Steel vs lead cartridge test
มุมมอง 51721 วันที่ผ่านมา
Is our sport under threat if the proposed lead ban comes in? In this video, I take a look at two lead alternative cartridges and really put them to the test by comparing them to some of the best lead cartridges on the market. The steel cartridges are under pressure from the start because they are lighter cartridges. Can lighter cartridges still do the business? See how the "honey badger" perfor...

B&P Legend size 9 vs 80yd battue
มุมมอง 10Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Using a size 9 1/2 (9 UK) B&P Legend on an 80 yard battue target at Garlands near Tamworth, Staffs. As stated in the video, I would not use this size cartridge in a competition scenario. I would probably choose a 7 1/2 for this target. By using a cartridge containing larger pellets, the shot would carry more energy downrange and therefore, should need less pellets to break the clay and be less ...
Does adding cartridges affect the balance of a shotgun?

A video in response to some comments online, that believe it is a waste of time balancing a shotgun, when empty because it alters when cartridges are loaded. As you will see, it makes just about zero difference to the balance.

Best viewed on large screen or TV. A quick video of a right handed, left eye dominant shooter, showing two different pairs of left to right targets, that a cross dominant shooter would normally struggle with. The first following pair (starting at about 0.18) are seen from the left hand bush, the second pair are launched from the small tower, with an incoming direction. With the Eye D Rail insta...

Kegworth Stand 13 020423

First time I've seen this on a Sporting competition. 4 singles, full use of gun, so two shots available if required, on one target. Hit 3 out of 4 with first shot. Briefly forgot I had both barrels available on 2nd bird meant I missed with both shots. Doh. (Not me shooting, I thought that I'd video the stand after my turn)

I bought lead curtain weights off Amazon, they’re fabric covered so you can snip the little lead balls off to achieve the balance. Then stuff the bolt hole with bubble wrap and fit the coiled curtain weights in and refit the butt plate and the weights don’t move.
@@bartram33 Thanks for sharing another viable option
One more thing that I forgot to put in the video. Please treat the refs with respect and thank them when leaving their stand. It's lovely being a ref on a summer's day but most of them are the same ones doing it, shivering in the wet and cold of winter.
Thank you for an informative an insightful video on CPSA registered shoots. I hope to compete in my first shoot soon.
@mharvey7788 You're very welcome, I'm just trying to put information out there, that other channels don't tend to cover.
@@AdamsClayPigeonGuide That's a great idea! I noticed you're wearing Pillas and was thinking of getting a set. I think a video on how you chose your glasses would be great also!
@@mharvey7788I'll add it to the list of ones to do
@AdamsClayPigeonGuide That's great! Thanks Adam!
@mharvey7788 Anything else I can help with or any other suggestions, just ask.
For O/U, the shells are light compare to gun's weight and they are positioned very close to the weight center of the gun and between your hands. So even without test or calculation, we can conclude that they have very tiny impact on the balance of the gun. However, if you are a seasoned shooter, you can still feel the difference. It would not impact your shooting that much physically. If yes, that would be on the mental side.
Just the video I needed, recently joined the cpsa and hoping to do my first registered soon. Wasn’t sure your that close!! I’m usually at barbury I live near wantage.
@nickbennett7278 Glad it helped. Barbury is a nice ground. A few of us did the Pro One this year.
That was interesting . I didn't think there would be any chance at all , but I would not have bet my life on it !

