Visualisation of a wind turbine simulation using OpenFAST and Blender !!
This video is an example of an OpenFAST simulation exported into Blender. You can use Paraview for visualising OpenFAST simulations, but Blender is a better option :)
This is an actual simulation of the DeepCwind semi-submersible carrying a NREL 5MW wind turbine. The sea is not part of the actual simulation, it was created in Blender.

OpenFAST simulation results of a 15 Megawatt floating offshore wind turbine
มุมมอง 3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This video is the visualisation of an OpenFAST simulation of a 15 MW floating offshore wind turbine mounted on a semi-submersible. I can do a tutorial if anybody in interested :) #windturbine #semisubmersible #openfast #floatingwindturbine #offshore
Thank you for the step-by-step tutorial, very helpful! Could you also do a video introducing openfast toolbox and fastfarm?
@navalarchipelago2475 , very nice visualisation how do i realize the motions or the turbine from openFAST results ? I can only import one vtk file at a time. do you import all of the vtks from the openFAST results or do you import some type of file that contains the motions ? or do you animate the motions in blender itself without the actual results from openFAST ?
Thank you so much, I import one vtk file at a time.
How did you do include the sea and substructure in the visualization? If you could guide me , i would be very grateful for it. I could only make the visualization for the onshore wind turbine, but i was not able to make the sea and substructure appear
The sea is not real sea, the substructure can be exported the same way the turbine was exported. Use the latest version of Openfast, it gives all the required vtk files
Thank you for this tutorial
Thanks for your videos. if I was using the Umaine Volturn model would I need both the baseline and UMiane files because only the baseline contains the hydro data folder and data files whereas the Baseline model has additional folders for the Wind, ServoData, and Airfoils. Also I can only seem to download the files one at a time instead of the entire sub folder
Thank you so much for your comment. You can download all the required files from github. Apparently you have to download the whole repository and delete the files you don't need.
Hi, i'd like to know how you do the visualization of the opeFAST results?
Hi, I have done a video on visualization, th-cam.com/video/Eo8bV-H2yS8/w-d-xo.html ......hope this helps :)
Thank you!!!!!!
nice!
Please make more tutorials
I can barely hear the commentary which is a shame.
Noted...thanks for your suggestion :)
Hi, I am trying to use openfast to do some simulations on the 15MW reference platform. Could you help me with that?
I wanna ask if it is the same way for visualizing mode shapes ? Thank you !
What windspeed is this?
It was 8 m/s
Would you like a sample of a 15mW turbine?
check the IEA 15MW turbine
The design posted is pitch set for 5m/s, but has other pitch settings for 11, 18, 25 m/s. I would like openfast sims at all points. Please message me to discuss.
@@HolbrookAerospace I didn't understand. Th wind speed can be changed in the inflowfile. Blade pitch can be adjusted in the elastodyn file.
hello, thanks for the job. is this video related with further one about the Installation (by the way, i cannot hear you there)? when i run openfast in order to visualise the Wind Turbine like you, i get the following error. could you help me with
Hi, this works with all simulations in openfast. What error do you get ?
@@navalarchipelago2475 i have get it. a file was missed with Servodyn input datei. thx! but i want to ask you: Do you have learning material about OpenFast?
Thanks for the tutorial. I would appreciate if you could do a similar video about the python toolbox.
Thanks for this video, I am actually encountering some problems after going through the steps you explained. OpenFAST encountered an error during module initialization. Simulation error level: FATAL ERROR can you help out pls?
Can you give me more details on the error message ?
Thanks for the video. It was really helpful. Please make more videos on openfast.
Please make the tutorial 🙏
Great video! We need more tutorials like these. If you do make a tutorial video about using the python toolbox, would a matlab version be possible too?
Hi, could you pls send me the link for the tutorial video about using the python toolbox? I would really appreciate that.
@@kylezhang35 the video isn't out. I was suggesting the uploader to create a tutorial video about the python toolbox.
Appreciated
Do you have Cp values? I would like to valide your results with mine!
Hi, this was just a demonstration, I don't have the Cp values
@@navalarchipelago2475 thanks, do you know where can I find such results ?
Thank you! Do you plan on doing more OpenFAST tutorials?
Yes, I am working on it
Seems to be high pitch for 1m seas. What wind speed was this simulated with in openfast
Hi, this is just a demonstration, I used 12 mps wind, I guess moordyn was off
Thanks fpr sharing
Thanks a lot
This helped a lot!! Thanks!
could you kindly do A tutorial on how to install openfast on mac?
Hello. I also want to visualize the floating semi-submersible structure and the mooring lines. How do I do it? Thanks
To visualize floating platforms you have to use Openfast 2.5 or older. It is not possible to visualize mooring lines, unless you edit the source code.
@@navalarchipelago2475 Hello yes i'm using Openfast 3.0 versiob but I'm unable to see the VTK file for the floating platform. Can you please help me on it
@@muffaddaljuzer2439 2.5 or older version, like 2.4, 2.3 etc. not newer.
thanks a lot !
yes ! please make a tutorial 😊
Thanks!!!!
Thanks for the video. Will there be a further explanation to the sub folders as well?
Yes, I will do it soon.
@@navalarchipelago2475 That was a quick reply actually :) Thanks a lot!
Thanks for this easy intro in OpenFAST! Just a viewer feedback: The fast moving and jumping mouse pointer is a bit distracting.
Thanks for your feedback Alexander.
Is this IEA15MW Volturn model?? Don't you mind if I ask you what specific module you selected to simulate mooring dynamics?
The model is called Activefloat and I used Moordyn for the mooring
Very helpful!!!
Can you make a tutorial video for using the python toolbox of openfast.
Finally found something proper about openfast. Thanks for putting out this video.
You're welcome !
hello there, please make a tutorial for this one
Please do tutorials on open fast
Hello! Can you please make a tutorial for mooring analysis?
I need a tutorial please!!!!
Hey, is the turbine you simulated to scale?
Yes it is.
Need tutorial please. The installation of openfast is super annoying.
Sure, I will do a tutorial video soon
