Electric Cafe's Song Rating System:
9-10 - Classic
8 - Excellent
7 - Very Good
6 - Good
5 - Pretty Good
4- Ok
3 - Not very good or subpar
2 - Bad
1 - Crap
0 - Complete Shit
Electric Cafe's Album rating system:
90-100: Legendary status (Its a classic regardless of the genre / You even buy it for someone else)
80-89: Excellent / A genre classic. (An excellent complete album in so many ways. Hard to fault much here if anything. The kind of album you let someone borrow but make sure they give it back)
70-79: Very Good (U don't mind having this on multiple formats. The album has some really excellent songs. It can still have some flaws or a few average tracks)
60-69: Good. (Most are good songs and perhaps a few excellent tracks but then there are some not so good moments possibly)
50-59: Pretty Good (Very close to saying its a good album. I feel like the difference of Ok and Good needs an in-between rating).
40-49: OK (You are a completist on collecting so you might pick it up for a decent price. You might almost like half of the tracks. The other half is below average.)
30-39 - Not very good or below average for the group. (Its mostly in the below average to ok range)
20-29: Bad / Just not my thing or NR (Bad or NR for music that I do not want to score)
11-19: Crap
1-10: Complete shit (The kind of music you immediately want to turn off)

    I love this album, this is how I discovered older Black Dog with. I honestly don't understand how it seems to be overlooked, even by TBD fans. They mention Bytes & Spanners all the time, but not this one or the great Book of Dogma compilation (which is actually often my go-to-listen for older electronics) Mango is life. In seriousness, the siliness of it sticks to me. It would fit very well in a silly/funny video or ad.

      Hey, not sure if you saw my scoring system but 62/100 is considered 'Good which is 60-69. I use a wider range to allow more room inside them for a lot of albums to be rated and ranked. (See note section). I hear you though. There is some of OMD "catchiness' or pop sound that I probably underappreciate. I don't find their albums very consistent although I like a lot of their songs. But generally, I always like about 50% to 75% of their albums. 25% - 50% brings it down to about good for me on average. I rated Organization a 70/100. I haven't done Dazzle Ships but I imagine that ones going to be in the 78-83 range. Probably my favorite. What do you think I'm specifically missing? Do you feel that you are being subjective on the weaker tracks? Thanks for the comment! Its just an opinion :)

    While intelligent meaningful lyrics don't normally increase my interest in a record, bad annoying lyrics can screw everything instantly, no matter how much I may be into the melody and the vocals. This is what happened to some popular songs I still can't believe were big hits. Take for example Funkytown by Lipps Inc. or Don't You Want Me by Human League. Well done musically but a stupid annoying anticlimactic refrain ruins it all. And I still can't get over the cheesiness of ballads like My Heart Will Go On. "Love was when I loved you..." Come on now!

I really enjoyed listening to you, and I’m sure your TH-cam channel will grow and find success! You know, for me, music is a powerful feeling that’s hard to put into words. But you have a talent for talking about music. So don’t stop! And oh wow, you have the first Greyscale CD releases! That’s incredible! And the CD collection behind you is impressive! It would be really interesting to hear about your journey as a collector and what the CD format means to you. Judging by the size of your collection, CDs clearly hold a special place for you. Maybe there will be a video about that someday? :) Rima

      Thank you Rima! I have been a big follower of the dub techno genre since the late 90s and all the way through the cologne sound of the early 2000s. I was a fan of your husband before I started working with you both. before he started Greyscale or Redscale. I have around 10,000 cds and about 10,000 vinyl. Around 1,000 cassettes also. I love your idea of doing a format video and what they mean to me and my history with them. That's a great idea! My 2nd bedroom is the room I do my videos in and that's my CD room. My vinyl is in the living room as they take up more space. lol Keep up the great work with your photography. Someday, it would be great to blow up your pictures to a bigger size for walls. Ever thought of having a photography showing/exhibit of your work? It would be great. You know Alex would have the music for it ;) Thank you for the kind words Rima and thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your label.

