great review, thanks man!
When you installed the 64GB of Ram, that was 32 after just removing the cover. The second 32 you had to dissemble to get it replaced, correct?
what is the point of 64gig of ram, I thought the cpu in these could only address 16 gig. FWIW I put a 16 gig stick in mine so running 20 all together which works fine for me.
Hi, I've just installed 16GB of RAM. And yes the second RAM slot is "inside" the case so that you have to dissemble the NAS to get to the slot. BR
does it come with the little screws to mount the drives or do you have to get those elsewhere?
Hey, there are screw’s in the package for the SSDs. At 1:58 you can see them ☺️. BR
Is the RAM you used on the compatibility list for that model? I want to upgrade the RAM on my Lockerstor 6 Gen2 but the list is... small lol
Hi, no my RAM is not on the list and yes. the list ist very small. But so far it works fine. BR
@@Esperto84 Thanks for your reply. I'm just wondering if it's running at the speed advertised or if it gets capped out. I know it's unbuffered ECC SODIMM RAm, but is there a way to check? I already ordered TEAMGROUP 16GB 3200 CL32 RAM, but if I can get away with returning it for someting faster that will actually run at the listed speed, then I will. (I have the Lockerstor 6 Gen2, just out of the box, haven't booted it up yet)
@MRG1BZ I’m not sure if there is another way to check the RAM speed, but I checked it in the BIOS and it shows the correct speed.
@@Esperto84 amazing! Thanks!
Is this compatible with Linux?
Hi, unfortunately I didn't test this use case and I can't tell you if this is compatible with Linux. Also I fount nothing in the manual. Maybe one of the commenter knows something about that.
How is it that in the specific list it says 1(X4) while in bios it states that in the first place it can read up to 4 disks with the expandable card through it Pcie raid option in first pcie x16_3 slot ?? my motherboard is asus rog strix b 450 f gaming ii
Hi, as far as I interpret the compatibility list correctly, your mainboard does support the Hyper Card, but only with one drive in the PCIEX_3 slot. To be able to access 4 drives you have to plug the card into the first PCIE slot. The other slots do not support bifurcation. Maybe you can use 2 drives in the second slot, it says 0/2(4X+4X), but here you should make sure that you don't “cut off” any PCIE lanes that are shared by the first and second slot. BR
@@Esperto84 thanks
how's your RAID5 - BTRFS config going after 1 year?
Hi, no problems so far. I had one issue with a HDD and I had to exchange the HDD, but the rebuilding process of the RAID worked fine.
I have the same motherboard and your video helped me figure it out!! Thank you!!
@Esperto, Nice detailed video, Thanks! 😄 I have a question for you, if you can't answer because you didn't test it, that is fine: Can AS6704T with Plex encode at least 2x 1080P high bitrate files and subtitles simultaneously to 720p, or does the CPU throttle?
Thank you. I didn't test your scenario exactly, but I've open 2 1080p movies and activate the subtitle. I did it with JellyFin in two separate browser windows. The CPU usage was about 5 to 8% per video. I didn't see anything strange. Also downsampling to 720p seems to be no problem. The CPU usage doesn't change that much, maybe by 2 or 3%. I hope this helps a little bit 😊
@@Esperto84 Thank you for your fast response! Your answer helps, for sure 🙂
The website says 8 gb max supported. 16gb works?
Yes, and on their website is stated that 2x8GB is supported. (www.asustor.com/en-gb/product/spec?p_id=77=) And I think, I'm not 100 percent sure anymore, but one person here in the comment said, that also 32 GB are working, but I didn't test this statement.
I am having such a hard time removing the SATA board right now, I’ve taken out the screw but nothing, it won’t budge!
That sounds strange. Perhaps Asustor has released a new revision. Have you checked to see if there is another screw or even some other mechanism holding the SATA board in place? I hope Asustor haven't glued or even soldered the board in place, which is illogical as otherwise you can no longer access the other components.
NO Stereo, its only MONO
I bought a Hyper M2. and have a x670E, but It does not work. Do I need to put it in the PCIEXX16 1? and the 4080 Super on PCIEX2? if I do that will the VIdeo Card be slower? I aalso have the 4 M.2 slots from the Motherboard full. ROG Strix Asus x670E- E Gaming Wifi is the Mobo I Have.
Hi, from my experience I would suggest you put the Hyper M2 card in the first PCI16 slot and your graphics card in the third PCI16 slot. You still need to activate bifurcation in the BIOS. If you are concerned about graphics card performance, I recommend doing a benchmark without the Hyper M2 card while the graphics card is in slot 1 and then after the Hyper card is in slot 1 and the graphics card is in slot 3. Then you will know exactly, but I suspect that there won't be too much difference. If you put the graphics card in the second slot, then the PCI lanes will be split between the first and second slots and there won't be enough available, so the graphics card should be in the third slot, which is tied to the chipset. I hope this helps you. BR

