Building a Dye House Part I - Building Demo
After 27 years of our owning the property, we finally have decided what to do with the old building we call the barn. It's going to become Scott's blacksmithing and woodworking workshop, and a dye house for me!! I can so thrilled finally to be able to do my dyeing someplace besides my kitchen. There's lots of work to do before that can happen. What you are about to see is just the beginning.

Recreating a 1940s Apron from the Real Thing
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A friend gifted me a 1940s apron (identical to a Fruit of the Loom one she has) that used to belong to her grandmother, and I liked it so much that I decided to make a pattern from it and use it to sew an apron using one of my fabric designs. Of course, I had to make a mock-up first, and that was almost cooler then the real project. You can buy this (and lots other) fabric(s) at: www.spoonflowe...

The green side is nice as a Christmas apron. Also, that’s an awesome vintage apron. By the way, I do the same thing with my towels that’s why I like those ties to come around the front as well especially when you do a cooking marathon, you really need a towel like that!

Unfortunately I can't send it right now. We moved and my studio remains unpacked (it's been an incredibly busy year). I simply have no idea which box it might be in. If you do a search for 1940s apron pattern, you might be able to find it elsewhere.

You’re not trying to keep yourself cold in the winter. You are trying to keep yourself warm. Try again with warm water and then go back and see which one is not warm anymore. Maybe use a thermometer. DUH!!! Stupid experiment. If i ever want to stay frozen in the winter I’ll re watch this video.

I think the problems with the concentrated colour alcohol and everclear dye baths that don't impart a colour to the wool any different to the water dye bath are mostly because the dye is not binding to the mordant used, at least not at the temperatures reached in the sun. The dye extracts are very soluble in alcohol but slightly soluble in water, however they aren't binding chemically very well to the mordant. It may be worth researching alternative natural mordants, like soy milk. The extracts from the bark may include oils which would case issues of the dye uptake. A drop or two of dawn dish soap would act as a surfactant to break down the surface tension of the oils allowing the dye to be absorbews.

Update: I did run the tiller. It performed pretty well. It's light, so it bounced around some going forward. It was definitely easier to control, pulling it backwards. A few weeks ago we had borrowed a friend's corded electric tiller and found this pulling backwards to be better, also. Comparing the two, the gas powered Earthquake did much better than the electric. It was easier to control, faster and no worries about the cord.