@JifeLacket Thank you. Next video within a couple of days and it's a biggie.
1:24 - 1:25 it looks like 25 sizes of clay to right, it looks like some UP ... cheesz.... this is big gap between clay and aim point..
@abrampl Yes about 3m of lead was how I saw it when taking the shot.
Greetings from Poland!
Nice one 👍 im new to shooting and the crap out there is shocking, lets keep it simple 👍 thanks again
Your conclusions are perfectly valid. Might have lessened confusion if you had just left out the "stopped gun" example. Still and super fast would have demonstrated your valid point.
@the45er I hear what you're saying Rob but I wanted to include that example, to show that stopping your gun, doesn't have any affect either. I have often seen comments regarding this connotation of "stopping the gun" too.
I'm assuming some folk are under the impression that they can effect shot pattern by quickly moving the muzzles? alot like water from a hose pipe? I've heard this ridiculous claim several times and it's insane. A 28 gram lead load is roughly 3/4 inch in length in a cartridge and would be roughly that length as it exists the muzzle at an average of 1300fps. It's isn't humanly possible to have any influence on shot spread.
@stevenlord782 Totally agree but unfortunately, it's out there and some take it in.
@@AdamsClayPigeonGuide yup. Flat earthers Adam. Here's one to watch on u tube. Surviving Duck season. The shot pattern in slowmo. Absolutely fascinating. Also Bob Brister called out this myth in the 70's with his excellent book. Shotguns the Art and Science.
I don't think people fully understand how fast the shot is leaving the barrel. I know it slows down pretty quickly but its speed at muzzle is about 900 mph or in other words, a mile in under 4 seconds.@stevenlord782
I can't really believe anyone would think it would make a difference.
@@billbo7630 No nor me but plenty do, especially with skeet it seems.
I hate to be the guy in the comments disagreeing but when people talk about stopping the gun they're talking about lead not the pattern, think you've missed the point?
@lukedealberdi3713 No, there are two meanings to stopping the gun but yes, the other meaning is when trying to measure lead but not doing it properly. By concentrating on the target, then looking back to the barrel/bead, instead of learning how to incorporate both at the same time. In this instance however, I mean exactly how I have demonstrated, essentially not following through after taking the shot. So stopping the gun at the point of taking the shot, which some believe alters the pattern.
No, there are people out there who think gun speed can turn a round pattern into an oval. I've been told this by a few at my club. I wouldn't trust some of these guys to flip my hamburger let alone articulate a ballistic theory that would allow this to happen.
Very interesting 👌 a great video 👍👍
Thank you very much!
Love it
@knighty254 Glad you liked it.
how would balance weight at the front as my gun is stock heavy
@@mitchell_9709 Some guns accept barrel weights that are often available from the manufacturer. If it's only marginally stock heavy, I'd be tempted to keep it that way. It's generally more controllable than barrel heavy and will aid recoil.
What size choke did you use?
@jerseyrock1969 full for most, 3/4 on others. My son hit it with 1/4 and 1/2 but not so consistently. All shots in this video are mine with full choke.
I used B&p open dove shoot 7 1/2 HV.i love them me and my son daughter enjoy them my daughter limited out and this he first shoot in 12 years
A factor of pattern density. I use 24gr 8's for DTL. More pellets than 24gr 7.5's and about the same as 28gr of 7.5's without the recoil. Slightly more dense pattern.
Nothing surprising here. A mosquito flying at full speed could break a battue clay!😂
#9’s will break a target a LOT further than you would think. Usually use a 5/8 or 3/4 choke of you will break them out to 45 yards. Try it one day and have some fun during practice.
Interesting video Adam, thanks Love the B&P's I use them a lot in France but tend to default to Gamebore here Battues are thin and moving with energy so don't take much to break even at distance, agreed though in a comp don't think have the guts to go with a 9 ha ha 🤣
@MSJOnline1 Agreed mate. Gamebore are still an option and I use velocities a lot for practising but my local stockists just don't have the right selection of Gamebore for competition use for me. That's why I swapped to B&P, I have far more options available locally in a few shops and grounds, all within close proximity. For me to get my choice of Gamebore, it's an hour each way.. Only ones available locally White Gold 7.5 and they are overkill for most targets, I prefer 8s for most shots.
Good effort! Does this mean that shit size doesn’t really matter!?
It depends on the type of target and the conditions. I have been to a shoot before, where the wind speed dictated a 7.5 on a clay 20 yards away. Also I would be using 7.5s on anything over 40 yards and if it was a standard clay edge on such as a teal or a rabbit over about 30 yards.
@@BobbysGunChannel it matters, and there's no simple answer really depends on choke etc too but for me though people put too much consideration into distance and not enough on presentation and energy. A fast clay showing belly even at distance will require less 'punch' than something closer moving slow and edge on / dome in my experience.
What choke contriction?
I think there may be a difference if the gun was balanced on a thin metal rod instead of a squidgy finger.
@buckshotaaa Maybe so but we always hold the gun between our hands when shooting so as long as it only alters the balance a fraction, most probably wouldn't tell the difference.
About bloody time someone posted a vid to show us newbys how the sight picture looks instead of assuming we all know.
Great video mate where did you get those fishing weights got a browning 525 sporter!
Any good fishing tackle shop should have them. I've now adapted it further and used a long thin self tapping screw place through a thin flat bracket, that is secured by the butt pad. Make sure the weights are lead as they are easy to drill or shave to size. Check the diameter of your bolt hole before buying the weights. Different guns vary, even by the same manufacturer.
Thank you
Brilliant!
What you should see is a figure 8 some call it stack one on top of the other thank you for pointing this out there so many that don’t know or understand how important proper gun fit is I’ve seen so many kids and adults with their cheeks Bruised and bruised, badly to their cheeks bleeding just because the gun is fitted right I used to shoot trap & sporting clays my daughter used to shoot trap she was in the top 10, ATA 4 time All American I’ve been around a bit
Well explained. Everyone that now asks me to explain it to them, I’ll just send here!
Thanks very helpful..but whats a pound coin? Lol

