Why You Should Read Mitsuru Adachi
มุมมอง 6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Mitsuru Adachi is a Japanese mangaka with an over 40 year long career. His works have been extremely successful in Japan and have garnered him popularity and praise in his home country. However, he is scarcely heard of in the English anime and manga fandom. In this video, I hope to present what makes him such a great mangaka to convince you to give his works a shot.
Incredible!
Eureka Seven was a show that I've watched numerous times, and I'm rewatching again. The only issue I have with the series is that there were attempts to continue what should have been left alone.
I was really impressed by how comprehensive this video was. You really tackled the main concept in an impressive number of ways. Your passion for the medium really comes through.
Thanks! I was really proud with the way the video turned out, and I'm glad my passion came through from it.
I have been convinced! I will be reading Adachi.
Hey just wanted to say great job with the essay, I enjoyed hearing your thorough and thoughtful takes.
Thanks for listening!
Honestly this anime deserves to be in the same pantheon with such hyper popular giants of the genre like Evangelion or TTTGL Alas, it is still pretty hidden gem, but oooh boy what a gem it is...
Thank you for this video. It's about as complete a breakdown of Eureka Seven as I've seen which made it essential viewing for me considering Eureka Seven is my favorite anime and hearing you list all the things I love about it and in detail was beyond gratifying. It's a shame that future installments of the franchise veered very far off track and perhaps prevented new fans finding and falling in love with the original but I'm happy to see many people still love it and give deep thought to its qualities and values.
Thanks! It's great hearing that from someone who's clearly a big fan of the series. If you think I did justice to this series then it was well worth making this video.
Honestly I don’t even want to touch any sequels or rebuild of Eureka. Because original’s story was pretty much ended perfectly and had not really much loose ends, so any retellings or continuations will ruin it no matter if they good or bad
@@Aurinor agreed, it wrapped up as well as it possibly could with a feel-good ending that I think lived up to the messages the story was sharing with us.
Which Adachi Mangas are available in English?
Great video! Adachi is my favorite mangaka of all time, i just love how he is so consistently good and it looks like the more you get to known his mangas, the more you enjoy them.
My favorite Mangaka!!! I wish America would get more of his manga. Every time I go back to Japan I buy his series and bring them back.
The amount of times I exclaimed "Yes! Exactly!" when watching this video lmao
That's great haha. Makes me happy that people had similar thoughts about the show.
Thank you for making me cry with this video, this anime was my childhood and has influenced a lot of what I believe love is, thank you thank you so much
I'm incredibly grateful that I was able to convey the message of this show in a way that brought out those memories and emotions. Thank you.
Short Game: Mitsuru Adachi's Baseball Short Story Collection is coming to the US in 2025!
One of my favourite shows of all time! I rewatch it every couple years, so cool to see someone still making content on E7! Loved the video man! Time to go rewatch it again
Thanks! Hope you found something to appreciate about this series. This video was inspired after a rewatch because of how much I was able to pick up on the 2nd time through.
What’s crazy about this show, is that the characters change and because they change they change each other as well. Not in a forced way, but in one that feels completely natural. Like the growth is circular in a way
Good point! The show uses its ensemble cast really well. I think your point about how the characters change each other is most evident with Renton and Eureka's relationship, but its also interesting to see how Renton influenced Holland, early on they brought out each others immature side but when Renton returned a more mature person it made Holland realize he had to step-up and let go of his ego for his and Eureka's sake and future of planet.
I absolutely love this review you hit on so many topics and I think you handled each one so well. Eureka 7 was one of my first and also one of my favorite shows! Thank you for doing this review!
Thank you for watching! That really means a lot that you got something out of this video.
Adachi is my all time favorite!
No translation of H2 in english or german 😭
We all need love like this
This is a great video essay.
