The wingboots, as well as all other timed items, work on a specific timer. Every second on this timer on a specific countdown frame, any of these items (wingboots, glove, hourglass, ointment) will decrease as long as the game isn't paused, in a menu, in a dialogue, or in a door transition. However, the timer continues to run even while these events are happening. In order to extend the boots, the game is paused on this countdown frame so it doesn't decrease. By doing this repeatedly, quickly, and with good rhythm, the game can be stopped for a few frames to avoid decreasing the timer, then unpaused to continue playing between these seconds.

Top 5 in atmosphere, music, and arguably gameplay in the nes catalog. I still remember grinding for early death spell and large shield

@@bogledowdee955 and apparently this timer DECREASES the higher ranked you are. So the less you visit the church the better your timer will be. This game was really buggy.

Also, nes has only one background layer, but there are frequent places in this game where you to behind background, as if there were two background layers. Now idea how they did it.

I went into the "buy" menu first, forgetting I didn't have the money yet. I had to cancel out and sell wing boots first, then buy the Giant Blade. Just a mistake, is all.

@@bogledowdee955 oh wow. So there's a lot of room for improvement for the WR on this category. I love this game, and like the idea of trying to speedrun it, but I'm afraid the pausing trick to extend wing boots is too hard. How hard is it?

​@@LeoStaley There's definitely a lot of room for improvement in this category. Even the any% category has about 3 minutes difference between the human WR and the TAS. The pause extensions are definitely the hardest part of the run, but they aren't that important for getting good times either. Learning how to speedrun this game is actually pretty friendly- there's a lot of easy ways to do parts and safety strategies, and improving your time is mostly just about removing the safeties and minimizing mistakes. The hard tricks like pause extending doesn't have to come until you're already getting really competitive times.

I was like 9, didn't know english too, but I remember I ended it. I played it again as an adult and was surprised I could beat the game as a kid.

I was 12 and I couldn't read English but i learned to use a dictionary from then on. Good times.

Sadly no- I've been looking at ways to have input display with Nestopia, but haven't really found anything I liked. In the end I'll probably start doing recordings again with FCEUX to have that display, though I don't like it as an emulator as much since it seems to sputter more often than Nestopia does

The password thing I think was just nerves at that point in a PB. Just in casual play I've always gone for deathless, so actually getting passwords is pretty new for me. As for the movement, that's mostly from the many years I've played this game growing up. It's only very recently I decided to start actually learning routes and trying to speedrun it for real. Sub 30 will likely come once I clean things up in branch and onward, get a bit more A button manipulation worked in, and get practicing on the wing boot pausing.

Before I saw this comment, I actually recorded my second run in FCEUX, which is currently even quieter. I'll look into increasing it for the future. As for streaming, I don't actually stream anywhere, just record offline.