Not a fan of the crucial P3 drives there TBW is pretty aweful. For example the 2TB drive has a TBW of 440 TBW which frankly sucks, when compare to other drive of similar prices from brand named companies have 1200tb.
Hey, at the time of filming SSD price were pretty high. The intention was that as read and write cache it wouldn't be that bad if a SSD failed because I doesn't store any important data on them.
And forget quarter of video card's performance..

@@Esperto84 which mainboard is this?
It's the ASUS ROG STRIX X570-F Gaming
@@Esperto84 Did you have a gpu test after connected? It's impossible to have full performance..
Well, the mainboard can support SLI configuration and I'm pretty sure it handles the gpu in the lower PCIe slot well. At least I have no complains nor issues with gaming or video rendering. I'm not a person who bothers about 2 or 3 percent performance difference if that would be the case.
Can Ram be ecc?
There is nothing in the manual that says you can use ECC RAM and according to my internet research it is probably not possible to use ECC RAM.
btrfs and raid 5. Are you really sure about what you are doing?
What are you getting at? The possibility of parity calculation errors with this combination?
You do camera equipment reviews, yet your videos look like you did not put any effort into editing and especially color grading... everything looks really inconsistent between shots and especially your outdoor shots look really flat. Does not inspire confidence into your opinion about equipment.

Hey Esperto! Thanks for the video! I have an ASUS Hyper card with 4 SSDs in my motherboard, and looking to add another card. However, it seems like there are only Threadripper platforms that support more than one bifrucated lane. Do you think this could come to regular consumer motherboards in the future?
Hi, I don't think so, because the industry still wants to differentiate between consumer and business hardware. On the one hand, I don't see a trend for more PCI lanes in consumer CPUs at the moment and on the other hand, the manufacturers want to continue to earn a decent amount of money. Personally, I would prefer to be able to assemble certain PC components myself. For example, you could have a mainboard with the function of bifurcating all PCI slots and a CPU with many PCI lanes and a few fewer CPU cores or slightly lower clock rates or several chipsets on the mainboard, which can process the data in conjunction with the CPU. The possibilities are seemingly limitless, at least in my mind. 😉 You could practically really build your own PC. "Just my two cents"
@@Esperto84 Thanks! Yoo, that would be awesome! Then it would be truly modular in every sense, and you could completely tailor everything to your need! Which I sort of feel is the basis of PC building anyways, so it’s a shame that it is not attainable at the moment, but if we keep pushing perhaps we could see it in the future☺️ Yeah, those threadrippers and their mobos are crazy expensive! So we would be bulding the parts that make up our PC to save on the actual parts. Pc-building inception😂 Thanks again man! - greetings from Norway🇳🇴

Excellent videos with very clear explanation. One question please, Can we use SSD NVMe as a volume only or only SSD caching? I want to use NAS to backup 2TB data.
Thank you 😃 You can use SSD as normal volumes. I did that too. You don’t have to use the SSD as a cache. Another commenter also mentioned that, if you initialise the NAS with a SSD as Volume 1 then the HDDs “can hibernate” because the OS will be installed on the SSDs. BR Esperto
Sure ,ssd as read write cache need 2 ssds , read cache only need 1. and you can create volume for data on ssd.

