Ok...WOAH and WOW,,,the very first piano entrance; and ensuing development is ULTRA SENSITIVE and so well phrased with colorful dynamics not that insipid typewriter playing that most professional pianists do to Mozart. Now io cant wait to check out his Beethoven. RIP fine, Sir.

I find the performances palpably trying to frame his inability to play the pieces at tempo as rubato and expression, sometimes capricious and phrase-destroying. But oddly he only succeeds in deconstructing their musical value. The regard in which this man's Liszt pianism is held baffles me. These performances are amateurish despite his alleged reputation as a specialist in this repertoire.

not everyone is fortunate enough to hear the greatness in his playing. of course, expression and musical value may be a matter of taste, but I think for many listeners (myself included), Russell Sherman brings a brilliant and communicative touch to these works that fills you with inspiration and curiosity. cheers and all best wishes.

I'm sorry. I know these after first healing Yunchan Lim where there is passion, fire and drive. This poor guy is really old man/square/ boring...but his technique and musicality are bar non. What has happened to his human sense of whimsy, mystery, phantasm??? Again, Yunchan Lim's has all of these with lots of rubato. Hr Sherman sounds as a though he is playing along to a metronome.

Excellent. Thank you. Dover Records, or was that B. Webster ? Can never remember. Anyhow, I can only imagine how he felt when just a few months later Lazar Berman surfed in from Europe on a giant wave of fawning praise, much from music writers not necessarily knowledgeable but afflicted with FOMO , got out his sledgehammer, and played these same Transcendental Etudes to the ecstatic unwashed. Tho he was no doubt aware that the next (?) booking tour Berman got in the New York are was in the Siberia - or at least Peoria - of the hall in Newark, before hundreds no longer thousands. Even fame is fleeting.

Those genius artistry have handed down to two generations of pianists and we are so lucky to witness and enjoy such an amazing musicians!

I have come to realize by playing these great etudes that this pieces are quite simply etudes of "character" , obviously whith great technical demands- There i´s so much simple so much written down by Liszt that gives you the opportunity to truly analize and interpret these masterpieces in so many ways- Even though i have always been a huge fan of Berman and Arrau ´s recording of this cycles just today i realized how this Sherman's recording is at the top whith those, funny enough i started listening to the recording in the naxos website thinking it was Earl Wildes rendition of the etudes. I basically did not know whoe Russell Sherman was until a few hours ago!!! Thanks maestro for these interpretations!!!
