A day in life at anchor at the San Blas Islands

days start and end early in the tropics, and one day blends into another. It was fairly windy during filming so we didn't snorkel. Not shown: me working remotely, because it's not that interesting.
Exploring Narganá, an island village in Kuna Yala, Panama

We anchored in the delta of Rio Diablo and rowed to shore at Narganá (also called Yandup), looking for fruits and vegetables. A bridge connects Narganá to its neighboring island Corazón de Jesus.
Snorkeling Coco Bandero - San Blas Islands of Kuna Yala, Panama
มุมมอง 212หลายเดือนก่อน
After hopping from the Holandés cays, we stopped in Coco Bandero to visit friends and hopefully catch a veggie boat. Return to San Blas
มุมมอง 1.6K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Back in May, our first visit to the San Blas islands was cut short by a Starlink failure. We've finally returned, ready to explore the Guna Yala, an autonomous region of indigenous people who maintain their pre-hispanic language and culture.

Cruising life on pause - waiting out the hurricanes
มุมมอง 895 หลายเดือนก่อน
We're waiting out the first half of the 2024 hurricane season in Turtle Cay Marina. We originally only planned to stay long enough to replace a defective Starlink receiver, but 3 months later, we're still here. Life's been quiet and peaceful here in our little hurricane hole. Occasionally, we enjoy the company of various European crews here. All are waiting out the hurricane season, and some wi...
Exploring Turtle Cay Marina, Nombre de Dios, Panama

We stopped in Turtle Cay, a tiny marina just west of Kuna Yala, so that we could get a replacement Starlink dish shipped to us. It is wonderfully isolated, being three miles away from the nearest paved road. There are just a handful of people here - the dockmaster, groundskeepers that live nearby, and a half-dozen people that work in a nearby restaurant and small hotel. Most of the boats here a...

The area is named the East Holandés Cays, or more properly, the Maqui islands, as they’re known to the indigenous Guna people. Fort San Lorenzo and Rio Chagres
มุมมอง 3759 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video, we depart Shelter Bay Marina for the Chagres River. This was our first sail in the Caribbean, and it was a rough one. The entrance to the river is tricky, with an underwater reef and sand bars, but we chose slack-tide for our crossing. Once in the river, the water was flat calm. We dropped anchor at the "Happy Howler" anchorage, and true to its name, we heard howler monkeys all d...
The Ruins of Fort Sherman
มุมมอง 9059 หลายเดือนก่อน
Fort Sherman was a US Army base built in the early 1900s to protect the northern entrance to the Panama Canal. Along with the canal, the United States turned over the fort to the Panamanian government in 1999, who predictably let it the majority of the buildings fall into ruin and be reclaimed by the jungle. We saw the same in Panama City, ableit in an urban environment - acre after acres of US...
Transiting the Panama Canal in a little sailboat

Finally the advisor’s radio came alive, “15 Echo Charlie, transit control.” “15 Echo Charlie here, go ahead.” We all star...

I have recently moved to Panama and it amazes me that there are so many abandoned houses, factories, buildings, resorts, apartment blocks, etc. in Panama. It is as though no one does any research as to the viability or demand for these projects and so they fail.

People buy into a tropical dream. People get sold a tropical dream. Yes, it can be beneficial to buy these properties while they are dirt cheap because they're so remote, but it can take decades for society and development to catch up to these areas to allow a profitable business. In the meantime, people exhaust their funds and are forced to close up shop. It's a nice dream, and it sounds great when you're discussing it over drinks with a local realtor under the palm trees and beautiful ocean view. My father-in-law who has lived in Panama for 45 years likes to use the phrase "...they're selling the dream..." when he sees people viewing properties in Panama with a realty company. "It's easy to buy in Panama but hard to sell in Panama" is a fact that must be taken to heart when buying property in Panama or other countries. Think long and hard about all the factors, and know that it could take years to sell your dream property should you want or need to. Rent or go small ($) if you want a piece of the tropics. If it works out, great. If not, at least you will not have tanked your retirement funds on a dream that did not work out for whatever reason...
