Outdated: FlashFloppy Gotek Floppy Emulator for Yamaha SY77/SY99 (STM32-based, see description)
**IMPORTANT**: Gotek has changed their design and swapped the STM32 microcontroller for a a cheaper Artery AT32. So this procedure is **outdated** for new Gotek models.
In this video, I show how I flashed a Gotek Floppy Emulator with the FlashFloppy firmware, how I did the OLED, rotary encoder and speaker hardware modifications. I show how I prepared the USB thumb drive with disk images and how I build the modded floppy emulator into a Yamaha SY77 synthesizer as target system. I hope this is useful for some of you. If so, let me know in the comments :-)
This is (mostly) a DIY video. Obviously, everything you do - like following this guide - is at your own risk. There are several sellers around that sell these modified drives premade for reasonable prices.
Be aware of a second flash programming method (usb programming or dfu programming) not shown in the video that does not require a serial programmer. See github.com/keirf/FlashFloppy/wiki/Firmware-Programming, Method 2 USB Programming. However, you will need to have a usb cable type-A male to type-A male which depending on your sources can be roughly about the same cost as a serial programmer. Functionally, there is no real difference, but you may avoid the risk of getting a fake serial programmer and it might be slightly less work. You can find other video guides for "DFU gotek flashing" on youtube. You may then decide yourself which method you prefer.

Parts list:
You can get most of these parts either on Amazon, eBay or AliExpress. AliExpress is likely the cheapest, however, be aware that especially for the serial programmer there are fake devices going around that are optically indistinguishable from the orginals. If in doubt, I recommend to source from reputable sources such as adafruit or sparkfun. It is less likely that you'll get fakes from them.
- Gotek Floppy Emulator (see github.com/keirf/FlashFloppy/wiki/Gotek-Compatibility). When we flash FlashFloppy, we don't need the specific 720kb Gotek models.
- Yamaha SY 77, SY77, MITSUMI D357B, D357 B, Floppy Belt , Adapter 26 Pin (from ebay). Make sure you grab the right one for your synth. The SY99 etc. adapters are different.
- i2C OLED display 0,91" 128x32 pixels (5V compatible)
- Rotary Encoder
- Piezo Speaker (only necessary if you are nostalgic and want the floppy sounds)
- FTDI232RL adapter (5V compatible) or similar serial programmers capable of flashing stm32 - be aware of fake devices
- Jumper wires
- Pin Headers

    • @bendecaf
      @bendecaf ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you cannot use the samples as FM operator waveforms, but you can use the samples for sample-based modulation (what Yamaha called RCM back then) in AFM synthesis. But I'm not entirely sure.

    • @ShallRemainUnknown
      @ShallRemainUnknown ปีที่แล้ว

      The sample waveforms on the WaveBlade behave exactly as the samples in a Yamaha waveform ROM expansion card or SY/TG77/99 internal sample ROM. So, you can use them for AWM2 synthesis (essentially PCM subtractive) and/or RCM synthesis (FM-PCM hybrid interactive). The WaveBlade samples cannot be used as AFM synthesis waveforms, as those (16 types) are not sample-based.

    One thing I noticed on my system and it took me a few minutes to figure this out: When I went in to PROGRAM 1S and selected the file, I paused for a few moments, then loaded the file and gave me a whole bunch of errors. You have to notice when selecting the file to upload that the Binary box on the bottom of the dialog is checked - it then works error free. Took me a few times to notice that, but would well be worth the mention. It's on Page 37 of the manual. Once it is initially checked it will remain, but the first time it is not automatically checked (at least on my system). Thanks for the wonderful tutorial!

    These are not the demo songs on the disk that came with my unit. This is the first time I heard of these songs. These must be another set released later or earlier. I got my SY77 in 1990. The first song starts with a new age style pad, then a slow piano part comes in and plays some themes, then the drums kick-in to continue playing a catchy synth lead tune.

    I first witnessed the might of the SY77 at the age of 17 I think with my dad at a theatre in England. My dad won me an SY77 T-shirt based on our ticket I'm guessing or perhaps our seating arrangement. Which looking back I think is some great luck considering anyone could of course randomly been selected. Anyway it was the Vortex demo that struck me as the most impressive thing I'd ever heard. It was described by the guy presenting the piece as being in the jungle and stumbling upon a record player and then a Lion appearing as the music ramps up and then stumbling upon a jazz band to the ending back at the record player. It was so incredibly impressive to me esepecially the sax and just the sheer authenticity of what was being recreated. I knew then I simply had to have the machine. A year later with much help from my dad I managed to save the £2000 for it and I couldn't have felt more blessed What a time that was and I made very good on having such a wondeful machine. I continue to use this beast and it has been very good to me The guy presenting this that night was a chap from Frome in England where I would often visit his fantastic music shop with my dad. I'd love to know what happened to him but it was here I first found out about the SY77 when he told us of the event. I still have the receipt too for the machine which was purchased at his shop Oh and thanks so much for putting this up on youtube. Looked for years and I can't find the disk

