Here, I take a little look back at the transistor radio. It would seem that the radio has been surpassed by more modern means of consuming music and information, such as the smartphone and streaming. I look at a few transistor radios in my own collection from the heyday of the transistor set, and reflect on the good old days of radio.

In this video, we look at the classic Bush TR130 series of radios, by looking at some of the radios in my own collection. Originally designed by Tom Karen of Ogle Design in the UK, who also designed the iconic Raleigh Chopper. The first radio was introduced in 1965, a classic design aimed at the teenage market in the mid-1960s. The last original Bush radio of this design was produced in 1974. W...

We start this video by looking at the first 1990s Revival radios and then look back at some vintage Roberts radios from the 1950s and 1960s, on which the Revival series was based. The Revival radio came into being after a TV advertisement for Martini in 1989. In the background of this a...

Then there was Dynatron.
Absolutely! I have a Dynotron TP11 in my collection. Its design bears all the hallmarks of the Hacker brothers. I believe they left Dynotron in the same year it was released 1959.
Thanks for showing Roberts Radios, I liked the R260 you displayed, so have been looking for a new one and found a company with one in stock, it’s a excellent radio to add to my collection of Sony AM / FM radios, not into DAB radios, thanks for showing your collection Roberts Radios in another of your videos.
Hello, thank you for watching and taking an interest in my Roberts radio videos. I appreciate people who take the time to comment and share their interest. Yes, the R260 is a brilliant, brand-new off the shelf vintage radio and the end of an era. I hope you enjoy your own set! I too appreciate Sony, I have a few of their compact transistor sets in my collection, including a little Sony ICF- M260 which I'm listening to now. Cheers🍻

