It was at least a half hour long and I would rate Newport's extravaganza from the harbour a B+. Some might say even better, but I am not a young person and have seen a lot of fireworks. Cypress St was a great vantage point, with a carnival type atmosphere. The property owners were very gracious hosts, I must say, as throngs of visitors invaded the area! Well done mates...

I've helped sand blast & paint this bridge several years ago and got to know it's architecture extensively. Sometimes the elevator in the towers worked, sometimes it didn't. A walk up to the top deck by way of the main support cable can be exhausting... the stairs/ladders were worse. Many lives were enriched in it's construction and painting, some lost... Where the steel metts the concrete are 'rocker arms'. These are meant to roll or 'rock' as the bridge expands and contracts with temperature fluctuations. The name was changed from the 'Newport Bridge' to the 'Claiborne Pell' bridge. 5:49

After decommissioning in April 1991, she was transferred to the United States Navy. As USNS Hiddensee (185NS9201), the ship was extensively evaluated at the Naval Air Warfare Center at Solomons, Maryland, and used for naval exercises. Following naval budget cuts, the ship was removed from service in April 1996, and joined the Battleship Cove fleet on 14 June 1997. I used to live in Solomons during this time and I would see the Hiddensee tied up to the pier on the Calvert County side of the Patuxent River. Strange seeing a Soviet Union corvette tied up to the dock of a US Navy base!

"USS Percival" looks an awful lot like a Soviet Corvette.
