When you're first starting to learn Tap, I would recommend keeping your arms either by your sides or putting your hands on your hips. Having them on your hips when starting out will help with any balance issues that you may run into. As you progress, you can begin to incorporate your arms more and more. I like to do natural arms with Tap rather than choreographed arms, so however your arms move as you Tap is what I find works best!

You don't need too big of a space, but you need enough space to be able to move around comfortably without feeling like you're having to modify your movements/steps because you're having to make them smaller. For example, my Tap board is a little over 2ft by 3ft, but I would recommend a Tap board closer to 3ft by 4ft, because at times I feel like my board is a little bit too small. As you progress, you'll learn to make your movements/steps smaller and won't need as much space as when you're first learning Tap. Hope that helps!

Does the floor matter what it is made out of. What is the best material to make it out of?

@LadyVebnor plywood works pretty well. It has to be a strong enough material to be able to Tap on it. Just make sure you have some sort of padding underneath so that your knees are protected!

Yes, they're comfortable. I wear Bloch Jason Samuels Smith Tap shoes.

If you don't have Tap shoes yet, then it's fine to start learning without the shoes. If you have a flat shoe with a hard bottom, that would give you some sound in order to hear your steps as you begin learning. However, if you plan on continuing to learn Tap, then I would recommend getting Tap shoes, because the main part of Tap Dance is the sound and the Tap shoes will help you to hear when you're not doing a step properly.