    Toyah was in British Film Director: Derek Jarman’s Film: Jubilee, which in the UK Is regarded as one of the leading influential Punk Genre Films. From the early 1980s, she had a very successful music career as part of the British Punk-Pop/ New Wave. Like the British music artist: Hazel ‘O’ Connor, Toyah was a very dramatic music artist, where there was a very creative indie-approach to how her music videos were made. Like Kate Bush, Toyah had a very unique vision in her visual presence as a music artist, and how she came across visually in her music videos. She later on in her career married the rock musician Robert Fripp ( King Crimson). She now makes singles and albums independently with Robert. One of her recent album releases ( about 2 years ago) was the studio album : Posh Pop, where she returned to her Pop roots as a music artist, in which she had seriously not made a studio album like that for over two decades. The album was an incredible return to form for her. Well worth checking out.

    I don't believe you are being fair in reviewing this particular album. Personally, I think your review is generally how many Americans view this kind of particular brand of British Pop music. You also need to understand the time period this particular album was created and recorded. Siobhan Fahey had an ENORMOUS amount to prove with her solo debut album project. She had just left Bananarama, who are considered the most popular Girls group (EVER), with the highest number of charted music singles by a girl's group, not just in the United Kingdom, but all over the world as well. Even though Bananarama had garnered this incredible success, the British music and tabloid press had just seen these 3 girls as, girls with no singing talent, who danced around erratically in their music videos and joked around when giving their serious promotion music interviews. Siobhan left the group, because she did not like the direction the group were heading to, especially in the work they were doing with Stock, Aitken and Waterman. She preferred the earlier material they had been doing with producers Jolley and Swain. She was having more interest in a darker indie music, like The Jesus and Mary Chain. She was married to Dave Stewart at the time, who was the person who was really putting Shakespeare Sister together. The group had mainly been created as a Solo Music venture for Siobhan Fahey. Marcella Detroit was later recruited in to join the group. So when the album was eventually released, it was like Siobhan Fahey sticking two fingers up to ALL her doubters, who considered that she virtually had no talent. Let me tell you, that in the UK, Shakespears Sister were getting the most respect, possibly more than any other British Pop Group at the time. Especially, as we are talking about a group headed by 2 women here, which in UK music, was still very rare at the time....well rare in terms of the enormous success that Shakespeare Sister garnered with their debut album. The song 'Your History' with the music video, directed by Sophie Muller, got enormous respect in the British music industry. As far as I am concerned, (compared to other British Pop Music) in that time period, The Sacred Heart album stands heads and shoulders above ANY OTHER British Pop Album in that time period. This is sophisticated pop music of the highest order. I think ALL of the singles on this album are Utterly Brilliant! even the ones that you can hear are too over-produced like the title song Sacred Heart: and You made me come to this. I absolutely love the tracks: Red Rocket, Heroine (as well as that incredible music video) directed by Sophie Muller. Run Silent, Run Deep (Which also has one of the most beautiful music videos (also directed by Sophie Muller) that I have EVER come across by women in a music video), Red Rocket and Electric Moon. For me...Sacred Heart is just naturally one of the most incredible albums I have EVER come across by a Female Pop Duo. I personally also think their 2nd studio album: Hormonally Yours, eclipsed the incredible recorded songs of the Sacred Heart studio album.

