Fruit of the Spirit: Love - Day Four | Five Good Minutes
In this episode, Jake Williams begins a series on the Fruit of the Spirit looking at the first fruit of Love. Today he talks about why our relationships are filled with brokenness and how Biblical love is what we need to heal them.
Today's Passage
Ephesians 5:21-28 - Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

I challenge both my daughter and my grand children with one simple thing - Any time you are told something, question it by asking "What does the Bible say about...". I want them to be Biblically relevant and realize that Jesus doesn't concern himself with anything other than him being 100% relevant to you. The only thing we need to do is bring the relevancy of Jesus to the cultures we live in or are exposed to

Absolutely false. Hypothetical situations never happen. Notice how false preachers NEVER use their owns situations to explain scripture. That proves they are false teachers

All men are in power because of God’s will. He knows the outcome. Jesus said this to Pilate. And God knew Pilate was put on the throne because God knew Pilates weak nature and fear of Caesar and God used this in the plan of allowing His Son to die on that cross for our sins. John 19:11 Jesus says to Pilate, You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”

You guys mix salvation and discipleship. You point at the fruits YOU produce instead of the saving BLOOD of Christ. You confuse people. The fact that one believes is the assurance he is saved. John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. Believe, believe, believe, not has a changed lifestyle. You point at the promise of Jesus to assure people, not on themselves, the sinner.

The analogy of aspirin and rejoicing has me confused. Rejoicing isn’t raising your threshold for pain. Rejoicing is saying what is happening in my life doesn’t matter because this world is temporary, what matters is God, and oh yea, I gave all of my pain and tribulation to the Lord and now my yoke is light. I don’t have to have anxiety because I laid those concerns at His feet. The enemy can no longer torment me in this manner.

Enjoyed this conversation. Creation Regained was one of the few books that reoriented how I understood how the gospel and its impact on all of life. The Structure-Direction discussion was transformational. Fun Fact - Wolters wrote that book as an outgrowth of a summer training course he taught many years ago for the CCO (Coalition for Christian Outreach), my previous employer. Even Wolters has admitted he has a dry writing style, but making the effort to read it was definitely worth it. Happy that you have spotlighted this important book.

The NIV is my favourite Bible translation, I like that it's easy to understand while being very accurate. Also the NIV is gender inclusive language can make the Bible much easier to understand, they've done a much better job than when they did the TNIV which was gender neutral.

I have been mulling these same thoughts around in my head. I found your video because I was looking for someone who would try to conceptualize God's determinism and man's free will coexisting. I agree with your assessment that both do exist and scripture supports it. Accepting this idea leads to one more Truth of God that is not completely understandable. I also prioritize God's sovereignty, but I absolutely believe that somewhere in there is a hidden need for men to believe. One thing I would like to bring to your attention is a train of thought from author John Eldredge. John, in multiple books, expresses this idea that God is the author of an epic story, and we are part of the story. As the author, God has complete control of His story, and it will play out the way He desires. This conceptualization would, to a point, explain why God can still be good even though He provides an opening for evil to enter the story. This is because Love wins in the end. I would also direct you to a musician named David Wilcox and his song Show The Way. Thanks for posting this. I was feeling rather isolated in my thoughts, and now, at least, I don't feel quite so alone.

Atheist don' use faith they use good evidence. Since there's no good evidence that any gods exists there's no reason to warrant belief. Note: Faith as in belief without evidence(Hebrews 11:1)

Nice job with Mark 7! If you look up the prayer that went along with the ceremonial washing of hands it might help to deepen your understanding of what Jesus was upset about. The prayer falsely claims that God commanded us to do this ritual but Jesus made it very clear in Mark 7 that it was a man-made tradition which means that the Pharisees were elevating their rituals to the same status as God‘s word. The prayer goes like this “Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with Your commandments, and commanded us concerning the washing of the hands.”

Thank you, Kay, for your insight and closing prayer. It leads me to prayer also. Father, one with the Lord Jesus in whose name your children come to you, you are glorified. You know the spiritual battle waged by your children through faith in you. As you did for the Syrophoenician woman, hear the prayers of your children offered in faith for the deliverance of those under the influence of evil spirits. Provide for us as you will. You know the desires of our hearts. You know who delights in you. You know the groanings within us. You know everything. Interpret our cries, deliver us and others from evil, and provide for us in this fallen world as we journey home to you. Bring glory to your name in this and all things! Amen!

Hearing this during my lunchtime, I am reminded of Mark 6:4, which reads, “And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” If we are seeking to follow Jesus, we can expect to be misunderstood and disregarded even by those close to us. Yet, there in an indescribable joy and peace and confidence that comes even in the suffering and hurt. Thank you, Dan, for the reflection. May we abide in Christ daily, throughout the day, meditating on his word; so we can respond to the inevitable suffering we will experience as Christ leads us by his abiding Spirit.

Thank you for wonderful sermons and sharing about the spiritual phariseeism in this video. I had a student ministry pastor in my college years who made judgements on students’ parents whenever they visited their kids at church and talked to the pastor, and he was bold or blind enough to say his judgment to the kid. Imagine you just became a Christian and learned what is the most important thing in your life and hear your pastor go: “your father is not a follower of Jesus” or “your mother is not a TRUE believer of Christ.” He did that to me on my father once and imagine how much of pain that caused in me when I suddenly lost my dad shortly afterwards. God graciously let me know He loved him and was saved (his friend told me his testimony from his college years at his funeral), but his judgements were true nightmares to many kids in that church.

I just happened to hear this during my lunch break on February 2nd. Thanks for the encouraging, Scripture-rooted words, Brady. Mark 1:35 is an inspiration and call for every believer to begin the day early in Scripture-rooted prayer. I have found by the grace of God that if we desire this and do this - really commit our way to this - it will be like Mary in Luke 10:38-42. It will not be taken away from us.

Is not the underlying message of the NewTestament that everyone has "free will" and will be judged ultimately by God. Is this not evidenced by such statements as "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" or "render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's". And lastly did not Judas betray Jesus because he wanted a Zionistic here and now leader. Did not Christ pointedly responded to such expectations over and over that "His Kingdom is not of this World"?
