No, Sometimes chickens will eat eggs and clean them up with no trace. Apparently in this case, they will do it with a chick inside as well. 99.999% sure my blame is laid on the correct culprits. I am not very happy with them at all. All month, they have been good, that nest has never been overturned, everyone has behaved. Chickens are opportunists, and they saw an opportunity here, for some unknown reason, I suppose. No skunks or racoons here either, and no access for any other creature either.

Oh many times! I like this setup, and the corrugated cardboard is great to set up in a curve. This design is expandable, but I would not make it smaller, because that heat lamp is needed, but there also needs to be space for the chicks to get away from heat too. Yes, baby chicks are adorable and interesting, and very easy to spend a lot of time observing, as they are so active and spontaneous!

And... is a lovely light red, as you noticed, it is different from most of our other calves! Striking! He is coming up in other videos, I am just slow at editing and keeping up! I refer to him as Our youngest calf, or Our last calf, Number 102! So you know when you see him!

Yes, when a chick is ordered from a hatchery, they are shipped in the mail at a day old, and the farmer receives them within a day or so. They get their first food and water at their new home. It is only possible, because the last thing a chick does before hatching, is absorb the yolk, and that is their food to tide them over until their first access to food and water. Even in the situation of the broody hen setting, the first eggs to hatch wait under mom until all the eggs have hatched, usually the hen stays on the nest a day or even longer, past the hatch, so some chicks can easily be 2-3 days old when she takes them off the nest. It is very amazing.

At this stage, I would not think it is due to the light, or the movement I created in the egg. When the egg is moved, the inside becomes stationary / stabilizes very soon. When I pause and look, and we see movement, that is the embryo doing what it does. I have seen blood veins pulse very clearly other times, while candling, and often movement, like this showed here. I think the embryo is just moving, like creatures do. Like a baby kicks before birth. Good questions!

Good ideas. I believe the idea behind a pencil, is it does not plug the pores of the egg, like crayons would. The marker is tempting, but I have stuck with the pencil, usually it is still visible, after the 21 days. Occasionally hard to read, but usually legible enough. 😃

@FarmerAlways lol, I didn't know a crayon would do that but I wondered if a dot or a marker would bother the egg, there is also stickers like small star one or small circle one that you could color code the days lol, I'm making it way more complicated 😄 🤣 but honestly I was trying to think of something that wouldn't rub off and something that would make it easier for you to know the dates ❤️❤️ I had good intentions I promise, sometimes my adhd brain works overtime to try and solve problems that are not even problems 🤣🤣

Yes, Usually with an incubator, we turn the eggs 2 to 3 times per day for the majority of the incubation of 21 days, I usually have an X and an O penciled on the egg shell to help with that. I turn the egg to one or the other facing up each time. As we are in the last 3 days of hatch, I understand we are supposed to leave the egg as is, in preparation to its big day. I have turned them today, but I believe I will keep them as is, from now on, if it helps the chick be in position, I am all for that. I am glad I was able to catch some movement within the eggs on camera, it is amazing to see, it amazes me every time!

Very interesting, thank you for the info! Georgia is good about coming and going, she does not seem to mind him staying behind, a few times she has seemed to ask him to come, or he has tried to make an exit, but both are quite content, which makes it go so much more smoothly! Usually right after a feeding, Georgia is ready to go back to pasture to the herd, and doesn't even look back, it seems she knows he is safe where he is. Other times she hangs out nearby, laying, chewing cud, and eventually wanders off, but almost always comes back for the next feeding time on her own.