    • @ElectricCafe-45
      @ElectricCafe-45 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it. Let me answer your comment. I am pretty familiar with Bananarama since they came out until True Confessions. And with Fun Boy Three. Their 1982 - 1986 period, I have a couple of singles and the 3 albums from that period. My sister got me into them when I was very young. I do not know their period after. I only knew the 2 singles from Shakespears Sister Hormonally Yours album from this part of her career.. Just want you to know my experience with her which isn't a lot. I think I do "put myself" in the time frame of when it was made. In the review I talk about the production a lot and Alan Moulder's work with this album. 45/100 score on my system is 'below par' or 'not very good' and just under 'ok'. I dont find the album bad or horrible. And I did find a few songs I liked very music. I just felt although she has a good and interesting voice that they dont really know the direction her voice works well with. Which I think they found in Stay. The songs are all over the place on Sacred Heart. I do find a good amount of them catchy. I rated 6 of the 13 songs as good or at least 2 stars. So I like half the album. The other half ? I wish it was more sophisticated like you spoke about. There are tracks that verge into that for me and there is a lot of potential. The dance tracks - im not sure they work and there a few more that it just sounds like they are trying her voice on different styles. That one near the end almost sounds country. A reggae cover in there too. Just doesnt seem like a cohesive album. A few years ago I did watch the Bananarama documentary with Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Its a British made documentary. It does suck how they were viewed in the press. I have never thought they were cheesy or not talented. They often make my 80s night DJing. I wanted to like it more. Hopefully someone soon will get me to review Hormonally Yours. I am curious for that follow up. Thanks for your comment btw. Its only an opinion. I am happy you like it so much. Hopefully you will agree with some of my other scores/reviews. Cheers.

      "Personally, I think your review is generally how many Americans view this kind of particular brand of British Pop music." You might be right here. I grant you that. I generally like more new wave than pop music. I do like Lisa Stansfield, Simply Red, Alison Moyet and maybe some others that are sort of in this vein. What other artists would you consider pop music around 1985-1989 in Britain? Funny enough, sometimes I review British artists from the 80s and have mentioned how strange it is they have some success and had very little in their home country of UK. I mentioned this on my Fixx and Naked Eyes videos.. Strangely those didnt do well at all in UK. I think the UK press was pretty rough on many 80s bands like Depeche Mode. Bands that had a darker side especially. In America Bananarama was considered a dance act. Because of I heard a Rumour, Robert Deniro's waiting and Venus. Which was unfair toward them and other all girl bands. Female freestyle and dance artists were very big in 1984-1989. Madonna, Miami Sound Machine, Janet Jackson, Jody Watley, Taylor Dayne, Cathy Denis, Expose, Lisa Lisa & the Cult Jam, Sheena Easton, Belinda Carlisle, Debbie Gibson, Debbie Deb, Trinere and many, many more.

      @@ElectricCafe-45 1985-1989 in Britain? ( Some of these Acts may really be considered Rock Acts, but I mention them here because they did some very great British Pop Music of this period). Erasure, Tears For Fears, Toyah, Alison Moyet ( coming out of her venture with Vince Clarke/Yazzo, and the starting of her Solo Career),Duran Duran, Kim Wilde and Wham. I am surprised that Robert De Niro is considered more of a dance track in the US, because in the UK It is considered as just one of Bananarama’s very best tracks of the earlier part of their career. I don’t know if the US had Robert De Niro in the remixed version, perhaps ( maybe) that is why it’s considered more of a dance track over there. I don’t know. Depeche Mode were lucking to garner US fans very early in their career. Vince Clark was there for their debut album Speak and Spell, but left after the album was made, where he formed Yazzo with Alison Moyet. They brought in Alan Wilder, who was the real sound architect for the band. This was something he never got true credit for in the band. In fact, many believe this was the reason he left the band, after they recorded the album: Songs of Faith and Devotion. So when Alan Wilder came into the group, they made this conscious decision as a group that they would completely turn away from the pop elements of their debut album, and go for a more darker indie-pop route direction. Which was a decision here that really saved the future of their music career. This decision here alone ( further down the line) would give the band enormous respect in the United States. But in the period of the mid 1980s, they were coming out with songs and albums so quickly. Each album getting better and better, The US, just could not ignore this group. They released Music for the Masses Album, that got the group a hell of a lot of promotion in the United States, and was the launching pad for Violator and the incredible success that album would garner for the group. Yeah …you’re right about the press with UK Bands. In particular in the UK….The NME ( music newspaper) could be very cruel in particular to British Pop Groups in this time period.

