I wonder what the cost per round was on some of that ammo. Anyway, interesting but no surprise these prototypes were shelved. Way too exotic. When it comes to fielding a weapon, KISS.

Its hilarious that they went through all of that time, effort, and most of all, taxpayer dollars to find out that all they needed to do to increase accuracy at range was to put a scope on your gun.

There's macabre cherry atop this budgetary misadventure whereafter, having issued ACOGs to the Marines, there was minor murmur of worry from the media that Iraqi insurgents might've been executed based on the increased amount of enemy deaths due to headshots. Nope. Just -Chuck Testa- optics and marksmanship.

Not surprised Colt submitted a modified version of the M16 yet again as that's what they always do: Colt is the WORST gun manufacturer, regardless of their few legendary products as they're always on the verge of bankruptcy, changing owners as Madonna changes her looks and all they always do is pimp the same 2 or 3 past successful models to death as all they sell nowadays are copies of their past hits such as the M1911, the AR-15 or the Python (which they claimed were dropping out do "changing market tendencies", but of course these pathetic hacks quickly returned it to their catalogs as that's one of the aforementioned 3 products they still sell sometimes). Furthermore, they haven't won a single big government contract in decades and all the proposals they submit to bidding contests are adapted versions of the M1911 or the AR-15. Even worse, all of the contracts they received during their "glory days" in last centuries were won because Samuel Colt bribed every single officer or government official involved to the point his company almost declared bankruptcy from all the funds he used.

@@Milkmans_Son Unfortunately, application of proven concepts isn't behavior excluded from incumbents treating stagnation as advantageous. Apples-to-oranges, to a degree. That said, the AR-15 platform probably wouldn't be as prolific as it is if were there not some baseline versatility to using such a small cartridge-at least before bodyarmor began to re-enter more modern battlefields.

@@MohammedMohammed-rd9fc I have no idea what you just said, or at least the first part anyway but either way what I said was not meant to be apples to apples. It was meant to point out the fact that basing a new gun on a proven design does not make a manufacturer the WORST. Financial problems do not mean they are pathetic hacks (Remington just went bankrupt, they all do it at one point or another). Lack of large government contracts. In other words, you didn't make your case.

@@Milkmans_Son Ah, can't catch me crowing at mountain of tech to be less than the combined Human sacrifice therein. Iterative as any art. Though who's to buy these cases once they're crafted? Save, buying into the unbroken should be barest one could expect for their purchase-yet you do only ever get that which is paid for.

This video that praises and whitewashes the M16 forgot to mention it's a shitty fucking rifle made out of plastic (hence the joke among servicemen saying that the rifle was made by Mattel) delicate as a flower which can't stand abuse and will jam after a few mags due to its idiotic direct impingement system, and that it require DECADES of updates and work just to make it somewhat acceptable. In comparison, the Kalashnikov rifles were super and perfect from the beginning while costing a fraction of the M16. All of this explains why the designer of the M16, Eugene Stoner, was so shitty and why he failed miserably in ALL of the guns he designed.

Did you just lose a shooting competition to an AR or something? You sound more than a bit bitter, especially saying guns like the AR-15 and SR-25 are somehow failures. And then every other statement you made was patently, obviously false, so what gives?

the ak took just as long to evolve into a proper weapons platform, going through many redesigns of smaller components and even entire manufacturing processes (like milled verus stamped parts), which took almost 15 years to reach what we would call a "modern ak" in 1959 (akm). the m-16 had a shorter turnaround in almost every metric when it came to fixing design flaws and has evolved arguably past the ak as a weapons platform in the modern day. also besides inventing the most sucsessful weapons platform in the western world, eugene stoner also was the brainchild behind multiple other technologies that included things like modular rifles, hyper velocity munitions that shot out of a fully automatic cannon (wich he designed), and was partially responsible for the bushmaster autocannon, among about a dozen other projects. the original m-16 might be a shitty rifle, but so is your opinion.
