Great work
Great job
You have any idea how many cigars and boots it’s gonna take to get that patina back?
This 100% helped
20/1000 of an inch higher bro 😂 2/100, or 1/50th... You measure distance unfathomably lol
My thoughts exactly haha
@@mat-gx6ju hahaha right! "Your next turn is in 7/16ths of a mile"
Saint Clair
It's called criss cross apple sauce
I assume this can’t be done with engineered floor. (I had some replaced and weaved in only to find out the new boards were about 1 mm taller than the old ones. )
Genuine question from a non-professional - is doing this going to fix the issue or would this ultimately end up being misaligned again eventually?
It’ll fix it. It wasn’t fixed right the last time there was water damage I’m assuming.
Actually its more like 32 thousands of an inch. I can tell by that one long dark grain in the middle!
32 is a bit much
Amazing video. Thank you soo much.. Where can i purchase some of the paint striper you used for the hand rail (Circa 1850)
Thanks for watching! I bought that from Home Depot.
I agree
Oh it looks like it has all of the original hardware. Are they planning on keeping that as a feature?
Dumb waiter
Are these just for hardwood floors or can’t they be used on decks as well?
not for decks
I would have just wiped it with lacquer, thinner.
Thanks
No problem
🎉
Do you stain in just 1 coat? Does it have to have 2 coats at the end? I'm using water based. Thanks
I only apply one coat of oil based penetrating wood stain for floors, unless the customer has specifically requested a different stain. Water based stain is very difficult to apply as the dry time is virtually immediate making transition lines difficult to blend out. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this detailed video, we have recently installed new pine floors, in some areas we have begun the staining process, however the stain is not the same color as it should be throughout the space, we now have to re sand the floors, in doing so do we refill with wood filler?
You can apply filler if you like, and it should be a stainable wood filler so it'll all look the same. Thank you for watching!
Admirable that they didn't just leave..
Just get a flip
Top 2 youtuber and you're not second. Also love the long videos, very relaxing
I would think 80gr
Me as well.
We just tried using it it doesn’t work for shit it we used it on basic wall paint and the paint barely flakes off we are also really disappointed
Exactly!!
Why not just pull up the transition and put it back after? It would be no more than an extra 10 minutes work surely.
haha I thought I was the only one who thought to use Tack cloth! haha
Thanks for watching!
Next time please turn off the sander when recording, it's really hard to listen.
Sorry about the noise, that was John using ShopVac, or sanding!!!
Cool playlist 👏
🙏 thank you
Thanks 😁
Awesome video, good job communicating all the little nuances that go into hardwood sanding.I feel like I got three years experience just from watching this.
Thank you 😊
Just do better on your final cut
Oh, it’s that easy! That’s misleading.
No lap marks?
None!
Yeah so water based doesn't have time to dry to the side of a bucket then attach to the roller. Even doing say a 100sqm that never happens.
.
First of all: Bummer for anyone who needs to escape from the basement should the stairs be inaccessible. Possible life or death situation. Second, I coat the nosings first then coat from the step (or two) above. Massive pain in the arse, yes. Takes 2x as long than the usual way.
Redinishing floors today. So worried about using a drum sander. Still no definite on whether the floor is quarter sawn pine or fir. Should I stain? Or will it be blotchy? If I just use poly, do I use oil or water based? I do not want shiny floors, something satin would be nice. Thank you for your help!
Fir or pine don’t necessarily require a stain as they look good with just an oil or water based finish, although I have stained pine in the past. There is a likelihood of blotchy spots occurring. Also pine tends to have naturally occurring yellow or green streaks throughout that won’t absorb stain. Oil based finish will amber over time while water based finish will look exactly the same as floor after sanding. Best to test a small section to see what you prefer. Thank you for watching and good luck👍
They leave huge marks even if you do it properly
42:45 you stated 220 surface finish. That meant you sanded with 220 after final coat of polyurethane had dried? Correct?
The final screen sand is 220 grit. Then the last coat of urethane is applied. No screen sanding after last coat unless you're planning on additional coats. Thank you for watching!
I am planning on applying a water based poly to my hard wood floor. It was done several years back and I am hoping to add some extra protection and refresh the look. Is it necessary to sand first or can I just apply it directly to the clean floor? Thank you!
Best to screen sand it first. You can do it manually with 180, or 220 grit screen (same as drywall screen), or rent a buffing machine, round or rectangular 180, or 220 screen. Vacuum, wipe then apply the finish. Good luck and thanks for watching 👍
I pour lines the same way, much faster, no drips everywhere from dunking, gets a consistent spread. With loba you can absolutely do this, bona is a little pickier about pouring on bare wood
Do i absolutely have to buff the floor after the final sand?
Final sand is 80 grit orbital, then stain, or finish.
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101 I saw you use the square sander machine which is a buffer correct? I didn't buff before staining will that cause any significant issue
My last sanding with the drum sander was 100 grit. Should I have buffed after or was the 100 grit enough of a substitute for a buff
If you're running the drum handle properly you wouldn't have those lines
No buff before first coat of stain?
80 grit orbital sand, vacuum, tack, then stain!
After the first day, would real wood stairs / railing with this water-based poly feel rough to the touch (like rough wood feeling)? Im wondering if it's because it's a Bona poly with Satin finish? Rather than say a semi-gloss that would feel smoother?
Yes after one coat the grain will raise. I don’t know what your final sanding grit was prior to finishing. I orbital sand to 80 grit, you can go to 100 grit if you prefer, then apply first coat. After 1st coat it might feel coarse. Use 180 or 220 grit screen to abrade the coarseness then vacuum and wipe floor. It should be smooth as glass and ready for your 2nd coat. The satin or semigloss shouldn’t be any different. I recommend a minimum 3 coats, 4 if you like. After 2nd coat the floor should only require spot sanding if any rough surfaces are present or you can lightly 220 grit screen sand the entire floor, vacuum and wipe prior to additional coats. Thanks for watching and good luck!
I agree. Useless on wood door!
Exactly
AMAZING 🤩
👍Thanks for watching!
Beautiful job! Wow 🤩
Thank you! Cheers!
I use to do the pour thing but realized it goes between gaps causing too much waste. I never had issues dipping into the bucket which is a method that is also taught by Loba and other manufacturer.
At 8:09 that’s incorrect, let the handle be lose, the machine will level out. You don’t want to be pushing up or down just putting pressure to move in either direction. You have the handle pole tightened
What stain do you use, or what grit or method to you sand to, to get the grain to contrast like this? Seems people get the whole floor too dark to show grain, or the whole floor is lighter including the grain so it doesn't show as much. Type of wood is white oak.
I believe this was Minwax Dark Walnut
Too much talking and no demonstration