    • @rogerhoward7498
      @rogerhoward7498 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I also think that in the US in this time period, you had a production duo like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who were dominating the Black-American Pop-Dance scene, in so much of a way, that eventually white pop acts would be influenced by this production sound into their own music. The productions of Jimmy Jam and Lewis, merging with the beats and rhythms that were also coming out of Black-American Hip-Hop music genre, just could not be ignored by Groups of ALL Music Genres in the United States in this time period.

      All these music dimensions that were happening in the US in this time period , would also be a very big influence on UK music acts going into the 1990s, as well as the Noughties as well.

    It's one of the craziest observations for me about the 80s music. 1986 was such a great year, so many memorable debut albums (Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Roxette, The Escape Club, Crowded House), so many strong albums from established bands (Depeche Mode, A-ha, Talk Talk, Metallica, Genesis) and solo artists (Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Chris De Burgh, Chris Rea, etc.) and such a low point for New Order, right between the two excellent albums, Low-Life and Substance. The closer Every Little Counts stands out thanks to the giggles, there's a couple of ok tracks on Side B, but the biggest hit Bizarre Love Triangle feels out of place and I actually prefer the 1994 version. Many New Order fans rank Brotherhood in the top 3 but I totally don't see why.

      Ya its a rough album for sure. I had to put it 'below par' or not very good. Even with a 5 star track in it with Bizarre Love Triangle, I couldn't get it to ok. I honestly think they turned it into a joke. Hence the giggles and clunky songs. I dont think I gave any track over a 2 3/4 beside Bizarre. My favorite version is the one on Substance which I think is the 12" version on the maxi. i think. I honestly think they were pressured into making it.

    I know Alan Moulder from his work with The Smashing Pumpkins, never thought of him being a dance producer, and the other bands he produced are more in the rock territory. But he wasn't involved with this, was he? He did the next one and Stay was my introduction to the band, but a confusing one because it made me believe that Marcella was the lead singer, while it's Siobhan all the way. So we've never got another Stay and my experience with both albums was somewhat disappointing. They reunited in 2019 and released a compilation and an EP, both very good but I realized they're not an album act. They make good singles and there's a good chemistry in the things they do but their albums are too patchy. The same year Exposé released my favourite album of their short discography and I played it a lot. And then there were Wilson Phillips and other great female acts, so Sacred Heart must have been forgotten by then.

      Ya he remixed Everyrhing Counts in 1989 so that's where I first heard his name. He also remixed Eurythmics and I think Modern English. But ya hes more know for heavier stuff. And shoegaze. It's strange but I have reviewed a handful of albums hes been involved with. Jesus and the mary chain, NIn, Curve (which I felt he had the most impact on), Ride and My Bloody Valentine. And Shakespeare sister. Looks like he was involved in their 2nd album and may have remixed Stay and I Dont Care. I did notice he did soemthing with Banderas too. This Shakespears Sister album kind of confirmed by thoughts on the Curve album. I felt their beats were often being too aggressive for Toni Hallidays voice also at times. Which is kind of a sign of the time in the early 90s when many bands were trying to take alternative rock music and blend it more with heavier beats.

    This comment would be more appropriate under the rating system video, but I'd like to make a point about ranking DM albums. I've been playing them in random order during the holidays while reading other people's reviews and it's a challenging task to compare the early albums with anything post-Violator. I can't place Speak & Spell anywhere because it's just so different from the rest of the catalogue. It's equally hard to compare weaker albums from different eras, like A Broken Frame with Spirit or Exciter. A couple of good tracks but if I don't care about the majority of the rest, I don't know how low I should rate them individually. Rating the album based on the average score per track doesn't work for me here. Maybe the album length should come into play. An album of 9 tracks with the same average score per track as an album of 12 tracks are not exactly the same. Should the longer album be ranked higher? If one album has 5 tracks at 4/5 and 5 fillers at 1/5 while another one has 8 decent tracks with consistency between 2/5 and 3/5, should I go for the best tracks or the overall consistency? If my least favorite songs are on the album should it be ranked higher than a hit-and-miss album with some of their absolute best stuff on it?

