The One Who Lived - Robin Nest 2022
In July of 2022 we had a pair of American Robins build a nest in our front yard. 3 eggs were laid and hatched, but only 1 of them went on to fledge from the nest.
Prior to this nest, we had another Robin nest in our yard which did not have a happy ending for any of the nestlings... th-cam.com/video/uji-k0YxqMs/w-d-xo.html

    This is my first year to have catbirds in the yard. They are not shy at all. They always keep an eye on me and follow me around when I work in the yard. They know that when I water the plants, the worms come up and they like that. I didn't didn't know that they've built a nest in the dogwood bush until I tried to trim it. One of the pair landed beside me and screamed. Haha! Startled me half to death. I hope they successfully rear their babies out of that bush this summer.

    That’s so sad. 😞 I had a song sparrow build a nest on the wreath on my front door & laid 4 eggs. I watched her sit for 10 days, so I grew attached. This AM, I heard a thump on my front door, ran to it in time to see that a hawk had destroyed the nest & killed the unborn babies. Most horrific thing I’ve ever seen. Awful

    Ive got a Robin the second year in a row with a nest in my flood light on the back patio. My half bathroom window looks directly out on it about 18inches away. I love it and feel very lucky. She/babies are very protected but Crows worry me. Last year all went well and 3 out of the 4 babies made it. One fell out very early on and perished.

      I've seen the flood light nest on my neighbors house, too funny. Must be a configuration they really like. Every fledgling that makes it is a little miracle. Hopefully all goes well with this nest too!

    This just happened to the nest we had in our pine tree. My husband found one of the babies that had "fallen out" of the nest, put it back and both parent continued to feed all three. It wasn’t long before he saw crow at the top of the tree and realized it probably attempted to take the baby but dropped it. He put out some props hoping to discourage the crow, but by the time he went back outside (about 45 min later), all 3 were missing including an egg that never hatched. Mom and dad seemed confused as these parents were. I know it's mother natures way, but hard for this human who feels badly for them. It was a gift being able to enjoy watching them while we could.

    aA couple weeks ago a Robin built a nest in a tree right out from our kitchen window, it laid at least one egg but one day a crow or raven flew into the tree right above the nest I opened window it flew off as far as I know it didn't return but niether did the parent a few days later I found a broken shell below the nest. I haven't seen the Robin again. 😞 I looked up their nesting habits and apparently they only use the nest once but can brood up to three times a year each time building a new nest in a diifferent area...better luck next time I guess.

    I wish robins were a little bit better at taking the dead birds strewn through the prospective nesting tree as the type of bad sign it so often is 😢 I had this great family of robins back in April, and ohhhh those babies ❤ my little boy was SO happy. But it was not safe, and there were clear signs of many that died there already by then. All thanks to neighbors getting cats just to shut them outside constantly. These cats didn't even like it outside, they run in other people's houses as they're trying to take groceries inside. One has become extremely aggressive towards other people's pets, because he's so afraid cuz of the wild animals that have attacked him. And that's all it takes to make a lovely nest tree into a baby bird deathtrap- one irresponsible family nearby, making bad decisions that affect everyone. I never thought my fluffy, mushy heart become so hardened so quickly that I'd be able to look at stuff like this & say "well, at least the crows are supposed to be there"

      @@BackyardBeautyNH I had a mother bird nesting my one of my eavestrough downpipes. I never saw chicks, the parents were not bringing food. She had been sitting on her nest for about 10 days, so I presume there were eggs. The other day my mom remarked that the mother bird was standing on the edge of her nest. The next day we found the nest fallen onto the ground. No eggs, no sign of any disturbance inside the nest (like we see the nest being torn apart in your video by everyone, including mother bird), but the nest at my house was perfectly tidy inside, aside from the fact that it had fallen to the ground. We found that mother bird had mudded the nest to the wall, but none on the bottom, so it wasn't very stable. We had a robin nest there last year, and you can still see the mud stains on the downpipe, because she had mudded her nest onto the pipe very well, as opposed to this new nest that had no mudding onto the pipe. We are wondering if momma bird abandoned the nest because something took her eggs, or if she abandoned the nest because there were no eggs and the nest fell because she was standing on the edge and hadn't mudded it down very well.🤷‍♀️ We are so sad, we were hoping to see robin babies in our garden again.😥

    • @BackyardBeautyNH
      @BackyardBeautyNH ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no 😞 Sorry to hear about your nest. Typically Robins will incubate for 12-14 days. So it's possible they hatched and something might have grabbed them off the ground before you saw it. I'm working on another Robin video from last year where a similar thing happened, nest was unstable and fell out of the tree. Fortunately we were able to reinforce it and the last nestling that hadn’t fallen, grew up and fledged successfully. I was shocked to see the crow on the video but was slightly comforted by at least knowing what happened. Have also seen nests just fail and have no idea what happened. Here’s to hoping your Robins have better luck this year.