Hi, I've used a PH2 so a Philips Head size 2. Just pause the video at 01:06
Can i connect this externally?
With a PCIe riser cable? I'm not sure but technically it could work.
Will this card work on any motherboard??
Theoretically yes, but there are some things to consider. First the card uses a PCIe 16x connector and for every SSD you'll install 4 PCIe Lanes are used. Now it depends on your motherboards specifications. If you have a full 16x PCIe slot which is in the most cases the first two slots your board must support bifurcation if you want to use all 4 available NVME slots. It is important to know how your motherboard cuts the PCI lanes between the different slots and which slots are directly connected to the CPU or chipset. I would suggest you to study the manual of your motherboard and if your actual PC configuration (graphic card and maybe other PCIe cards you have already installed) are compatible with the hyper cards requirements. I'll hope that will help. BR Esperto
Excellent Video.! If I use only 2 14TB HDs, what Raid config would be best? Then, can I add a 3rd 14 TB HD in the future if needed? Thanks.
Thanks. With 2 driver I would say RAID 1 is a good start. You'll literally save your data twice and you'll have a total storage of 14 TB. Later with a third drive you could switch to RAID 5. Then you'll have 28TB storage and the third drive is the parity drive. But maybe anybody here have also a different suggestion? BR
5:50 If you want more speed you DO NOT do link aggregation. Instead you connect both net interfaces to switch and have smb multichannel working. Link aggregation and smb multichannel are mutually exclusive.
Hi, thanks for this tip. Indeed I have this option enabled in the ADM SMB settings.

@@Esperto84 Yes apparently - want to test it out for us?! ;)
Of course, if my 16GB isn't enough anymore 😄
Yeah, looking closer at the Intel spec sheet it is 16Gb max "per channel" (if you read the little "?" explanations. So 32Gb :) @@Esperto84
Yeah, and also the max memory speed is 2933 MT/s but a 3200 MT/s module was pre-installed 😆
nice video thanks! something i learned the hard way: Volume 1 (in your case the one made up from HDDs) is the one that actually has the operating system installed. This means the drives it is installed on will never shut down (if you have for example docker containers running) This is why i would suggest you initialize (first setup) with only NVME drive in, so your system can be installed on faster, lower power consuming and much quieter drive also be carefull with those nvme drives, they are only consumer level drives and if you move a lot of data, you can easily kill them very fast. For example the WD red nvme drives can read/write several times more data before they die than regular drives you put in. thanks and good luck
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Actually I have docker containers running. I know that the NVMEs have a limited write volume, but I don't think that much data goes through the cache. But I will keep an eye on the SMART values of the NVME SSDs and switch to Enterprise SSDs if necessary. BR Esperto
You put slower RAM in it than it calls for. The site states 2933. Probably wont notice it for the most part, but it could slow you a bit at times.
Yeah, based on their website I thought a 300 MT/s different won't be noticeable that much. But instead a faster RAM was installed. But I'm good with that and I could upgrade it anytime anyway. 😀
@@Esperto84size is much more important than speed while talk about RAM
I think it relates also to the purpose. If I want a system which has to be responsive in the fastest way I would try to use the fastest components I get. And it also a question of your budget and needs.
Uhhh ohhh.. somebody doesn't understand that higher frequency means higher latency which basically cancels out the higher frequency...
@@tim3172this has been scientifically disproven multiple times by multiple different sources, via math as well as testing. The higher frequencies can and do make up for the latency increase in almost all cases There are very few use cases where the requirement for small latency is so great that the actual speed doesn't matter, but in almost every other case the overall performance of the system is far more important than just acknowledging a request quickly, you do need to actually get the data to the processor too
Ok... how do I start? I watched your video because it got recommended to me. I already watched other videos about the Mantispod & mantispod 2. So I knew pretty well how it works and was sticking around for the comparison. I once owned a gorilla pod, but lost it and know I'm thinking about getting something new for travel / vloging style of videos. I like it when I stumble over small channels on YT and always encourage them to keep it up. So here is some feedback: I felt like you have some great ideas (really liked the ending with the cap) but overhall I felt like your video was a bit lost and its "story" progressed pretty slow. Maybe try to write a script / more detailed script and make a shotlist what you need to shoot. -> this way you won't forget to record some clips to get your transitions. please don't promote your channel right at the start of your video! it's ok to do it at the end or say something about liking the video in the middle of it. your preview right before your intro is nice and that you said that you shoot with different cameras made you interesting for me, but the "please like" part doesn't make sense. You didn't gave me any new informatiom ahout the video topic which I didn't already knew from the title and then you ask me / the viewers to like it? I think the music you choose doesn't fit very well. it's kinda chill and reminds me moreof drone shots from forests or beaches. try maybe something faster that would also help with the speed of the video. I hope you take this as "konstruktive kritik" keep it up! - a fellow german