    • @ElectricCafe-45
      @ElectricCafe-45 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good points. I appreciate your thoughts. I can see your point about longer albums versus shorter ones if they have the song average for the album. I definitely consider the cohesiveness of albums when it comes to length. But I think if the songs are rated it helps me have a better idea of where I want to place the album score. I will keep that in mind though. Its a good thought, I will see if there is an upcoming album review where I do feel it makes a difference. As I am rating these New/ambient/Experimental albums this month, some of them I am not rating songs because it doesnt seem to help all the time. Depends on the album/songs length. I guess I feel with ambient albums its more about the overall opinion even more so that individual songs. I like your thoughts on a more consistent album being possibly ranked higher than ones with highs and more lows. I think people dont keep that in mind. I rated Wild by Erasure kind of low. Even surprising myself because there are some good tracks on it. But thats why I alike rating the songs because it reminds me about each track and how it relates to properly scoring it as a whole. I agree with ranking some albums higher than other from different times.It makes it hard. I feel like it helps if I was there when they were released. With DM, I go back to Construction Time Again. I can imagine if I was new to DM trying to rank 40 years worth of music to each other that it would have a hard time being fair. I will be the first one to say my system is perfect.. I can always make it better and try to as this channel continues. Thanks again for your thoughts!

      @@ElectricCafe-45 thanks for the fast feedback! I'm actually in a situation like this right now because despite liking DM for 30+ years (my first album was a compilation of Singles 81-85 that I didn't even buy but recorded from TV) I never owned a single studio album by them. I only purchased a few compilations in the last 3 years, and my favorite album Black Celebration this week. I knew all the singles but I'm going back to hear and compare the album tracks. As I commented earlier, Condemnation was the turning point for my interest in the band's music. Barrel Of A Gun and I Feel Loved were the last nails in the coffin. Then I heard Precious and Wrong and Heaven and Where's The Revolution and I got a new hope. Since Andy died, I've been playing the whole back catalogue and rediscovering 40+ of the albums I never really knew. This is what I think makes me impartial compared to older fans who were there during the imperial era. I tend to trust younger fans more because they see each album anew with a 2020s vision and are not affected by the memories from the 80s. We probably disagree on this but I find it especially helpful for myself when I rate bands who stopped playing before I knew they had existed.

LIke Shakespear's Sister debut album I did this week. I have heard a lot of music in the genres I like but I am always open to liking something I havent heard but might even know I wont like much by. But I'm happy if i can fine 2 3/5 rated tracks out of 10. Thats 2 songs I didnt enjoy before. I always want to learn more. And learning knew bands or albums in the 70s, 80s and 90s is getting much more rare. So if I find one or remember one I dont know or an album I didnt hear, Im probably gonna review it. I try to review 1 or 2 albums out of every 20 reviews of new to me albums. I want to keep it fresh. So I doubt you will see many below 30 as I feel like I have an idea of what I like. I am starting a service if people want to pay me to review a song or an album So it could get interesting. But I want people to email me first because I'm not reviewing the normal stuff. I want them to know I wont be doing certain music if I think I know I wont really like it. I dont want to make people mad. Eventually, I would like people that are newer electronic producers look for my opinion. That would be ideal. Plus I might be able to help them find a label if its music I really like. But it should be interesting if people want to pay me to review something. I also wont be playing the song or the album unless they have the copyrights to it. I dont want to get into the copyrights drama on youtube can ge videos deleted. It will get worse for those who do have videos up with copyright videos playing. So hopefully if people want me to review they understand that. I have my email up as part of my first 10 seconds of each video coming up this week. Should be interesting ;)