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Eureka Seven is an anime made by people that clearly understand the "mecha" element/genre, they were part of Sunrise, which produced Gundam, As such, there are a lot of homages and references to 70s and 80s mechas (no, not evangelion, eva is yet another homage to the same shows), I found that the more I watch of Sunrise "mecha anime", the more I learn and connect with Eureka Seven, I would say that the series is also meant to serve as an introduction to the genre, It's fascinating to dig deeper on the rabbit hole of where each thing comes from, in particular characters and arcs like Charles and ray, as well as Renton leaving the gekko go are a direct homage to the original Gundam 0079, something that we now take as "another trope" but that started there in 1979, all the way to things like the Spec 3 making a reference to the Gunbuster, it's highly rewarding to watch other mecha anime that inspired E7 (and seeing how now Eureka Seven inspired other things like AC6 story), It complements a lot of the analysis and gives even more insight into the worldbuilding and aesthetic choices, I would recommend it to all of the fans, the genre is often misunderstood with "transformers" and "megazords" but Eureka Seven is the embodiment of the Mecha genre, it can be any kind of story, and more often than not, it also involves a lot of drama, psychology, different Ideals and an anti-war message
Great comment! I mention a bit of E7's place in the history of mecha and I do think it stands as one of the best the genre has to offer, but you're absolutely right with about how much it owes a lot of its aspects to the series that came before.
Sunday x Magazine brought me here 🍪
Oh is that a fighting game featuring Shounen Sunday characters? Does it feature any of Adachi's characters?
@@riz-ytb well the first and third of its trilogy cuz u got Sunday x Magazine Nettou Dream Nine (baseball game) Sunday vs Magazine (fighting game) Sunday and Magazine White Comic (rpg game)
That's cool, sometimes I forget that some of Adachi's series have a lot of franchise deals and crossovers like this over in Japan.
Nice video, watching this reminded me of some nice memories from back in the day. Thank you.
Fantastic Video.
Nine and Wakadaisho in the 70s. Touch, Hiatari Ryoukou, and Miyuki in the 80s. And H2 and Slow Step in the 90s. that's is my favorite.
I could never stop reading Adachi
The best breakdown of the og series. This show is underrated as a Mecha anime.
Thanks! And I agree, E7 really deserves to be talked about among the best the genre has to offer.
i'm such a huge fan! i had bought a Uniqlo tshirt of his work 15 years ago in Tokyo (no idea where it is now). I got a tattoo of one of his characters, but it turns out to be on a place where my eyes can never see it straight 😭
Adachi Mitsuru's work won't fly in this cultural climate in the west. Too many will complain LGBTQZBVTJI representation fan service sexism blah blah blah.
I'm way behind, having dropped off of reading his work around the time he started _Cross Game._ Before that I tried to find everything else he did. _Katsu!_ is probably my favourite of his works, just ahead of _H2._
What's the first clip from?
Its a show called Blue Blazes. Funny and interesting, would reccommend.
This anime means a lot to me,So cool to see people still making content about E7
I found a coppy of short program volume 2 in a second hand book shop in the uk a few weeks ago. Looking online after reading it i saw there was only 1 other coppy for sale in the whole country. It's really disappointing that more people can't appreciate this amazing manga
11:!5 - I would argue that the major imporance of Ray/Charles isn't that Renton is allowed comfort but, in contrast to the Gekko, is exposed to a relatively healthy and stable relationship that also is capable of handling him of being a kid in that the expectations that R&C had of him were appropriate for his age/experience and taking the time to explain and be compassionate of him when he didn't understand things right away. It gives Renton the space to grow and understand the world around him. It highlights Holland's failure as a mentor to Renton, always meeting his ignorance with scorn and anger instead of understanding that Renton doesn't and cannot mean anything that he hurtful things he says very deeply because he just doesn't know enough. Although he was a bratty kid who didn't understand anything while on the Gekko, Holland's actions only made that behaviour worse driving him to abandon the Gekko. Furthermore, I would also check for examples of how R&C's more healthy relationship dynamic would have been echoed in Renton and Eureka's relationship later in the series. I haven't seen the series in maybe 10 years or so, but I know that in my own life seeing just a coulple of stable couples does a lot to teach you how to approach your own relationships in a better way, and so that's something I'd look for more evidence of.
Thanks for the thorough comment :) Writing the script for this I was thinking of having a section for Ray and Charles, but I wasn't really sure how to read them. On one hand, they definitely had a positive influence on Renton, presenting themselves as much more caring and understanding parental figures as well as being a loving couple which Renton explicitly wants to emulate with Eureka. But, I felt at times the show was presenting their dysfunctional aspects as well. Ray's malice towards Eureka being probably the most obvious thing as well as her downward spiral after Charles death. But there's also Charles competitiveness with Holland, remember that he only accepted the job for the Gekko when Dewey told him he could settle the score with Holland. So it seemed like their relationship was good for the most part but there were these certain defects in their character that they never addressed in their relationship which ultimately lead to their deaths. So I have to say I'm overall not sure, which is why I didnt include them in the analysis altogether.
