Woodland Scenics / Scenic Ridge layout 2023!

Scenic Ridge project started in November 2022. Expanded the layout to 4X8 with two additional mainlines running around the entire layout with Kato track and Kato controlled turnouts. In this video I showcase the main build from start to finish with some shorter videos included of trains running. The Scenic Ridge was a great project and overall very happy with the results. Was also given inspira...

    Amazing work. I really like your addons. I am thinking about building another Scenic Ridge as my first one was decomissioned years ago. I used Kato track as well.

      The base is 4X8 (pink foam board) however the table or bench work are two of these: woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/item/ST4792 which worked great! They have adjustable feet for perfect leveling. My pink foam board on the top, 2 inch thick 4X8 hung over slightly however did the best I could to center on top of the benches. Since I used 2 inch foam board i didn't use any other plywood base under, didn't think it was needed as 2 inch foam board was sturdy enough and easy to drill holes through for switches, buildings with lights etc.

    As others mentioned, the Woodlands Scenic Kit seems to capture everything we want in an N scale layout. But i love how you also incorporated the dual line oval outside of the main layout. Great idea, thanks for sharing it. Also didn't realize Kato had their own version of the rail kit for the terrain.

    Hi. This is Daniel again. I have another question. How did you even wire the kato unit rack n scale track together on the woodland scenics Scenic Ridge layout? Again Great Job!

    • @corydevlin988
      @corydevlin988 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I used this katousa.com/track-plans-scenic-ridge/ to gather up what I needed to buy to build the scenic Ridge. This about 98% correct, there were a couple of spots I remember that needed different sizes however this will get you really close if you are building the Scenic Ridge and want to use Kato instead of the Atlas track package. As far as the additional track I added for the main line double track going around I played around with different radius curves until pieces lined up and I was happy. For wiring, I followed used the KATO power feeders at all 'turn out' points, so power was routed to every available track. I should have added more power feeders with the big double loop / track around the outside. Since I didn't I have some slight power drops at points around the Scenic Ridge. You will need lots of these if you plan to add / expand the Scenic Ridge as I did. www.amazon.com/Kato-KAT24818-Terminal-UniJoiner-Leads/dp/B0003K2U64/ref=asc_df_B0003K2U64/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693416028146&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11589333477449437228&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9021527&hvtargid=pla-441001244768&psc=1&mcid=d83529c96c473a42a4cc7ce26541d524&gad_source=1 And these to chain all the track power back to your controller www.walthers.com/3-way-extension-cord-unitrack

I had the extra space 4X8 to work with (Scenic Ridge 3X6) so wish I had done a staging yard and more siding track in general. Other than that, I am pretty happy with the Scenic Ridge project. That's again the great thing about Kato track, you can mix and match, snap things together until you find what fits and works best!

      Hi, thanks for the reply! Sorry for all the questions, but this is the very first layout I have ever attempted. Do you recall what pieces were replaced? I plan on only doing the main layout to start.

    • @corydevlin988
      @corydevlin988 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Shaymo78 No problem, yes I actually do remember. It was the section where the 186mm (7 5/16") Single Track Plate Girder Bridge was placed on the up and over section. If I recall, the plan called for 248mm (OOO) right before the bridge however when I used the S248, the bridge didn't line up well over the 'up and over', over the lower track. I thought maybe I did something wrong so instead, used a straight 186mm at at spot before the bridge and that seemed to line things up better from what I remember. All the other curves through the tunnels, and kato pieces worked perfectly. I would suggest having a few extra straight pieces, they will come in handy in general. Have a few 186mm and perhaps a few 124mm on hand. The nice thing about the Kato track is if something doesn't quite line up, you can easily pop in a different piece, like building a Lego set. As far as track power goes, I used the 24-818 Terminal UniJoiner. I would recommend that you use at least two of these for additional power throughout the layout. I believe the plan calls for only one? I would add a 2nd at some point 1/2 way through the track layout. If you do use a 2nd Terminal UniJoiner, get a Kato HO/N 24827 Unitrack 3-Way Extension Cord so you can plug the two power feeders into this, then you can run the main power line to your controller. I had to purchase many of these, as you need power on each track piece using those double crossovers. They are easy to use, and can be chained together over and over again depending on how many power feeders you are needing. Also something to consider, I added turnouts (left and right) within the Scenic Ridge plan (besides the mainlines going around the whole layout) If you look at the video, you will see my left turnout by the town area, right in front of the town and the right turnout just passed the bridge, the mining area before that track goes back through the tunnel. Those two turnouts added extra space to divert the trains, for industry areas or places to park train cars. So, if you like that idea, get an extra #6 Left and #6 Right turnout for those spots now, or leave space for them later. Again, don't think you will have too much trouble with the track plan, just be ready to swap out a few pieces if things are not lining up the way you want. Any other questions, please let me know! Thanks, Cory

Check out: @DeansNScaleTrains & @PaulsRailRoad These both helped me a ton when I built mine. They have videos detailing the whole build, section by section! I use DCC, I have the NCE powercab which is great! Keep me posted on the status. FYI, you might need more plaster cloth and earth undercoat. If you buy more earth undercoat, get a green bottle too, that was a game changer for me, mix of the tan and greeen before putting down turf really made the base layout look good!

    Hi Cory. I just started working on this layout over the weekend. After seeing this video, I've decided to steal your idea and make the layout 4x8 and add the extra double outer loop. I built the table top yesterday and I am struggling to see how you fit what you have on a 4' wide table. Is yours truly 4' wide? Love the video!

    • @corydevlin988
      @corydevlin988 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice!! Look forward to seeing it once it's up and running. One extra thing I wish I would have added was another siding track in the back of the layout to park some trains. I might go back and add another right or left turnout and have another siding running about 2 feet along side the outer track loop in the back. I think I have enough space to do that?

    • @corydevlin988
      @corydevlin988 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, also regarding the space of the layout. I built the Woodland Scenics Scenic Ridge 3x6. That still allowed me the space to connect the outer loops and double track with the extra space! Once i finished the track for the WS Scenic Ridge, I started connecting Kato pieces and turnouts to make those outer loops. Trial and error, and a few hours later finally got the pieces to connect. Are you using Kato track?

    • @corydevlin988
      @corydevlin988 ปีที่แล้ว

      4X8 is the space I have, let me know if you have any other questions on the Kato pieces I used!

    • @spleen1015a
      @spleen1015a ปีที่แล้ว

      I am using Kato track. I used SCARM to build the original layout as an exercise to learn how to use it. I took that layout, watched this video a few times to add the outer loop. I built my 4x8 tabletop yesterday and laid the layout foam from the Scenic Ridge package on it to see how it would fit, ect. With only 6 additional inches on the top and bottom, I wasn't sure there was enough room for the outer loop. Did you center your 3x6 layout on the 4x8 or is it pushed more towards the top? From the video, it looks like it may have started centered, but you eventually moved it up some to have more room on the bottom. I need to get the rest of the track. I have all of the track for the original layout. I need the 3 double switches and the rest of the track for the outer loop. So, it might be a couple of months before I have all of the track given the prices of the track.

    • @corydevlin988
      @corydevlin988 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just measured, and looks like I have about 7 1/2 inches from the front of the layout to where the outer track (of the double track) sits. I do recall having it 'centered' at first, but you're right, I might have had to move it or push it back towards the wall to get the double track to work, fit around the back of the layout. I will post another video this week with additional details on where the WS Scenic Ridge ends and where / how my double track fits in. Might be more helpful, but for sure, 4X8 worked with that Scenic Ridge sorta centered on the 4X8 space!@@spleen1015a