      Brilliant story! I could not stretch to getting the SY77 in 1991 as I wanted other things like a full guitar setup and Yamaha MT100 MkII cassette four track, so I got the SY55 instead and I still use it today in 2023, and I managed to get all seven WAVE/DATA card sets and all the other DATA/RAM sets due to knowing someone in the music business (has a TV broadcasting father), and the rest I found on Ebay later on. I also added a TG55 which can be paired with the SY55 to double the polyphony, by switching on a setting on both synths. Does the SY77 and TG77 have this feature I wonder? I would love an SY77 if one came up on Ebay in nice condition, and not for stupid money. Sadly many of those have suffered abuse with live gigging, and tend to be falling to bits and in a sorry state.

    • @adroharv9213
      @adroharv9213 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EgoShredder I was very lucky in getting mine as just over half my dad helped with. Took a year saving my part too but it was worth it. Truthfully at first it was a little beyond me at but you do eventually learn. The fact that it had a built in sequencer was really the thing that sold me coming from my previous Technic Ax7 which was becoming rather limited in this sense. Did the Sy55 also have the 16 track sequencer? in which case that would have also been a worthy machine I really don't know regarding that very neat pairing feature of the 55 although I did for a couple of years own up and never used it. Sounds like an insanely great thing to have that as an option. Yeah SY77's tend to be around £300 to £400 still these days. They are really very reliable I find and you don't even have to replace the battery if you do the boot up reset thing. The battery itself also retains a little charge if you're always using it thereafter without any battery. At least it did seem to for me when I was using one of my other machines briefly all the best

    • @EgoShredder
      @EgoShredder ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adroharv9213 Yeah the SY55 has the same sequencer, just with the memory and tracks etc halved. Most of the SY55 samples and presets are on the SY77 from what I remember, and the expansion cards have the same samples for SY55 and SY77. The double polyphony feature plays half the notes of what you are playing on the SY, and the other half on the TG. In the settings its called "odd/even" for the note allocation. I remember preparing the sequencer for a pro studio demo in 1992, and when I got to the studio I thought I could sync the SY55 to the studio reel to reel multitrack and Steinberg Cubase 2.0 on his Atari ST (he had a Falcon 030 too). However the sync format was different, so that was an expensive lesson for me to learn. A few years ago I got a nostalgia itch, and bought another Yamaha cassette four track MT3X, and this time added a Yamaha YMC10 MIDI FSK Sync Converter. Within ten minutes without using a manual, I had the SY55 sequencer sync'd to the MT3X along with a Yamaha RY30 drum machine, and it was rock solid and tight! That was a 26 year itch well and truly scratched and put right! 🤣 Very satisfying and fun to do. That sync box would have saved me a lot of money and paid for itself, if I had known back then.

    • @EgoShredder
      @EgoShredder ปีที่แล้ว

      @cc-sm6eh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, unfortunately, the way to obtain these devices depends a little on where you live. The usual suspects to look for these devices are ebay, amazon or aliexpress. What you'll need are 0,91" 128x32 I2C oled SSD1306 modules. They are typically found in the context of Arduino devices. The speakers are just typical piezo speakers. Before starting with the modifications, I suggest you look around for information on the PSR 1000 and flashfloppy. Those floppy emulators do not work with all devices, they may need specific firmware versions (e.g. for Quickdisk devices) and they may require different jumper settings. Also, make sure you are aware of the alternate way (search in youtube for "gotek dfu programming") to flash the Gotek floppy emulators via USB cable. It may save you some time. Good luck!

      @cc-sm6eh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think there are any special requirements for the usb thumb drive. It has to be fat32 formatted, so the maximum is I think 32gb. But you'll likely struggle to fill up even 1gb for a SY77/SY99 thumb drive as 1 GB fits something like 1450 720kb disks. So you probably already have something that works. In my opinion, the main thing to consider is whether you'd like to have a short usb thumb drive - like the one I have used in the video. It looks slightly more elegant than something old and bulky.

      it's very capable. The only somewhat limiting factor is the relatively low 32 polyphony but a bit of planning allows for still very great multitude of sound. The sounds can be very booming thanks to being hybrid fm and samples and you feel this if going to a sample only based synth as I do when working on other stuff
