una versione orribile
This performance will go down in the history books.
And the poem in the middle.... "Winter Stars" by Sarah Teasdale.... "I went out a night, alone......"
Kurt and Carla have very similar Swedish-American backgrounds.
OK, Carla is a hip name drop (and image--that hair!), but this is another simple melody--like all the others since folk and country outsold Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, and Jimmy Van Heusen. No worse than Sinatra's descending to "Strangers in the Night" and his final Duets disasters (his best-selling albums). His best recorded work? 1940 to 1965,
Fun fact. The pianist on the original version was Larry Willis (R.I.P). His nickname was Lawns. That's why she named the song "Lawns". Cheers
One of the best version of the wonderful track of Carla Bley. GREAT Kurt Elling
The best version of the wonderful track of Carla Bley. GREAT Kurt Elling
Emotional....l'm aching inside, memories of loved ones. ❤
Carla Bley has written a masterpiece, and Elling’s lyrics are icing on the cake. Wonderful performance.
Oh my God! This is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long time. I'm not that familiar with Carla Bley's work, but her music and Elling's lyrics (with an assist from Sarah Teasdale) lift this sone to majestic heights without ever straining or wrenching. Goodness! Simply lovely!!!
Glad you mentioned Sarah Teasdale...
Clark Sommers... great bass player
This is heavy xxxxxxx ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was at this concert. It was a really nice time for me, and an introduction to the Netherlands en de nederlandse taal. Ik ben sinds deze taal aan het leren. And I've been back to Rotterdam, the Hague, Nijmegen and plan to go again.
Winter Stars BY SARA TEASDALE I went out at night alone; The young blood flowing beyond the sea Seemed to have drenched my spirit’s wings- I bore my sorrow heavily. But when I lifted up my head From shadows shaken on the snow, I saw Orion in the east Burn steadily as long ago. From windows in my father’s house, Dreaming my dreams on winter nights, I watched Orion as a girl Above another city’s lights. Years go, dreams go, and youth goes too, The world’s heart breaks beneath its wars, All things are changed, save in the east The faithful beauty of the stars. why not give it credit -
Beautiful
Great, relaxed voice!
Kurt has so many beautiful varied performances of this gem

Especial version musical Kurt Elling y Quinteto con la pianista Carla Bley
Superb~! So beautiful lawns !
Is it possible to name the players?
I am impressed with the vocals and the trumpet player. As a matter of fact the other musicians are fantastic. Great work Carla Bley.
My first hearing of music from Carla Bley.
Often I don't care for his lyrics but he hits it out of the park with this tune. Well done.
what is that ridiculous " hitting a block of wood " for . Ruins it and a great trumpet solo
It's called a "side stick" or "rim shot" and is played by placing the tip of the stick directly on the skin of the snare and hitting/"snapping" the rim of the snare with the "blunt end" of the stick. So it's more "hitting a ring of metal" LOL! You'll hear it used in many jazz tunes: whether it's suitable in a lyrical tune like _Lawns_ is a matter for debate. Personally, I think it's just being played too loudly (or, the snare mic. is making it *sound* really loud, in which case it's the PA engineer's fault for not turning that mic. DOWN for this one tune).
Yes, I’m a drummer and personally would have chosen to complement this arrangement with a soft Tom pattern using mallets.
@@robertphillips2492 I would go with your choice, sir! I've since watched a video of another performance of this, and it seems that this drummer is VERY heavy on his rimshots; or, as I mentioned, it's a bad mix. Then again, both videos are presumably camcorder or phone jobs, so the audio is a nasty blend of direct pickup plus the PA sound, which rarely works well.
I would have preferred brushes...but it doesn't detract from a wonderful performance.
@@robertphillips2492je suis d'accord le batteur pas cohérent par moment il ce cherche bref manque d idées...
One of my favorites of Kurt's. Of course, I love everything he does. Thank you!

CARLA BLEY HOMAGE-TRIBUTE th-cam.com/video/hFuYF52Gcmo/w-d-xo.html
Fantastic. More attention is deserved for Sara Teasdale, the early 20th century American poet - her poem, “Winter Stars”, was used by Elling as the middle four verses. Her life story is worth exploring (spoiler alert: it’s sad)
Absolutely. I first read it as a 4th grader in Springfield IL when we learned from a favorite teacher that she was in love with local poet Vachel Lindsay.
Simply incredible🤩🤩🤩
Perfection. That is all.
부장님 멋져요!
Krása nesmírná Běla Balzarová
absolutely amazing!
A truly breath-taking interpretation of this absolute masterpiece by Carla Bley. Thanks for uploading this gem
Kurt....this good yes but so many other pieces that will establish the fact that other than Sinatra his phasing tone is so far ahead of the rest and with Hopgood the trio on all his major recordings.....the man is so good.........the interpretation fantastic Carla..... absolute gold
I’ve loved Carla Bley’s “Lawns” and “Healing Power” since her performance on David Sanborn’s “Night Music” with Bootsey Collins and the house band link: th-cam.com/video/MUwINMW0MbI/w-d-xo.html . What a beautiful tune and great addition of lyrics by Kurt Ellington.
Lyrics are by Sara Teasdale, written over 100 years ago.
@@eclharris Yes - the middle section lyric is Teasdale's poem "Winter Stars". Beautiful