Tenho mais de 25 do Aliexpress, porém so compro com movimento seiko ou citizen (miyota); São com a mesma quantidade Seiko ou Citizen por o valor 10 vezes menos
The radio did not operate on independent 9 v batteries for AM and FM. The whole circuit operated on 18volts. There was a power input on the side for this voltage. Lovely condition radio's.
Hello, thank you for your input and correction! I'm not very knowledgeable about circuitry. I thought there were two independent circuits for FM and AM, is this correct even if they were both powered by the two batteries at 18 volts? I do know Hacker radios were well-engineered and built with no shortcuts. Thanks for watching and commenting on my radios. Cheers🍻
Never seen that model with Long Wave/Medium Wave and an aerial socket running off electric ....... is it original or a recent upgrade .🤔🤔🤔
Hello. Yes, it is original except for the back panel and power lead. The panel came off the later Bush TR82. The Bush MB60 was first introduced in 1957 - 59 and came with a car aerial socket in the back. With motoring taking off in the 1950s and the MB60 being a portable set, having an external car aerial socket would have helped with sales. I have since purchased another MB60, which is all original, including a rare mains lead. The original MB60 used miniature valves and was a mains/battery set. The later TR82 used transistors and was powered by a PP9 battery only. FM came on the VTR103 sets in 1961. The Bush TR82 was recreated in 1997 and produced for many years, being sold by Argos, this model had FM, MW, and LW. They even made a DAB version. A radio that traveled through the decades. Cheers🍻
I had a mark one back in the 70s, my mum bought it off the Grattan catalogue for £50, she payed a pound a week for fifty weeks, same as the one in the video but the original.
Hello. It's the same as me. My MK1 came from my mum's Kays catalogue on the never-never. They were very expensive. We were lucky to have one. Happy memories. Cheers🍻
Superb condition and very informative video.
Thank you again for your kind comments! Yes, I'm pleased to own these early little transistor radios. They are easier to collect and display, and I love the designs. They have survived well compared to my little black Hong Kong made set. Cheers🍻
Great Roberts history video. One small point: at 37:20 on the red R200 you show the AF117 transistors. I'm thinking that the transistor between the I.F. cans is an AF117 replacement. It looks non original to me, possibly a silicon type or Russian germanium GT322A or 322B. I believe there should be 3 AF117's in this circuit.
Thank you for watching and commenting on another of my Radio videos! I didn't spot the AF117 transistor replacement on my red R200, thank you for pointing it out. That would explain why it still works. I purchased it from a dealer. Cheers🍻
Thank you, great video. You are making me feel guilty about selling all my old Bush radio's on eBay.
Hello, thank you for your kind comments and for watching. A shame you are selling off all your Bush radios. I'm tripping over them here, and my wife wants me to sell them. Is the reason due to the lack of stations on AM?
Stunning.
Thank you! 🍻
@@radiowyn1703 I just ordered a space blue one. :)
@@BigDuke6ixx Congratulations! If it is anything like mine, you won't be disappointed. The Space Blue looks good in the photos, I bet that colour will pop in the sunshine. Enjoy!
Such a fab radio! It has a very nice sound and really clear reception 👍
Hello and thank you! Yes, I love the sound quality and the large illuminated tuning dial. A true classic. Sadly, we have fewer stations to tune into these days. Cheers🍻
It’s looks better with the higher sissy bar. My mate has just brought a limited edition 2024 Raleigh Chopper in metallic blue. He changed the sissy bar to a really higher one, bigger than yours, It looks so much better now. Yours is a lovely original colour scheme chopper. Love it. It’s mint man. In the 80,s I had my brothers hand me down Raleigh chopper tall frame in Yellow a Mk1. Thank you also xx
Hi, thank you for watching and sharing your story! Good to hear from you. Yes, they look so much better with the higher sissy bar, and they don't look right with the supplied bar. I managed to get mine from Raleigh, but they stopped selling them. I hope your mate is enjoying his new bike. I bet you wished you still had your tall frame MK1, I miss my original MK1 bike, so many happy memories were made on these old bikes. Cheers🍻
Nice! have you had any quality issues with it? I saw a Raleigh Copper in 1971 when I lived in New Zealand. Wow it looked amazing but I was never lucky enough to own one. I now live in Australia and have taken the risk of buying a UK second hand still in the box (first batch) red model and ship it out to Australia. Fingers crossed I will have no quality issues with it as I understand Raleigh have stopped making parts for it already. Not sure what Raleigh are up to.
Hello and thank you! Regarding quality, I have had no issues with mine, but I haven't used it, I have it on display only, and it ticks that box of having a brand new bike again. The main problem with the first batch was the finish on the wheel rims at the weld. I was lucky, although not perfect, but in some of the images on Facebook, there were some really bad ones. Regards the rest of the bike I was very impressed, especially with the frame and paint quality. Super that you are getting one and I'm sure you will enjoy it, the attention to detail by Raleigh and the Chopper enthusiasts that helped them is amazing. I don't understand why Raleigh didn't make it available in other countries, or continue with the parts supply. I have an original MK1, the model I had back in 1971 in Brilliant Orange, and a MK2, both unrestored. Thank you for commenting, and enjoy your new bike, nothing like them! Let me know how you go on. Cheers.
@@radiowyn1703 Thank you for the info about the wheel rims at the weld. I'm not sure where the wheel rims are welded but guessing if there is a fault I will see it. I will check this out when my Chopper arrives and will be crossing my fingers.
@@radiowyn1703 It arrived in Australia undamaged which is great. Unfortunately both wheels do have the poor weld joins which is a shame but I guess it's only cosmetic. The pedals arms I thought were finished a little rough also. On the plus side the paintwork is great. Still love it
@@gregpetterson Great! You must have the only one in Australia. Regarding the wheels, most have poor finishes on the weld joints. The main thing is that the weld is sound. I have seen posts on Facebook where some owners have had them re-chromed, and they come out perfect. This shouldn't be the case though, but to have a brand new Raleigh Chopper in 2023/24 I can live with it. There is a MKIV group on Facebook, two well-known Chopper enthusiasts who helped Raleigh develop the bike post on it. I recommend it. Are you going to use it? Check the chainguard fixing screws, some were loose. Enjoy your brand new classic! Just in time for your summer. Cheers.
@@radiowyn1703 Thanks for this info, good to know the welds are sound. I have joined the MKIV group on Facebook and checked the chainguard screws. The screws were good. Yes I will be using it and my Kids who are in there 20's have never seen Choppers before love it. It was like going back to the past seeing them ride up and down the street having fun just like the old days. New fans in the making.
Awesome Comparison Video. I actaully found out about the Seiko presage after buying the Pagani lol its a big watch but it wears well and that dial is breathtaking. i own several Paganis they make some nice Homage pieces..I like that they have started making original Designs too

Hiya always loved radio ! Why is it the quality is so crap these days !! Hardly any bass & treble. High end specs with every features superb as they are they are b let down by amp & speakers. What mske do you recommend that actually have a bass & treble ? Back in the we did nt have the digital / Wi-Fi but the sound if you reception even mw was fab ! Down to the quality of the actual radio. Have we really advanced ?
Hi, yes, my radio is my best friend in the house. I don't think they will ever produce a radio as well made as the old Hacker sets these days. Regarding a modern radio, I have a Philips ORT7500/10 which sounds quite good. Now discontinued, but you might get one online. Roberts Radio in the UK still produces some good sounding portable radios, but I'm not keen on DAB, prefer FM. We may have advanced but we have lost a lot on the way. Cheers!
@@radiowyn1703 what I meant to say was there is no bass or treble adjustment in most radios …
@@TheAtticradio Yes, they seem to omit that option or have 3 or 4 preset EQ sound settings.