    Disco 5 doesn't exist, but I never enjoyed Disco 2,3,4. Disco 2 is probably the most useless release from the band ever. Total mutilation of the hits from Very. I wish they kept the name for what would become Introspective and released Relentless as Disco 3 in 1994 complete with a couple of appropriate b-sides like Euroboy and Some Speculation. I admit I don't like Introspective in its actual form. Great songs, bad mixes. I prefer the b-side version of I Want A Dog from 1987. Always On My Mind was equally better as a single edit. So was It's Alright, another cover (2 out of 6 songs are cover versions!) There was a vinyl edit of I'm Not Scared lasting 4'37, totally ok for me. A Japanese-only compilation In Depth from 1989 is closer to what I wanted the album to sound. I compiled my own version of Introspective from single edits available on Discography and added some b-sides from Alternative. 11 excellent mixes with a total time under 50 minutes. Favorite album: Very (1993). Least favorite: Super (2016). Side A is unbearable. Half of Side B is pretty good, especially the last 2 songs.

Some particular songs are unique to Erasure, e.g. Turns the Love to Anger is one of my favorite album tracks here. Very poignant lyrics and amazing song structure from the quiet first verse to the full explosion in the end. Drama on Wild! is pretty similar, I can see why you dislike both. But they are both great lyrically and represent the type of songs I could only expect from Erasure. As the songs became less complex and more radio friendly, the band started losing its charm.

I think DDD was still pretty rare for the late 80s. Most low scores are based on different expectations. I have a cassette of Wonderland, but never cared to buy either The Circus or Loveboat. In retrospect, it’s still one of my least favorite and the most dated Erasure albums. Everything they did here was so much better on The Innocents. Lyrics, vocals, melodies, arrangements, production (Stephen Hague). I like The Two Ring Circus slightly better because it contains better, more atmospheric mixes and omits the most dreadful album track Sexuality replacing it with an orchestral mix of a cool ballad from Wonderland, My Heart…So Blue. I’m convinced that most positive reviews come from the early fans who discovered the band before 1988, so the nostalgia factor plays a big role here. But the band improved a lot vocally, lyrically and musically by the 90s, there’s a huge difference between this one and the self-titled masterpiece from 1995. I give The Circus 53/100 based on 2.13 per track. Only the last 3 tracks got more than 2.5 points. I'm actually surprised it didn't end up in the 40-49 range because it's really below average in so many aspects. 1. It Doesn’t Have to Be 1.75 (the bridge in Swahili means “Lie down beside me in my room”, not exactly the way I see the idea of unity conveyed in the verses) 2. Hideaway 2.25 3. Don’t Dance 1.25 4. If I Could 2.25 5. Sexuality 0.5 6. Victim of Love 2.0 7. Leave Me to Bleed 1.75 8. Sometimes 3.25 9. The Circus 3.5 10. Spiralling 2.75 It’s worth mentioning the funny coincidence between the debut Pet Shop Boys’ album Please (1986) which ends on the song called Why Don’t We Live Together? and the first track on Erasure’s The Circus (1987) has a line “Why Can’t We Live Together?” Why did you omit Sexuality from the review? The album should have 10 tracks.

      Hey. I forgot about Sexuality. I was comparing the tracklists of Two Ring Circus and Circus. Completely forgot to include it. If I included it, the album would have dropped to around 68/100 I think. It isnt a good track I agree. I'm surprised you don't like 'Leave me to Bleed'. I dont have the connection to Innocents as you do. I had the singles and know the album well so it should be interesting rating it. As will be I Say, I Say and Chorus. The 1995 will certainly get extra points for the enjoyment of playing it as an album being mixed imo. I think you are right about Erasure and it being a point of nostalgia with certain albums. We seem to be proving that :) in retrospect it probably wasnt fair to rate Two Ring Circus versions. Maybe I should change the title to Two Ring Circus so people dont get confused.

