I have ADHD and you are getting to tag along while I flit between sewing, spinning, weaving, knitting, woodworking, embroidery, upholstery, cooking, quilting, history, and anything else that catches my attention. Hold on to your hats!!
Building a Dye House Part I - Building Demo
After 27 years of our owning the property, we finally have decided what to do with the old building we call the barn. It's going to become Scott's blacksmithing and woodworking workshop, and a dye house for me!! I can so thrilled finally to be able to do my dyeing someplace besides my kitchen. There's lots of work to do before that can happen. What you are about to see is just the beginning.

Recreating a 1940s Apron from the Real Thing
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A friend gifted me a 1940s apron (identical to a Fruit of the Loom one she has) that used to belong to her grandmother, and I liked it so much that I decided to make a pattern from it and use it to sew an apron using one of my fabric designs. Of course, I had to make a mock-up first, and that was almost cooler then the real project. You can buy this (and lots other) fabric(s) at: www.spoonflowe...

Makeover Time!
มุมมอง 1244 ปีที่แล้ว
I decided to stop waiting for something special to happen to get a makeover (just hair, not make-up). I figured out that in order to feel good about yourself, you need to allow yourself to feel good. So, I did it and am taking you along for the ride. Thank you Kathy Hietpas for your work. Also, Kathy gives some great advice on hair care products about which I was clueless. Keto Sauteed Spinach

This is a great dish all on its own or as an additional to other dishes. Sure beats that slimy canned or frozen stuff! You can personalize it by adding red bell peppers, or carrots, or mushrooms, or whatever else you want. Also, great with kale, and would be good with any greens. Delicious!!!! Benita's Seasoning Salt
มุมมอง 684 ปีที่แล้ว
Rather than having many bottles and jars of seasons that you use on a regular basis surrounding you as you work, why not combine them into blends so you have less to take out and put away. This is the seasoning salt blend that I use the most, and it's great for veggies, chicken, hamburgers, steak, and just about everything. I want to thank Townsends for the idea with their Kitchen Pepper recipe...