They used to sell those in the UK through Argos, but are now discontinued. They also made a DAB version. The reproduction sets came out in 1997 as a limited production run with a certificate but continued in production for many years. They work well and look very similar to the 1960s original. Enjoy!

Hi, I didn't realise that they are still making reproductions of the Bush TR82, especially with Bluetooth. I have the UK reproduction sets from the early 2000s sold here through Argos with DAB, FM, MW, and LW, but no Bluetooth Amazing this design is still being produced, originally released as the Bush MB60 in 1957. They are a true classic. Enjoy your new radio! Cheers.

Had to watch your vid again just found a 606 mb for sale in v good condition and succumbed to the Roberts magic thanks for the info oh don't worry about the wife women don't always understand the needs of men
Brilliant! I'm sure you will enjoy your new Roberts R606MB. I hope you have all the aluminum caps on the knobs, or you might end up like me with 7 sets🤣. I get away with a lot, but for some reason, she picks on my R606 radios. Cheers!
They were too big there were too bulky and you couldn't get stereo. It fell off the mental piece one time too many and that was it.
Sorry to hear about the demise of your R606. Yes, compared to some vintage sets they are large, but I prefer the look and sound of the R606, including the wooden cabinets. The little 'Roberts Rambler' sets take up less space, but the sound isn't as good. I know Roberts now produce stereo radios with a vintage look. Cheers!
Both my Mom and grandmothers had the radio going all the time to ether KWIX or KRES in the 70's to the 2000's. As you said, radio was a friend, trusted and true. For my Mom, that stopped back in June 2024 when Alpha Media fired all the staff of those 2 stations and had AI run the show. They also lost a lot of local advertisers to KWWR, KMZU, and the stations out of Columbia. 😁
Like most of us of a certain generation, our radios are our best friend. Even if I’m not listening, I like the radio switched on in the background. It is quite alarming to think that AI could replace a DJ and the staff of a radio station. Nothing can replace a good DJ. Hopefully, they soon realise and return to real people entertaining a real audience. Thank you for watching and sharing this point! Cheers.
Nice video I have one of the roberts R800's in bright red but it runs on the big cubic 9v battery which is impossible to find here in France we can get D's c's and AA 's how could I convert mine to run on available batteries yes I can plug into the mains but it sounds better on batteries any advice would be appreciated unfortunately living in the sticks we don't have anything resembling maplins or the like
Can I suggest ebay. There is an adapter set you can purchase to transfer the 9v to six AA which is sold online. I think they even wrap the adapter in an 70's Ever Ready wrapper ;)
Thanks a lot
Thank you for watching and for your kind comments! The R800 is a great radio. Check item number '115494897430' on eBay, this is a UK supplier that sells replica Ever Ready PP9 battery adaptors that use 6 AA cells, I have one of these. If you are not concerned with originality, you can also wire into your radio a '6 AA battery holder' which makes up the 9V required, there are plenty of these on eBay for around £3.00. Cheers!
I sold loads of these back in the day but it was a bit outclassed by its bigger brother the R707. Both great radios! I had one for years, eventually got fed up with buying the two huge batteries it took, so rewired it to work from a spare power supply I sort of 'borrowed' from work - just to test it, of course! :)
I hope you still have the R707 ;)
Yes, the R707 outclassed the R606 in performance, I agree. Can you remember the price comparison between the two radios? Interesting, that you sold these Robert radios. They must have sold well given the amount still available. Sadly, time has proved that the R606 is a better radio for longevity. The R707 suffers from “tin whiskers” in the transistors and requires the module to be removed to replace them, which isn’t an easy process. I sent my R707 away to have the offending transistors replaced, and now it is an outstanding performer! Thank you for sharing this! Cheers.
An absolute classic, well designed and made unlike modern equipment, thanks as ever for posting.
Yes, they are one of the best! Never to be repeated in these modern times. Thank you for tuning in again and commenting. Cheers👍
Another great video. I couldn't agree more - these radios easily outperform modern DAB portables. DAB is such a let down. Thank you for the time spent on this video.
Hi, thank you so much for watching another of my videos and for your kind comments. I enjoy making these videos and appreciate people like yourself taking the time to comment and share in this great hobby. I find the worst thing about DAB radio is the station tuning. Nothing like a classic Roberts radio where you can be listening to your favourite station in seconds. Cheers🍻

