When I saw this live I was a young teenager who didn’t know her father. This musical resonated with me so much! I bought the CD and would listen to it on replay, especially “I never knew his name”. Now as an adult I met him and was very disappointed. Sometimes fairytales will never be reality. But witnessing the magic still gives hope in life and love! Listening to this for the first time in so many years, the words come to me so easily. What a great reminder that there’s a heart behind these hands!! Cheers!🥂 💖

I loved this musical - but never became a hit really ?

Theres a clip online of the archival recording - th-cam.com/video/aCfJ2BgopSk/w-d-xo.html with this description " An excerpt of the archival recording made by TOFT on May 23, 1979, of the original production of Sweeney Todd. It was during this time that Mr Cariou was having vocal difficulties after having inhaled dirt during the ascent in "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd," and this recording captures his occasional cough. " however, if you listen closely, at the end of a little priest 1:20:40 " have charity towards the world my pet, yes yes I know my love, we'll take the customers that we can get" are the EXACT same recording. its not like someone just took the audio and laid it over another video either, the sounds match perfectly with their mouths as well. So, this leads to the conclusion. That either, someone has slipped up, and mis labeled this audio recording as opening night when its ACTUALLY the audio from the archival recording. OR, it IS in fact the audio from the archival recording, but the archival recording WAS from opening night as well. This is an insane piece of broadway history.

Back in the mid-80s, my uncle had an extensive movie collection (all on beta tapes.) When I stayed with my grandparents, we used to stay up late and watch movies like this-ones I’d never managed to discover on my own. I miss those days so much. I miss him.