That's definitely a very interesting and in-depth analysis of such an underrated gem of an anime series like Eureka 7. Though I'm also curious to hear what you think of all the other Eureka media that came afterwards, like the manga, the sequel series and the movies, because they seem to contradict or undo some of themes or ideas the main show presents, frankly I haven't enjoyed any of them like I did the original series, it just felt that none of them had the same positive energy and passion behind it as the original. Not sure that's due to corporate interference, or the creator/s of Eureka having a change of mind/heart or something else entirely, the problem sometimes with Japanese media when they explore esoteric concepts,or use religious and philosophical symbolism it's not always very clear whether those elements are there for aesthetic or visual reasons (like Hideaki Anno said about a lot of the Christian symbolism in Eva) or is it there to actually convey something important to understanding the story and its themes...which makes hard when things change dramatically to know exacly why it happened.
Thanks for the compliments and in-depth comment :) . So right off the bat, I have not checked out any of the other media the franchise has released. The bits of information I have heard, particularly about the sequel series and movies, have convinced me to steer clear from most of them. This is not the first time a franchise I enjoy get ruined due to follow-up or spin-off material and I wasn't about to go explore how they ruined it. The 50 episode show is all I go on for this analysis, if there's anything that seems contradictory to the themes I explore here in other additions to the franchise then that's a shame but that does not take away from what I believe this show was trying to communicate. I've looked into a bunch of interviews relating to this show from the creators but overall I wouldn't put too much stock on what they've said. Ultimately the final product is what we're left with to decipher and try to find the thematic throughline between the different elements of the work. As you brought up Anno, I think that's a case where you really have to take his words with a grain of salt, as it seems obvious to me that the symbolism in Eva was not just an afterthought as his quotes imply. Even if the Christian symbolism was primarily for aesthetic purposes, the choice of which specific Christian symbols and names to use wasn't just a dice roll but clearly had thought to how it would fit in each specific scene of the story. So I don't think the works outside of the original E7 TV series should really effect how you interpret it, especially since the original is by all accounts completely self-contained as a story and the other works seem to just want capitalize on the franchise and not to stay faithful to its original story.
@@riz-ytb Good points, I do feel conflicted about continuations of really good anime shows, part of me likes the fact the story concluded in satisfactory way, but part of me also wants to know what will happen in the future to those characters I spent dozens of episodes/chapters intimately following them as they mature and evolve. Problem as we see with Euerka's extended material is that it's not guaranteed at all that the future events and additions to the story/universe won't ruin the progress those characters achieved or muddy and contradict the themes of the original story, most of the time sadly that's the case...suppose I have to learn the lesson from the show to just "move on".
@@AscendantStoicYeah,the problems with Eureka sequels, and movies is that they usually ruin the themes of the original series, just so it can be more like EVO. The new movies literally decanonises the second part of the og series 😂.
Fantastic analysis of manga, nicely done.

This video encouraged me to rewatch the series for the first time since 2010. I remember i downloaded the OST on my iPod cause it was beautiful back in the day. Playing a wish upon a star during this vid and hearing it for the first time in over a decade brought me chills.
That's awesome. I actually didn't fully appreciate the OST until I edited this video, looking for some music to go along with it. Its got such a great variety of tracks.
It’s criminal he’s not better known in America. Touch is brilliant. Maybe because his work mostly lacks a fantasy aspect. But his work gives me such nostalgia!
Thank you thank you! Just subscribed 💕
Glad you enjoyed :) Thanks for the sub
Do you have social media ?
No, at least not one I use regularly, but I'll setup something for people to contact me soon
@@riz-ytb okay if you remember, keep me updated pls. I wanted to do an eureka seven breakdown myself and I’d love to reference this video if possible of course fully credited!
For sure! I'll reply here again when I've set it up. Pursue that breakdown, I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff I haven't covered from the show and would love to see more people's take on them.
My favourite mangaka for sure.
Best review of this show hands down...
Thanks! I tried to cover as much as I could that I felt were core to the show.
Great video
This was an excellent video dude. You nailed each point with precision and clarity that helped me parse the show and what I really enjoy about better. Thank you! And keep up the good work
Thanks :) Hearing that makes the time I spent writing and editing this video worth it.
