A Tale of Two Bases, The Long Beach Naval Station and Naval Shipyard
มุมมอง 8K5 ปีที่แล้ว
The Long Beach Naval Station and Naval Shipyard played a critical role in the history and development of Long Beach, California. To Commemorate these bases, a video legacy has been produced which takes viewers through the earliest beginnings of the base and shipyard in the 1930s through to their closing in the 1990s. "A Tale of Two Bases," features vintage war footage from World War II, the Kor...

I remember visiting the closed shipyard in the early 2000s. I worked for a local non-profit and we were allowed to take a few computers, etc. It was so sad to see the base or what little was left of it. It must have been a sight to see in it's heyday and in turn the city must have thrived from having it there. At the same time, I felt some kind of presence as I looked around. I am not superstitious in any way, but it was like the ghosts of all the hundreds of thousands who must have worked or passed through that dockyard. It felt like a special place and such an important part of American history. But now it is gone, erased and forgotten by younger generations.
It's all gone now. No drydocks, no piers. The US could use it now to correct the backlog of repair work needed on current ships. China will soon start a new Pacific Ocean War and the US will be short of shipyards. Mare Island and Long Beach naval shipyards were closed about the same time and Hunter's Point 20 years earlier. At least one of them should have been mothballed. But it was all politics. Instead of using Long Beach, the navy spent millions building a new naval station in Everett, WA. when all of the facilities already existed. I was stationed in Long Beach in 1968-9 on a destroyer. We were overhauled over the winter. A lot of capabilities were thrown away when they closed the shipyard and station. I suppose more than a few admirals got cushy retirement jobs.
I spent time there while I served in the U.S. Navy. It was a Destroyer Naval Base. Land of the "Tin Can Sailors". Biggest Bar ashore in town was "Georges Roundup" with a Big Golden Harley Davidson Motorcycle in the Front Window. Am 81yrs now but still have those memories. Live in the Mid-West
My father retired in 1959 after being station at the Long Beach naval station . After retirement my family did almost all of our business there . My siblings and I would get early every Saturday morning to go with our father to ,have breakfast , he would get a hair cut , shop , he would visit friends , and j would beg him to drive in the area where a number of naval ships where docked . I loved looking at the ships . There was a hospital ship there for a long time where my little sister and I got out measles vaccination . Near the hospital ship , used to be an old WW2 Gato class submarine tied up . Both of those ships stayed there for a very long time . I have great memories from those days.
That’s so interesting. Wow! ❤
My ship spent time in the 39:09
It wasnt a surprise to FDR the demonrat party was always evil . Even JFK got the mob to deliver Illinoiis . Nixon won the 1960 Presidential election !!!!
Stationed there in 64 when my ship USS Porterfield DD 682 was drydocked there, I was 18 and spent time at the Pike and rode the bus up to LA
I was at the Naval ship Yard when they had the last auction for all the machine tools. The floors in the workshops were made from wood. Only other auction or old industrial build I ever visited was the largest locomotive repair facilities this side of the Mississippi river. That was in San Bernardino I think. Maybe one day we will buy back the land from the Chinese container companies. I'm hoping so.
My family and I used that stuff! I worked there until 95'
All those patriotic men and women who proudly served there are turning over in their graves now. Our sworn enemy the communist Chinese now owns a sizable portion of the port of long beach, thanks to leftist politicians. Namely Bill Clinton.
best DUSTA ever!
My father worked building & finishing ships during WWII for the armed forces. He was 1A, but was such a fine/master craftsman they locked him in there for the duration of the war. I have no photos of him there but wish I could find some as well as any written documentation of the years he spent working at Long Beach shipyards! Does anyone have a clue how I could find out more about my dad’s time spent there? I really have no idea how to search those details out. Thanks so much.
Hey cheryl! You are very lucky for your father to have worked at the long beach shipyards. Its sad they shut down! I wish they were open!
Maybe check out the historical society of long beach, you might find info there
Did Long Beach sale the port to China?
No
Need some insight on how to apply
Paul R Williams, I'll have to look for a documentary.
I worked there from 1983 to 1988 in the FFG 7 planning yard and transferred to Public Works.between 1988 and 1991. I loved working there.
