Guthrie gleefully supported Stalin's invasion of Poland in the USSR's collaboration with Hitler. Poland was a democraric nation that had not had independence for centuries, endurijg despite continuous Russian attempts to erase their ethnic identity through Russification. "Woody Sez" was the title of Woodie's column in which he praised Stalin as a liberator of Polish farmers, while the brutal dictator was simultaneously signing off on the active genocide of Poles. The utter lack of regard from the Soviets for the lives of the ethnic groups they (and, at the same time, Guthrie) claimed to be saving, would conribute to Poland and the Baltic States suffering the worst proprtional losses of life out of any nation in any war in human history. In "Woody Sez" Guthrie loved to talk about how much he hated fascists yet was noticably eager to support a regime that led to the deaths of tens of millions on ethnic lines, and oppressed hundreds of millions more for the pure pursuit of national power. Even when the very same nation itself disavowed it's past, Guthrie wasn't willing to admit he may have made a mistake. Naming your musical "Woody Sez" in praise of a supporter of genocidal authoritarianism is really not too different than someone in Central Europe putting on a stage play called "Mein Kampf" as a celebration of German patriotism.

This is shouldnt be celebrated as society of just a ordinary white woman life but the neglect of ignorances towards human life & discrimination. Make sure your souls are pure as acting not educating the evilness of the nature.

So glad that I had the opportunity to see this premier of Queens of the Golden Mask. To my ears, the bright dialog that masked a Faustian bargain was engaging and skillfully done. I thought of the many ways in which a soft drawl can cut. In this play, the cruelty below the surface is monstrous. The tidy kitchen set concentrates a world of banality and evil.

I discovered the play and your work by fluke tonight while looking for a video of the cape Michael Travis made for Liberace that had over 600 lights in it. What I don't know or haven't heard of constantly amazes me!! I knew Liberace via one of my best friends, Ray Arnett, hist producer & director for over 30 years. Through a circuitous route that went LA -Berlin -Vancouver BC. I found out about Soderbergh's planned movie because of Tom of Finland art works he wanted to use that belonged to a friend of a friend of mine. There is no one left alive who worked on the show except one person his former dresser) I figured no one would suspect that Ray was still with us & through that incetuous pipeline, got Ray's contact details relayed to Soderbergh. Steven visited Ray in his home several times for consultation & when I spoke with Ray I could hear him beaming and speaking with a vibrancy I hadn't heard in years. Interesting how something that could have been unimaginably difficult (contacting Soderbergh) was so easy; as if meant to be. The payoff (for me) was the palpable boost it gave to my dear friend nearing the completion of his time here. Ray was not given to displaying exuberance but he couldn't downplay his giddiness; enjoying one more brief moment in the sun. Candelabra aired May 26/13 & Ray died March 12/15 age 97. I'd love to see the play, Liberace & intend to write Brent Hazelton to commend him and inquire about licensing. Keep Tinkling... Sincerely Yours, xoxo ❤️🌹🎭🎹

Good idea. Execution...not so much! The live onstage sound is a mess. It might have been better if the two principal players had been recorded in an echo-suppressed room in front of a greenscreen with the ensemble video being displayed behind them.

I just saw this performance last Friday and I have to tell you the actors were amazing! It brought me back to my army days in basic training and beyond. Lot's of great humor, I laughed so hard. Don't miss it!