Some great info! Miroku MK38 sporter??
Thank you and yes it was a MK38
Thanks this was great. After your video I did small geometry sketch. With shooting at 40 yards, my findings were: "the difference between "8" figure and flat rib is between 4in-5in". I agree 100% with you regarding those two shooting approaches. One more Thank you
Brilliant. Many Thanks
Happy to help, video on eye dominance will be out in a few days too.
Hi, Today I patterned the gun at around 30 yards and was amazed that I shoot right handed but am left eye dominant. Consequently the pattern was mainly to the left. Any advice would be welcomed, cheers
Pattern plates are very subjective. They don't necessarily give you the information that you want. You don't shoot a pattern plate how you shoot moving targets. They definitely won't prove your eye dominance. Cross dominance works in varying degrees and affects people in different ways. I've toyed with doing a video on the subject and your comment has made the decision easier. I'm off work next week so will make it then. Whereabouts do you live?
I'm right handed and left eye dominant, I found that I only had 2 solutions, either shoot left handed or blur the vision of my left eye with a piece of white cello tape so it couldn't focus which meant might right eye took over. It's easier to blur an eye rather than shut an eye, it lets more light into your vision with both eyes open and you also have x amount of peripheral vision
I'm the same (right handed but left eye dominant) The only way I can shoot (if I want to hit anything) is by taping over the left lens of my shooting glasses, meaning my right eye takes over.
Not entirely sure why it’s taken me two days of breaks to find this specific information but here we are. A thank you is in order. I’ve subscribed.
Thanks for the tip !
Is this Lea Marston?
Yes
Awesome video explained alot.!!
Is that all there is to it!? Almost every video i watch goes on about gun 'fit', didnt realise it was this easy to work out!
No, there is more to a proper gun fit but this is the view you should have, when looking down the rib. A proper gun fit will also look at length of pull etc, which includes the angle of your arm in relation to the stock. I'd recommend looking at Ben Husthwaite's videos on it. Nobody does it better.
I've balanced all of my O/U shotguns by taping a small plastic bag to the top of the recoil pad. I then hold the shotgun under the pivot pin & add weight to the plastic bag, until the gun balances on the pivot pin. I've used small round lead fishing weights, or OO buck shot. I then remove the recoil pad, fill most of the bolt tube with bubble wrap, roll up the weight filled baggy, push it into the back end of the bolt tube & replace the recoil pad. The guns are no longer nose heavy, it handle better & has a little less recoil with the added weight.
Ahhh. Thank you!
My Browning 725 came with a pro balancing kit included. It consists of a threaded rod and 6 weights that can be installed and tightened down with a Nylock nut toward the rear of the stock maximizing the additional weights. I think the kit adds up to 8oz to the rear of the gun, (i installed 2 weights). I bought the gun just a year old and the initial owner sold it with the system included. It's a good piece of kit, mind you. it ought to be for £85.😲
Normally I shoot slugs like that 1:33 and the grouping is always dead center...
this setup applies for trap only or for skeet and sporting? thank you.
This is for the vast majority and is considered normal for all disciplines. Some people choose to have it set slightly differently though. A minority like to see even more rib.
Great Help 👍🏻
About time someone made a video with this viewpoint, awesome!!
I assume this is something you wanna do before you purchase a gun no?
Absolutely, if the gun is low in the comb, then you can have an adjustable comb fitted. If it's too high, it will need a gunsmith to take some wood off, not really an ideal option and you'd be better looking for an alternative that is nearer your dimensions. As a general rule but not completely, you get guns that are either a Beretta or a Browning type fit. Berettas and indeed a lot of Italian guns are generally lower.