Sometimes the DAB signal is ok (but rarely excellent) and other times it's very poor. to the point its best to turn off the radio. The lag to turn it on and retune is also a pain. The batteries are quick to be used so portability has never been ideal. The only advantage is the wide range of stations but perhaps most people still only listen to to a small number of stations. I miss 4Extra on my older radios but that's it. Even Radio 5 sounds good on a decent Roberts set. 'm not sure that a decent FM / MW set will ever be outperformed but they are probably very expensive to make compared to the modern DAB. I wonder if in 50 years anyone will be filming a video talking about the performance of a DAB set - I suspect not.
@@andy84251 Yes, the tuning, powering up, and battery consumption of DAB radio is a big negative. It's a shame we couldn't have 4Extra on FM, some great old comedy shows, which would sound much better coming from a vintage set. With more station choices on DAB comes less quality in output, much like digital TV and Freeview. Back in the day with only 3 TV channels, there was always something to watch. You are OK these days if you like watching cooking programmes. I would think most modern DAB radios will have been skipped by the time 50 years have passed. The old Roberts sets were made to last with wooden cabinets and designed to be repaired with easy access to circuits, and a good spare parts supply. Enjoy your vintage radios. As long as we have some good radio stations on FM, we are OK. Cheers🍻
@@radiowyn1703 Absolutely!
Hard to compare the Pagani to the Seiko. I am a bit of a Seiko fanfoy. I have 17. But, for the money, I'd take the Pagani. I've no fear on the Seagull movements. They make a fine movement. There are several watch repair guys on youtube tearing them down and remarking they are ok. I love Aliexpress, zero issues if you have an issue. They will work with you to resolve anything that happens. I am down to only 8 AE watches (out of 40) My wife has 7 (out of 20) I married a watch person. Cheers!!!
The Seiko definitely has the edge on the Pagani, but if I had discovered AliExpress before I bought it, I would have saved enough money to buy a San Martin to go along with the Pagani. I have 4 Seiko watches, including my old favourite Seiko 5. I'm already up to 11 AliExpress watches. Good to have a wife that appreciates a good watch. Enjoy your watches and thank you for sharing your watch journey. Cheers 🍻.
Similar position, not sure about Ali express.
Hi, I now have 10 watches from AliExpress and am very happy with my experience. I have another video where I explain a little more, I too had doubts, but not now. Cheers.
Bargain!!!
Yes, I'm so pleased with it. Thank you for watching! 🍻
How long did it take to arrive. What's your experience so far when it comes to ordering from Aliexpress. Thanks
Hello, I now have 10 watches purchased from AliExpress in my collection. They arrived in the UK within one week after ordering, bar one, which was hit with a customs charge due to the watch price being over £135. That one took about 10 days after being delayed by UK customs. They have all been dispatched shortly after ordering with full tracking on the AliExpress website. I have found AliExpress to be easy to use. I was initially reluctant to buy from them, but I tested the water with a cheap watch, the one you see in this video, and so far I have no issues with AliExpress, and I am very pleased with my purchases. I did return one watch, which went to a UK depot and a refund was issued in 3 days. Cheers👍
I have built up an 8 watch collection over the past year and I could not be happier with them. I suspect that, like many, my first Aliexpress special was bought as a "place holder" for an Explorer. Others followed BB, GMT, Sub, Speedy and even a £14 Celebration. I have been extremely surprised that my (<£500 collection) has completely satisfied my lust for watches and I am not remotely interested in buying the real thing. I suspect that collectors like you and I obtain more joy from our watches than those who spend the big bucks on Swiss items.
It would seem, that many of us have taken the plunge into the AliExpress watch market, with no regrets, and with a very positive experience. I doubt I would ever be in a place to buy a Rolex or any other quality Swiss brand. If I were, given my working-class roots and the need to get the most out of my pound, I would probably buy a San Martin, a classic car, and use any other money saved to treat my wife to an expensive meal, where I could show off my new San Martin watch and classic car. The hardest part with AliExpress is resisting that buy button. Enjoy your watches! Why have one Rolex, when you can have a change of watch for each and every day of the year. Cheers🍻.
That is in really good condition for the age. There is one on a well known auction site at the moment which someone received as a 40 year long service award back in 1959. Do you know the model number of the other "Personic" model in the brochure?