It is SO amazing to see Eureka Seven in this day in age and I really enjoyed this video!! 🔥
Thank you, it was a big project for me so that means a lot. Keep up with your videos too, lets hope E7 isnt forgotten.
I love Mitsuru Adachi, he's my third favourite mangaka after Makoto Ojiro and Taiyou Matsumoto. The first act of Touch is probably the greatest stretch of manga volumes ever written. There is so much weight and subtext in pretty much every panel, and his characters feel so believable. I love how empathetic all of his main characters are and how they try to treat other people kindly, even if they sometimes harbor negative feelings. However, my personal favourite of his manga is Cross Game. It fixes a lot of the problems I had with the last 2/3 of Touch. It's also similar in structure, events and characters to that section, that it almost seems intentional, though maybe I'm just overthinking it. Aoba is very underrated and one of my favourite characters in all of manga. A great supportive heroine (even if she has trouble expressing it lol), and one of the best portrayals of someone who hasn't moved on from a tragic event that I've seen. The scene at the end with Kou where she cries is very cathartic. Some people make fun of Adachi's art for being lazy and reusing the same character designs, but I think he's one of the best manga artists. There may be more technically skilled illustrators (Inoue for example) but I think his art is much better suited to manga and for me he's the king of visual storytelling. I hope we get an English release of Touch one day. Thank you for the video!
> The first act of Touch is probably the greatest stretch of manga volumes ever written. Completely agree :) Every time I've gone back to read Touch I'm blown away by those early volumes. Its a masterstroke of storytelling in the medium. > However, my personal favourite of his manga is Cross Game. Same haha, its the series that introduced me to Adachi and during a rough period in my life, so it's got a special place in my heart. My personal favorite character from the story is Azuma, someone at the beginning caught up in the goal he set out, but from the influence of the other characters gradually opens up and appreciates the present joys in life and the people around him. > It fixes a lot of the problems I had with the last 2/3 of Touch. I also think Cross Game works as a better spiritual successor to Touch than ironically Mix. > Some people make fun of Adachi's art for being lazy and reusing the same character designs One of those people is Adachi himself xD. But yes his designs while re-used, are just so effectively utilized. Adachi is a great illustrator by any respect and I think if you would give him time he can pull off just as detailed artwork as the best out there, but his greatest strength comes from how every element serves the purpose of a whole. In Adachi's best, there's no one panel, no one line of dialogue that feels insignificant. Mangakas, and all sequential artists, have a great deal of freedom in what they can put on a page, but it takes a master of the craft to pick out the essential elements from that infinite array of choices before them, and Adachi is one of those masters. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
I've recently 'been getting into Adachi's work ! I'm starting off with H2's anime , do you know which one could go next? Also , are there many differences between the manga and adaptations?
I haven't watched the H2 anime so I can't speak for it, from what I can tell it doesn't have major differences but hasn't fully adapted it, so you may need to read the manga if you wanna get the full story. Overall, though I discovered Adachi through the Cross Game anime, his anime adaptation's don't capture the masterful flow he has in his manga in my opinion. Though I wouldn't dissuade anyone from watching them as they are well regarded. If you choose to watch something after H2 I'd reccommend the Touch anime. If you're looking to get into his manga any of his major series would work but I'd say check out the H2 manga but if that's too long check out Rough or Katsu!
@@riz-ytb Got it ! I don't really mind if it's too long honestly, since I honestly wanna' get really into the whole Mitsuru Adachi experience ! Thank ya' !
I wholeheartedly recommend Rough to everyone. I like many of Atachi's work but Rough hits differently
I've recently got interested in many of his anime works and recently finished both anime series Touch and Hiatari Ryoko! Since then, I have considered buying his manga. I recently went on a california trip to a Japanese bookstore and saw H2 and Touch on the shelves. Unfortuantely they were incomplete but I remember just flipping through a couple of pages and reading the dialog and story for the first time on Touch. I was actually heavily invested for the 10 minutes I tried the series, and now, I want it!
Yup, I remember reading his manga for the first time and being so engrossed right away as well. He pulls you into his stories really effectively.
I love the way the characters are drawn - not over the top, just simple and effective
Yup. Adachi draws them with a good balance of anime-esque features and expressions, and realistic detail and proportions.
