT input has audio and is working in the mixer. On my X-32, I have the user inputs on card, Inputs on card, and outputs both user and outputs on card. Where should they be routed? Also, the vMix audio outputs; Master Output I have selected as my local speaker in my monitor. I also had 15+16 and got no sound. I had to change that to 1+2 to get anything out. Does that mean I'm listening to the Dante channels 1+2? That's A left and right as I understand your video. I'm almost there with my audio routing, but need a nudge apparently. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the awesome videos, very helpful
I have problem with Dante when it’s output to a zoom session, the sound will become buzzing sound after awhile
Can this system be use to overlays on different system?
Sure. You can trigger anything vmix supports with shortcuts
@@Streamingtech Alright. Thank you. I'll try it out
Base on this video is your SRT cable link to a switcher or is it to a camera
audio is not exclusively used in windows
Hello Jon, great video. One question: what is the name of the intercom software you showed in the end of the video?
Hi. That will be unity intercom
I think now you can select the Preferred NIC in NDI 5, the Acceess Manager provide this new feature in its Advanced settings.
Yes you can and it works great. New video soon on this.
does this work for you? it still tries to use my wifi even if i say "Ethernet" as preferred
John love your videos, please keep at it ! Also is it possible to use the X32 as a control surface (I know you use x32 rack which is not the same) to send MIDI commands over Ethernet using RTP-MIDI. I have tried this and can not connect RTP to the x32.
Hi thanks Lee. If you have an x32 you can use it as a midi controller as well. If I remeber the bus master faders become midi controllers. Just enable midi mode on the desk. The x32 manual has details on this.
Thank you for this!
Have you tried with multiple solos simultaneous? I am thinking about it to do REMI and I wonder if anyone tried it. My guess is even if it has some delay it wouldn´t be that much would it?