Or does any drives on the board show up as one single drive? And 2- does the board use 4pcie lanes in total, or does it try to use 4 per drive, therefore using bandwidth that could/should be used by my flu in the x16 slot at the top? &1 things i follow 1have only 1 pice micron 2400 nvme m.2 card ,it support & detect only 1st slot ,but when i open & put on 2nd slot it not detected in my windows but hyper card led work please help me... i cant understand that its my nvme support issue or card issue I’m very confused 🤔
Hi, each NVME SSD has to be initialized in the Windows Disk Management. After that step every SSD will show up as a separate drive. To your second question. My observations shows that the Hyper Card use all 16 pci lanes if you are using 4 SSDs. On my motherboard the first two pcie slots shares 16 lanes and if I'm using just 2 SSDs I can still use another device on the second slot but this device will have only 8 lanes. But that depends on your motherboard and every brand has different pcie configurations. To your micron nvme issue. I have just a tip. Can you set in your BIOS the option for bifurcation? This must be set for the pcie slot else I think the expansion card and its first SSD will just recognize as one device. I hope this will help. BR Esperto

Please tell me how to do the same thing with my Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR4 motherboard. My SSDs are ADATA 2TB and second is Samsung 970 Evo 500GB in Asus Rog Hyper M.2 card.
Hi, I'm not familiar with the Gigabyte motherboard and your computer setup but as far as I can tell from the manual your board has 3 PCIe Slots with fully supported 16 PCIe lanes. Now it could be possible that you can just install your Hyper card into slot 2 or 3. I guess that the PCIe lanes from the first slot are directly connected to the CPU while the other lanes from the slot 2 and 3 are connected to the chipset. I'm not sure if you have to set anything in the BIOS but it doesn't hurt if you look through all settings due to any kind of bifurcation settings. 3 of the 4 M.2 sockets on the board are connected to the chipset which means that 28 lanes are splitted up to them and the 2 other PCIe slots. So if you use all M.2 sockets on the board and want to use all 4 available M.2 slots of the Hyper card that could lead to not recognized SSDs in your Hyper card. I'll hope that helps. BR
@@Esperto84 Thanks for your time and explanation. But only one M.2 SSD slot were busy, it was օն top of տհե video card - 980 Pro 1TB SSD (Win 11 OS), all other places were without any SSDs, so this can you tell me how to solve this issue? How i can use 2x SSD on Asus Hyper M.2 card? could it be the reason that my m/board doesn't recognize the 2x SSDs from Hyper M.2 card, it need the Asus Rog Strix Z690 Gaming-E motherboard or Asus Z690 Maximum Hero M/board?
@@Emperor-2029 Well, can you run your system on the onboard graphic (if you have a CPU with integrated GPU) and put the Hyper card in the first slot. Just to be sure the SSDs are working fine (and also will be recognized). If so and it is just working on the first PCIe slot I would suggest to contact Gigabyte customer support as well as Asus customer support. Maybe Asus will update their compatibility list because it's just goes until the 590-chipsets. And maybe they have also a solution for you. I don't want to recommend to you to buy another expensive board if it is not necessary. If I understand it correctly you have 3 free M.2 slot on the board, why do you don't want to use them? Asking the people on reddit and on the forum site of Gigabyte and Asus can also be an option. I'm running out of ideas here but I'll hope you'll find a quick and easy solution. Let me know if you found one. Thanks
@@Esperto84 i have put Hyper M.2 card to the first slot(and the same time i have put RTX 3090 video card to the second PCIE slot), but it was not supported there also 2x M.2 SSDs. What else you suggest me to test for this issue?
@@Emperor-2029 Just to be sure that the SSDs are working fine (and I think they do), can you plug the SSDs directly to the M.2 sockets on the boards and see if they will be recognized? Also, did the Asus Hyper card works in another Computer before? If so I'll think your Gigabyte maybe doesn't support the Hyper card. And one last chance to find out if the Hyper card is working, did you have any colleagues or friends who might have a Asus mainboard and try the card in their system.
Unwatchable with this audio left channel nonsense 👎🏻