So, Which is Better: Wool, Cotton or Acrylic? The Sock Experiment
Thieve look great and tasty. ❤❤❤
Look delicious!
Still checking on you to make sure you are ok.
Thank you for the precise details on how to scour yarn! So useful!
Jist bought one , and thank you for the true review
Your apron is beautiful, thank you
I've been wondering for years if this was possible. Thank you for the demo and explanation!
Congrats on your new home. Can't wait till you find you patterns. Looking forward to the day till I can make it.
Hi Benita. How could I get a paper copy of your apron. Simply beautiful. I've checked every where.
I don't have access to it right now. We had to sell our house and move, and most of my studio is still in boxes. I am hoping that later this summer, I can get to them. I will keep you in mind when I find it.
👍
I have one from my grandmother or my MILs mother. I can't remember. I want to copy it as well in a heavier fabric than the very thin cotton it is, and very thin from use.
The green side is nice as a Christmas apron. Also, that’s an awesome vintage apron. By the way, I do the same thing with my towels that’s why I like those ties to come around the front as well especially when you do a cooking marathon, you really need a towel like that!
I recently took a cooking class and when I tied my apron strings around the front and tucked a towel in, everyone looked at me, then did the same. :)
❤another wool lover. I love the feeling of being covered with wool. Often have also too large for me from the thrift shop. But loving it so much. Which brands do you recommend to look for when searching second hand?
Love it!
Hi Benita i just watched your tutorial on the 1940s vintage apron. I just love how it tyrned out. I would love to have your pattern. Believe it or not i use the brown paper for my patterns too. Thank you for sharing.
Unfortunately I can't send it right now. We moved and my studio remains unpacked (it's been an incredibly busy year). I simply have no idea which box it might be in. If you do a search for 1940s apron pattern, you might be able to find it elsewhere.
What a great experiment, thanks!
Real men wear 100% cotton socks in wet freezing weather. Wool is for sissies!
Yes, than you. We have one nearly identical. I've not wanted to open it to see it more cleatly. My aister owns it now and I hope to made a replica. ❤
Very cool! I never knew till today that the modern (little plastic) winder was related to the spinning wheel. Good to know!
So you scoure and take out tannins just to put tannins back in when mordanting?
I'll be following this video and stating scouring my linen tomorrow. going to watch next step video.
Nice! Are the handkerchiefs cotton?
Was cross back aprons in the 1940's? When were they first designed?
Thank you for posting this awesome video. My wife and I bought a Clock Reel at an estate sale. Made around 1878, or earlier. The gears are jammed and spokes missing. But thanks to your video I can fix it and use it
How can I get a pattern?
I do that with a towel too. Although I also use pockets! I’m wondering if the neck could be higher in front? Do you have the pattern available somewhere?
Sure the neck could be higher if you made it higher. I thought about adding a pocket. Still thinking about it. Might have to try it. :)
Would you be willing to make a copy of the pattern? I love vintage aprons and will pay for a paper copy. Any kind of paper, newsprint, brown paperbag, butcher paper, anything. Please direct message me!! Love this!
Sure! Email me your mailing address - thefiberpusher@yahoo.com. It'll be brown paper as that's the only thing I have large enough.
It's so beautifully 😍
Thank you! I enjoy looking at each hanging on my wall. So glad I finished it.
You’re not trying to keep yourself cold in the winter. You are trying to keep yourself warm. Try again with warm water and then go back and see which one is not warm anymore. Maybe use a thermometer. DUH!!! Stupid experiment. If i ever want to stay frozen in the winter I’ll re watch this video.
Which is why wool socks are better. They keep your feel warm in the winter even if your feet get wet. This is what the experiment was about.
How do I know if is a real wool 🧦?
They should be labeled as such when you buy them. As for mine, I knit my own socks so know they are wool. There are burn tests you can do, but that would damage the socks, so...
excellent experiment🐞
Wish I had your pattern.
This is such a sweet video. Thank you so much for doing this. What great captures. {{{huhg}}}
I just found your channel! I love your content and I am Binge Watching it now! I hope you put out more videos in the future! <3 Amazing work!
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing, I'm ready to make my own apron
Please share it! I would love to see yours!!
How do I make an alkanet root dye?
Where are links?
I started quilting 2 years ago and I have 3 quilt tops I haven’t finished yet…I figure I better finish before I have 5 years worth of unfinished projects😁
Yes, please, and I'd love to see what you are making!
That is so special to finish something you started & came to see it finished. I have a watercolor grid quilt that needs to get started & this inspires me to consider getting it completed.
Yay!!! I'd love to see it when you get it done!
Can you use loaf pan bread for this recipe?
I don't know, I've never tried. If you try it, let me know how it turns out, please.
I wonder if the weights that stayed the same or gained are due to not being really dry. that would take a long time in those skeins.
I got dissapointing results from Walnut a few months ago
I think the problems with the concentrated colour alcohol and everclear dye baths that don't impart a colour to the wool any different to the water dye bath are mostly because the dye is not binding to the mordant used, at least not at the temperatures reached in the sun. The dye extracts are very soluble in alcohol but slightly soluble in water, however they aren't binding chemically very well to the mordant. It may be worth researching alternative natural mordants, like soy milk. The extracts from the bark may include oils which would case issues of the dye uptake. A drop or two of dawn dish soap would act as a surfactant to break down the surface tension of the oils allowing the dye to be absorbews.
I just found quilt tops last week! My incredible 83 yo mom is finishing them for me❤
Oh and something so very similar to your small watercolor! yours is beautiful. inspirational for sure😊
Oh how wonderful! I have a partially quilted quilt that was pieced by a beloved cousin (same generation as my grandmother, though) who has since passed away. Once I get settled into my new home, I want to pull it out and finish quilting it. I'd love to see the results of the quilt your mom is finishing for you.
just bought the earthquake mc33. I've assembled and just bought a quart of pre-mixed fuel (50:1). Plan to fire up later today and do some tilling tomorrow. Will let you know how it does. Thanks for the great information.
Have fun!!!
Update: I did run the tiller. It performed pretty well. It's light, so it bounced around some going forward. It was definitely easier to control, pulling it backwards. A few weeks ago we had borrowed a friend's corded electric tiller and found this pulling backwards to be better, also. Comparing the two, the gas powered Earthquake did much better than the electric. It was easier to control, faster and no worries about the cord.
Great video. Topic of watercolor quilt starts at 6:45.
Made these and froze half of them, so i had them. These were amazing, thank you so much for sharing. I'm making another batch tomorrow. ❤
So glad you liked them!
i hear poly fiber is causing health problems in children.
Thanks for your video. Can you reuse the alum acetate again? Would it need reheating or adding more alum acetate? Thanks
You can use the AA again. I just add more according to the dry weight of what needs mordanted. Also, no heat is needed.
Thanks very much. I will try this next time i mordant .
I just love you! Thank you for the great tutorials!
Thank you!
