Time ATAC Wars - Old V New - including Titanium dissection!
Inspired by TH-cam Engineer Hambini, I put this explanation together about the modern Time ATAC pedal range and comparing the internals to what Hambini showed in his video from the original ATAC. Hopefully another video to follow that justifies why the new one is better, not just lighter!

Hi, great video, I have decided to replace my old good Time pedals (same as green ones shown in your video) with lighter and new Time XC. I have not installed the yet as I have noticed that there is a very small play in spindle - when I grab pedal body and spindle and move it up/down, I can feel a play, maybe about half a millimeter in each pedal. Is this normal with brand new Times? My old ones got some play but they are 15 years old so I suppose this is normal and I am not sure if new ones I got, Time XC, are faulty or not. Could you advise please? Thank you

@@funLad80 Hi there - first port of call is to tighten the outside cap which holds the bearing in place. I mentioned it in this video. However to do that is tricky without the right pin spanner tool. If you don’t have the tool - try two darts/nails and gripping them both with a spanner.

@@barrasgs393hi, Thank you for your answer. I have watched your video and have tried to tighten that cap but it won’t move so I think it is good. I have ordered c-ring pliers and will try to do it using pliers, but don’t want to damage it/make marks in cap cause they are brand new and I can still replace/return them. So you are saying that new pedals should not have any play in spindle at all?

@@funLad80 if it is truly loose - and the cap is tight then that is very odd. If it is movable but can’t ‘rattle’ then it is probably just the play in the system. It only has 1 bearing and would not spin properly if the bushing was tight.

@@barrasgs393I got the pliers today and will try to tighten caps tomorrow. I have tried doing this with Allen key only but I doubt new pedals would have loose caps. Anyway I will try tomorrow and will let you know It is very minimal play, I would say maybe half a milimetre max. I am just worried that it may get worse if brand new pedals already got slight play in spindle

The pricing for the 'upgrades' is outrageous

Amen. Time have just rejigged their range and got rid of the XC2 and XC4. They have also rebranded the XC8 to XC10. Maybe to try and justify the price. Interestingly the new springs are rainbow effect and may be titanium…..

I still use my Sierra pedals from the 90’s, Atac cleats are more or less compatible but the original cleats with the Sierra shoes are much easier to clip and unclip but unavailable nowadays. I also use the Atac pedals, but imo the Sierra’s where superior!

Thanks for posting Bob! Great to hear of a Sierra user. Do you recall what year you got them and which shoes you used? Were you aware of the Peak model? My suspicion is that the Peak was the ‘Carbon’ version, but I’m looking for some Corroboration. Cheers, Ben

Just serviced some first version Time ATAC. It was quite easy to replace the bearing. Great informative content

Good stuff! As long as the arms & bodies are in reasonable shape, you'll get another 25 years out of them!