      @ElectricCafe-45 Leave Me to Bleed is definitely better on The Two Ring Circus. I used to like the song more but I played the whole album several times in the past few months trying to figure out if I like it more than Wonderland and no, I don't. I don't blame Flood, there must be something else, but it pales in comparison with most tracks on The Innocents. Couldn't give it more than 2/5. I was indeed confused by the track order you used in the review, it makes sense now, but the original Circus is a different beast.

      @ElectricCafe-45 The Innocents is a legendary album and to make it even more legendary, it was remastered in 2009 during the longest gap between the studio albums and one of the hugely popular album tracks Phantom Bride was officially released as the 4th single 21 years since the original album! Another EP named Erasure Club was also released in 2009 and contains two mixes of Push Me Shove Me from Wonderland by none other than Jon Marsh of The Beloved!

      @@adiceloI did rate the original version of Circus though as it's not on Two Ring Circus. Regarding Innocents. Sixty Thousand is rough track. I might take Sexuality over that track ;) Do you think I should do the 13 track Innocents with the extra 3 or 4 tracks? I cant remember the original playlist off hand. I remember the extended playlist more. Especially because When I needed you which is a track I always gravitated towards on it. Phantom Bride, Hallowed Ground and, Heart of Stone I might not rate as high as you do. I could see Ship of Fools being a 4.0, Chains of Love and Little Respect 3.75, witch in a ditch 3.25 and Yahoo a 3.0 so that's already 5 over 3.0 That's a good sign. Weight of the world 3.5 or 3.75 for me personally too. I dont think any aong except sixty thousand under a 2.0 So innocents should be in the 67-<72 range for sure

      @@rediscoveryrecords1348 Pretty much the same for me but I would rate Chains of Love lower. I first heard Victim of Love and Chains of Love on Pop! The first 20 hits in 1992 and thought the latter was also from The Circus. But it's one of the earliest CD-singles in my collection and I remember preferring the b-sides. 65000 is another filler for sure, but at least it's an instrumental. A Little Respect and Ship of Fools are my top 10 Erasure songs and deserve 4.0 easily. Hallowed Ground is 3.5. I don't rate the CD-only bonuses but When I Needed You was a fantastic b-side and should have been the A-list song instead of 65000.

    Happy new year! Italo Disco is an interesting style which I think later evolved into Italo House and other Italo Dance styles that I know slightly better (Black Box, 49ers and USURA come to mind). Savage is one of the brightest stars of the genre and Tonight is indeed a genre classic (which therefore should be rated at least 80/100 according to your scale definition). It has been at least 7/10 for me for decades, but its unique sound which has never really dated, the magnificent 12" single mixes and the tightness and cohesiveness of the album itself earned extra 0.5 points per song now that I played it again in full (Computerized Love was on the initial ZYX release instead of Only You and its b-side Turn Around thus making the album technically an EP, but I didn't include this track in the review.) Savage is a strange phenomenon in the pop music world. Only 2 studio albums in 40 years and multiple singles occasionally released on compilations under different names in different countries. He did a great job as a producer Robyx discovering Double You in 1992. All in all 80/100 for Tonight as of now. P.S. You must have overlooked all the hilarious lyrics, especially on his first 1983 hit Don't Cry Tonight. They had been printed out on later releases as they're heard and most fans just couldn't care less about the meaning of those songs. Roberto's English has improved by his latest album Love And Rain (2020) but I still can't get over that first hit from 1983.

