Slice of Life in the Early 20th Century Divisoria
In the bygone days, Divisoria, especially the eponymous Calle Azcarraga or Paseo de Azcarraga, was a jungle of trade and commerce in Manila in that era. Imagine nosy shopkeepers enticing prospective buyers with an array of goods, hagglers running for the best price for their choices, and brawny men loading and off-loading cartful of goods from near and far.
Behind the busy reputation of the place, the Manileños continue to earn a living, to live and to love! Throngs of hopefuls were brought by the day to Divisoria with the ever dependable calesa or tartanilla. Itinerant vendors start peddling their wares even before the sun is up. Their relatives enjoy the day with a dance of skill - actually, balancing large claypots on head - which they learned from Pangasinense relatives. The binata or the bagong-tao pursues a love interest, a gem of a dalaga who makes her decision known through a folding fan, a pamaypay so-called. A spurned or forsaken lover squalls to the heavens a kundiman of the broken-hearted, pleading answers as what fate awaits for him/her? And then life goes on.
