I'm sorry you feel that way. I don't particularly feel like a disgusting person but don't forget the actions of the few don't dictate the many. A lot of hate has been spread throughout history in the name of 'you guys' and grouping people. But we're individuals and I don't necessarily have the same opinions as other booktokers you've seen on social media, especially some things that have been posted recently. In a world where you can be anything, be kind.

​@@TerriWestwell I'm trying to be kind and understanding about almost everything in the world. But I draw the line at normalizing and romantizising rape and violence in relationships. And you cannot convince me that that is not exactly what this book is doing. Reading porn books is fine, I don't judge people who read those. Even if it has dark elements to it, it can be still acceptable. But this book crossed so many lines, in so many ways. If you genuinely enjoy reading about the torture of a woman, then, I am sorry, but you are very strange to me. Maybe do look inside yourself and wonder why it's okay to read such things, more so read such things and not be horrorfied.

In addition, I do apologize for indirectly calling you disgusting. But I have seen what rape and violence does to people, I've seen many women wither away from such experiences, women that could've had a happy life. So I am very sensitive about these types of subjects. And, sure, you can argue, that "if I don't like it, I shouldn't read it", which is what I'm doing, I do not read any of this dark romance stuff. I do believe that normalizing such books contribute to sexual violence towards women (also men). Because it makes people believe (conciously or not) that these things are okay. Which they're not and never will be. Girls are sexualized younger and younger by the year, and such books, in which often the female protagonist is barely 18, but the male is twice her age, only make it worse. Promoting these books is harmful.

I completely understand where you're coming from. It certainly isn't for everyone, which is why there's is an extensive trigger warning list. And yes, SA is still a frighteningly common issue, but as a reader, we aren't the problem. Myself, and many other dark romance readers are very capable of recognising fiction from reality (not to mention that the book is about trying to bring down trafficking organisations). And yes, age gaps, SA etc creep me out too but also some people read certain books for that reason. Sometimes I watch a horror to feel spooked or I watch a romance to feel nice. Next week, I might read a thriller, but that doesn't mean I'm condoning murder. A fantasy doesn't make me want to carry around a sword and playing a video game doesn't make me want to pick up a weapon either. I just want to read and hear that others are enjoying what their reading too.