      Happy new year! Yes, Italo disco into italo house. I also enjoy ambient house from Italy which really took over in 1989-1994. Italy loves their house music. Lots of great labels full of them. Lyrics are one thing I dont focus on a lot to be honest. The actual words or the meaning of tracks. Which I probably should do a better job of. But if I dont do a good job on that, I think I might have a better grasp of what the music can convey that most people perhaps. I have always had a problem dedicating tracks to girls. The music makes me feel so much. Then I read the lyrics and I'm thinking, "those lyrics wont be romantic to a girl!". Lol. Often they be moody or sad about a breakup when to me, sounded like love. Haha. I was gonna joke and say "I give this record an extra star just for pronouncing melody like mel-oww-dee"

    • @adicelo
      @adicelo หลายเดือนก่อน

      @rediscoveryrecords1348 that's a good point, but I find it somewhat paradoxal that on so many good albums it's the instrumental tracks that get a low score. Is it because of their instrumental nature or just because they're not good enough compared to other songs? If vocals are important then so must be the lyrical content. I listen to hip-hop music where the rap lyrics are even more important, and it's another extreme case where I don't often connect with the music. I tried to love all those classic US hip-hop albums from both East and West coast alike and they didn't do much for me. Meanwhile, the DJs and rappers representing Eurodance of the 90s did a much greater job combining catchy melodies and meaningful lyrics. Down Low, a German duo from Kaiserslautern, was a good example. And the singles from Culture Beat, Magic Affair and Snap! of the early 90s have become classic hits worldwide.

  • @adicelo
    @adicelo หลายเดือนก่อน

    I don't go by scores but rather by the order of preference ranking either songs within albums or full discographies. Here's why: 1. It gives me more information about the actual preferences and it's generally more accurate than individual scores. Two people can agree on the order and disagree in the numbers, but it's the order that defines similarity in taste. If one Nirvana fan rates the three studio albums by scores 4/10, 6/10, 5/10, while another fan gives them 6/10, 8/10, 7/10 respectively, I will understand their tastes better from the order and not from the fact that a particular album was ranked 6/10 or 8/10. Unless they care to provide all the individual scores I won't know what their favourite album is. 2. Methodologies and scales differ, and if someone asks me how I rate a record I'll have to explain methodology and it can be too much work. Many fans tend to exaggerate the real scores going by the feel similar to that in weather forecasts. It can be -2 outside but the real feel is -10 due to cold wind and humidity. If you're at the party with a nice drink, the same song will have a different effect than when you're stuck in the traffic jam and late for work. 3. Finally, genres also differ and you can't expect a Metallica fan to judge Kanye West albums accurately. I have a problem ranking Genesis albums because I'm not a big prog rock fan. I can enjoy early Marillion, Osiris or Split Enz. But We Can't Dance was my first Genesis album and even though I didn't really enjoy the latest one without Collins, I understand that album better than the classic ones of the 70s. For most Genesis fans, We Can't Dance belongs in the bottom 3. For me it's a top 3 material. Supper's Ready might have been a great song but I'd rather play Land of Confusion. A similarity in scores won't reveal how different our tastes are in a particular music genre.

      Nice. Thanks for this. Ideally once I'm done with the rating of the album I try to do a quick check on the artists othet albums I may have rated as I go to compete to where I believed they stand to each other. But I agree. Placement of albums and songs by the artist is very important. And something I will keep in mind as I go and when I finalize some lists. Funny you mention that about Genesis. I have the same experience with Genesis bit with the 1986 Invisibke Touch album as you do with I cant dsnce. Maybe we are about 5-6 years difference in age lol. I was 10 when I got into 10 genesis that year when it came out. 1986. I'm going to be going thru Genesis albums and do my best rating them. Its gonna be hard. I have always been a big Peter Gabriel fan and that's helped me appreciate early Genesis a bit more. I'm not a phil collins solo hater like a lot of people. Sure there is a lot of saturation in his big hits. Like I could care less if I never hear sussudio or dont forget my number style ones. But you cant knock hes done alot of good ballads and songs. I saw his Both Sides of the Story concert in 1994with my mom that year. She liked him a lot too.
