Mid 2007 iMac Upgrade. MAX Specs,SSD,And Catalina!
มุมมอง 103K4 ปีที่แล้ว
A quick video of how I installed a T9500 core 2 duo in my mid 2007 20 inch iMac in order to run the newest OS, Catalina. I bought the processor used on amazon as well as 6 GB of DDR2 RAM and the 250 GB ssd to increase storage a bit and speed thing up a bit. Total cost of parts $209 It makes a great secondary media desktop aside my main pc. It works great for music production even in 2020!

      People literally throw old laptops out just because of faulty hard drives and in the case of this one, it’s literally one Philips screw to yoink out the drive and toss in a ssd. Hell, even if you buy a new laptop, ssds are so cheap now that you still might as well fix the old one for a back up. Linux is free. The ssd upgrade alone is always the biggest performance booster for any computer that came stock with a HDD. This computer was perfectly usable with the 4gigs of ram and i5 it came with. It just needed a ssd!!!

    • @theartshow1476
      @theartshow1476 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching. The answer to your question is NO, this laptop will not take the quad core i7 740. Only the dual core i7 640 or i7 620, which are still capable of running 4 threads at once thanks to hyper threading tech. I could be mistaken, but I think it’s the larger model, the T510, that utilized the quad core processors like the i7 740qm you mentioned. If you have the same model as mine, it’s dual core only.

I looked into it well before actually purchasing the i7 640. all information I have found online says that any t410 model, with or without dedicated graphics, cannot utilize the quad cores. I do remember reading somewhere that the larger t510 model could be upgraded to a quad core, but didn’t ever come stock with them. I could be wrong though. • @theartshow1476
      @theartshow1476 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@maikelpeeters7328 I mean I did the swap and tested it myself dude. The i7 absolutely made this computer faster. It is a bit warmer too. battery life is a bit less. But no, the i5 will absolutely not run faster don’t be silly. Throttling mostly occurs under a consistent heavy load like rendering a video or moving large files from drive to drive. It’s not like the cpu just runs on maximum overdrive at all times. And yea I tested that too, rendering a 5 min video on the i7 took about 3/4 the time that the i5 took to render the same video. definitely faster. Not by a huge margin or anything. The i5 was still usable, but noticeably hitched from time to time. These Thinkpads had different i5s too. You are probably referring to the i5 m540, which performance wise has very little difference to the i7 640. Mine had the i5m520. The slowest cpu these computers came with. They wouldn’t have sold the i7 models at a premium if there wasn’t a difference. And yeah they sold these with i7 models at a higher price when they were new. The biggest difference between these 2 cpus is cache size, which I believe is mostly the reason the i7 is faster. Even if you somehow were to lock these cpus at 2.9 gigaherts with proper cooling installed, the i7 would be inherently faster because of its larger cache size. Even when throttling down the i7 would be consistently faster because 2.9ghz is its base frequency. 2.93 is the i5s max boost frequency. Also these cpus have the same tdp rating of 35w so there isn’t any reason the stock cooler wouldn’t be sufficient enough.

    • @theartshow1476
      @theartshow1476 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

Honestly, I’ve figured out that these older Mac’s absolutely kill it with linux installed. Especially if it’s just a shop computer. Also you can just skip the cpu swap if you decide to install Linux, because the cpu swap is only needed if you want to update to a more modern macOS, and doesn’t really give any noticeable performance gain. I don’t recommend patching newer macOS to older machines anymore because it really bogs them down performance wise. Deciding on using "Intel Core 2 Extreme X7900" vs "Intel Core 2 Duo t9500" CPU for 7.1 iMac upgrade. Any thoughts from anyone? X7900 has higher frequency 2.8 GHz vs t9500 2.6 Ghz, BUT t9500 has greater L2 cache of 6MB vs X7900 4MB. Overclocking is not intended. I can install either CPU so price not a hinderance. Not sure about the x7900, but the t9500 is penryn based which allowed me to utilize a newer operating system via the dosdude1 patch. But if you are running windows that probably isn’t even a problem for you. However, Performance wise I would say for windows the extra cache might do you good. Windows isn’t all that optimized very well for some of these older laptop cpus so the extra cache might benefit you. 2.8 ghz vs 2.6ghz just isn’t a very big difference.

I also do a lot of emulation on it such as Redream, Dolphin, PCSX2, ePSXe, and PPSSPP without much issue beyond the software itself. I can say that this works completely. Now the early 2009 iMac model I just tried to work on after the 2007 project finished was much more of a headache. I tried installing an Intel QX9300 Quad core Penryn CPU on that 2009 iMac to replace its Duo Core Penryn CPU and although it fit into the slot perfectly the power supply unit was insufficient to use it. So that one is still running the 2.8 Ghz Duo Core CPU it came with and 8 GB of DDR3 RAM with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on a 1 TB SATA SSD. I don't recommend Windows 8.1 or Windows 10/11 for either of these iMac models for anyone reading this, stay with Windows 7 x64 editions, considering the CPUs are Duo Core in both machines those newer mobile/touch focused OS run poorly on them. I am very happy with them and what they can do though especially with the emulator capacity they have. Good luck with your modding hope this helps you and others

    Be advised these extreme CPU upgrades CAN make the WiFi useless. Up grades to 2.4 gHz. T8300 and 2.8 gHz. X900 CPU's do not chance losing you the WiFi. $15 and $40 pd. on eBay.... A helluva lot of WORK! 2+ hours.... IF all goes well, J.C.

      Yes it’s important to check what kind of Broadcom card is installed before performing this upgrade. I didn’t have any problems using WiFi after the upgrade, but I’ve heard from many people that they have.

    Hi!! I have an imac early 2008, and I have 2x2gb 667 of ram, if i put the same or more gb but with more MHz will it work or automatically limits to 667? If not, which is the best configuration that can accept? THX

      Hello! I’m pretty sure the early 2008 can utilize pc2 6400 ddr2 ram up to 800 MHz speeds. And I believe you can get 4x2gb sticks for a total of 6 gigs of ram, just like I did in this video for my 2007 model, Even though Apple says it will only utilize 4 gigs of ram.

      You are correct. Mac OS 10.11 El Capitan is indeed the latest os this iMac supports with stock hardware.
