Lonzo Knowles of Chicago, Ill: We Ain't Nothing Without God, pt. 1 & 2
Spellbinding music from Lonzo Knowles of Chicago, IL. Thanks to Kevin Nutt for the A/V, who I believe received it from Peter Batchelor. I do not own a copy of this 45 & have no further information to offer about Mr. Knowles. If you are in a position to fix either or both of these circumstances, please be in touch.
Those who enjoy this song may also want to check out Bro. James Lide’s “Call God in Glory," which to me seems to come from a somewhat similar place: th-cam.com/video/J0ZqApr9_GU/w-d-xo.html

Spiritual Kings: I Want Two Wings
มุมมอง 968หลายเดือนก่อน
A longtime favorite that I saw years ago, couldn’t afford, & grabbed the audio & label pic in the hopes of finding a less expensive copy later on. That day has yet to come, but at least the music can be shared. I don’t know any details about the Spiritual Kings, who seem to have been from in or near Cleveland Ohio, but am thankfully very familiar with how it feels to be swept away by this soari...
Howard Tucker: Shout Together
มุมมอง 5142 หลายเดือนก่อน
I know very little about Howard Tucker. Presumably this uplifting 45 was issued on his own label. Produced by Harrison Smith, who if discogs is to be believed also had a hand in the Echoes of Zion's moving 78, Atlanta's Tragic Monday.
Preston Guilbeau & The Playboys: Opelousas Zydeco

Vibrant, old-school zydeco from Preston Guilbeau(x) (~1928-2001) & The Playboys. Hear also Booze & Women Blues (the other side of this outstanding 45) elsewhere on this channel. If any other recordings of this group exist, please do let me know.
The Superstars: My Life is Too Important (w/ Rev. Charles Ray Moncriffe Sr. & Rev. Charlie Jackson)
มุมมอง 1.3K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Even taking into consideration the small pressing quantities & strictly local / grassroots distribution of many gospel 45s, it was still quite a surprise that a seemingly previously "unknown" record with Rev. Charlie Jackson, a renowned singer & guitarist who cut a string of remarkable 45s on Booker Records out of New Orleans & his own Jackson Records imprint, surfaced a few years ago. The Supe...

G R S = Good Rocking Sam, born Herbert Sam c.1924 & active in the Houston zydeco scene for many years. Hear the other side of this hot 45 elsewhere on this channel. As mentioned there, I am curious if that may be Harold "Frenchy" Joseph on drums & if there are other releases on what I assume is Mr. Sam's private label? The condition of this 7" makes it clear that it has seen a lot of play over ...
Artee L. Philyaw: Long Journey to the Promised Land
มุมมอง 9294 หลายเดือนก่อน
A transfixing & beautiful song by Artee L. Philyaw (?-2008). From his obituary: “He was known as ‘Mr. Gospel Explosion’ on KIOU radio for many years. His singing career began at 5 years old & later became the leader of a Gospel group called the Echoes of Zion. He made several recordings & later CDs. Mr. Philyaw was known as an entrepreneur & had one of the first Black successful businesses call...
The Sand Mountain Playboys: Wild Bill
มุมมอง 6514 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hot, somewhat Middle Eastern tinged bluegrass recorded c.1961. It took 6 composers to wrangle together Wild Bill, including Marvin Downer, who went on to lead the Bluegrass Four. I would be interested to learn about other recordings in this vein from that time period, if anyone has any tips.
The Voices of Harmony: A Little Misusing
มุมมอง 3.3K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Another beauty by the Voices of Harmony, an especially fine group from the Baton Rouge area who first came to my attention since they often played on programs with Rev. Charlie Jackson. They recorded at least two outstanding 45s for the Herald Records / Herald Recording Studio custom label (& are not to be confused with Voices of Harmony groups from elsewhere, despite what is currently shown on...
Rubye Shelton & Sister Orr: The Hypocrite
มุมมอง 6685 หลายเดือนก่อน
Rubye Shelton (vocal) & Sister Orr (drums) seem to have been from Detroit or thereabouts & their music has echoes of the street corner / storefront gospel tradition. The Hypocrite is an impassioned song that calls out gossipers with flow & earthy humor. "'Have you heard about Sister Sally?' Tell that hypocrite to put his garbage in the alley!" Some years ago this song was posted on TH-cam with ...
Monroe "Guy" Jackson: Lonesome Home Blues
มุมมอง 6165 หลายเดือนก่อน
Monroe "Guy" Jackson (c.1904-1989) was a blues musician from north Mississippi who seems to have played mostly in & around that vicinity, though he apparently made a trip to NYC to play at Lincoln Center in 1985. In a preview for the NY Times, Robert Palmer wrote that Jackson was 77 years old at the time & “grew up in the northern Mississippi hill country, which nurtured a blues culture much di...
Bro. Thomas Congo Christians: No Weeping and None Like Thee
มุมมอง 1.9K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Unfortunately I know very little about Bro. Thomas Congo Christians. Another v/a 7" EP on Air has a song credited to Sister Lee Congo Christians, "Dark in Sin," which is also a stunner: beautiful lilting acoustic guitar & exquisite (multi-generational?) singing. Hear it elsewhere on youtube. I would certainly be grateful if anyone could provide more information about &/or songs by these deeply ...

Willard Artis “Blind Pete” Burrell (1936-2015) has a slim but spellbinding discography: 4 beautiful spirituals recorded at his home in Bogalusa, Louisiana, c.1969 by David Evans. 3 of these songs are on the all-time great Sorrow Come Pass Me Around comp (reissued on Dust-to-Digital). The other tune, a stunning version of I’ll Fly Away heard here, is on the Roosevelt Holts & Friends LP on Arhool...

G R S = Good Rocking Sam, born Herbert Sam c.1924. Active in the Houston zydeco scene for many years, his group also cut an unbelievably hot live recording, "They Call Me Good Rockin'," heard on Zydeco Vol. 1: The Early Years (Arhoolie). Wich song?
Wondering if you have any footage of The Anderson Sisters Gloster, Ms 92-97 and The Two Wings Gospel singers
Hello and thank you for your comment. Rev. Charlie Jackson’s collection had just the one video from Gloster that was filmed in 1987 and the unfortunately program didn’t include either of these groups. I am sorry that I am unable to help and wish you the best of luck with your search.
This is INCREDIBLE!!!
Might be sampled
Great track! 🙂

What a song! I love it! One of the (musically) hardest Gospel-songs I've heard.
He was born Nov. 17, 1936, and died Sept. 16, 2015, both in Bogalusa. He went blind as a teenager. That does appear to be him in the photo. He was remembered by the renowned poet Yusef Komunyakaa, who took inspiration from his peformances.
Incredible.
God DAMN! This one too, too splendid. I can’t hardly bear it! Thanks(!) so much for sharing.
Hey! that beautiful song deserves a cover. Never heard it before but it caught my ears from the very beginning

Black Crowes did a version of this.
Genius. I love rock ‘n’ roll but this was a sweet spot for jazz 50s early 60s.
I'm goong back to church
What a revelation this film clip is. The Reverend has an extraordinary stage presence and I love the sound he gets out of his guitar. More passionate Rock N' Roll in 3:43 minutes than in Led Zeppelin's entire back catalogue. Tip of the hat to the school for having a "Restoring Lost History" class and having the good taste to invite the Reverend. By the sound of it , the student's seem to be really getting to the Reverend's music