Hello and thank you! Yes, by being preserved in a box and kept away from sunlight the radio still has that new look and feel. My Philips brochure doesn't list a model number for the Personic, but I looked at the online Radio Museum and it is recorded as being model number 'L1G75T'. Both radios date to 1959 having Mullard OC transistors. According to the brochure the Personic came with either a black or blue case and aluminium speaker grille. Thank you for watching! Cheers👍
I'm sure the original gentleman who received the radio you mentioned for sale online, received after 40 years of service with the same company, would have been very pleased to have been gifted with a modern transistor radio set in 1959. He started work with the company in 1919, the dawn of radio broadcasting in the UK. The radio looks in good condition in red and grey with a gold coloured speaker grille, as listed in my brochure. Just two colours blue or red.
Lovely bike
Thank you👍
Interesting collection , looks like you have been hooked , and no divers yet !
Hi, thank you for watching! Yes, I'm well hooked. No divers as yet, but I already have a couple of Invicta Pro Divers in my collection. I'm waiting for a good sale to pick up a San Martin. Cheers🍻
Absolutely gorgeous! Love your collection and your appreciation too. Bravo!
Hello, that's very kind of you, thank you! I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment and feedback🍻
Well done. Great to see you indulging another hobby 😊
Thank you! I'm very happy with my AliExpress journey so far. After watching your video, I have just ordered a Pagani PD1782. Great review. Cheers👍
You selected several of the cooler and more desirable mechanical timepieces in your collection. The low cost quartz ani-digital is a fine daily beater. After I discovered Pagani Design, and then AliExpress.....I now have 17 Pagani Design models, 2 Seestern, 2 AddiesDive, 3 SteelDive, 4 Tandorio, 2 Benyar, 2 high end LIGE divers, and a number of Panerai homages, and low-priced quartz watches. It's either good or bad for a Watch Nerd or collection. :) I had my original watch collection stolen by my ex-wife during the divorce. She was a psychopathic criminal. I lost my Swiss watches, and was left with the Seiko Black Monster that was on my wrist at the time. It took 10 years to get over it and to begin to wear a watch on my wrist again, when my mother passed away and I had to return 'home'. That Seiko rekindled a spark in me. I forgot how much I liked that watch and it ran perfectly after sitting for a decade. Soon after that is when I discovered Pagani Design in the beginning of this year. I was stunned by the level of workmanship and quality. The rest as they say, is history.
I have several watches off AliExpress. I might stay away from Pagani, there QC is likely the worst of the main homage brands. I’ve had to return several because the crowns didn’t work, or didn’t work for long. I’ve got a V2 of an Explorer II homage, and the enamel on the bezel came off easily. It’s the last 42mm size they, or anyone else, makes of this homage. I tried repeatedly to get a new bezel, either warranty or just buy one. On AliExpress they said they’d send a replacement for a $1, but then the order got canceled and they stopped answering me. On Pagani’s website, they answered, slowly, and over the course of a week or 2, I was eventually told they couldn’t send a replacement. I’ve been much happier with Addiesdive and Steeldive, along with Watchdives. And San Martin gets really good reviews, though I don’t have one yet.
If you could provide the AliExpress links, that would be lovely. Thank you
Hello, thank you for watching. I have now added all the watch model numbers to my video description box. Please copy and paste them into the AliExpress search box. Cheers🍻
Great to see watches that aren't necessarily trying to be cheap copies of European watches & aren't afraid to display their own chinese heritage.
Yes, they do hold their own. The quality of the finish is also excellent. I soon got over any concerns I had after my first watch. It seems like myself, more people are catching onto them.
A nice looking collection! I agree with you about the fact that buying watches from AliExpress adds a lot of value to a watch collection. I have 4 watches from AliExpress out of a collection of 10. I have a few Casios and recently I bought my first swiss watch at a very good bargain on the secondary market. My suggestion is that you shouldn't have all of your watch from only one place. I personally like variety and there is value in other places as well.
Thank you! I agree, most of my collection is made up of used vintage watches, an affordable way to own Swiss. I have had a few new Seikos and 1 Citizen. I recently purchased a couple of Invicta Pro Divers, and now have quite a collection from AliExpress. I also love Casios, a fun watch, and have quite a few, another cheap way into watch collecting. Cheers🍻
