Helloooo, Paige here. My dive buddy got surgery on his nose and was down and out for a few weeks, so I went on some solo snorkel adventures at the Marine Room in La Jolla, California. This is the first one in a series I will be posting, so please stay tuned! (& subscribe :p ) It was my first time seeing a sea turtle in San Diego and second time ever (first time was in Hawaii). Diving with Angel Sharks at Solana Beach!
มุมมอง 823 หลายเดือนก่อน
Scuba Diving at Pillbox, Solana Beach 7-27-2024 Red Tide was still affecting visibility, but we saw some cool Pacific angel sharks, a decent sized bass and a few crustations. With the updated beach, the walk was quite the distance. Songs: "Cat Scratch Fever" - Ted Nugent "Gimmie Three Steps" - Lynard Skynyrd
Red Tide at Marine Room, La Jolla

Diving Marine Room 7-20-24 Red Tide affected visibility pretty badly to the point where everything was tinted green. Large calico bass and lobsters everywhere. Ended up working on navigation skills with a nearby buoy because visibility was so poor. Still had fun! Songs: "Per un pugno di dollari - Titoli" - Ennio Morricone "The Ecstasy Of Gold" - Ennio Morricone "Rawhide" - Frankie Laine

Scuba diving at Marine Room, La Jolla Turns out conditions were not ideal where we like to spearfish, so we decided to drop by Marine Room as the conditions are usually fair. We saw some very large kelp bass as well as two lobsters with a 6-8in carapace, some or the largest we've seen in person.

They are standout and beautiful but I would associate these more with warmer Mexican waters. They are definitely rarer outside of the southern tip of California. Surf Perch are more Californian to me, they are everywhere up and down the coast surfing the waves.
You are correct about the surf perch, they are everywhere! But garibaldi are observed from Monterey bay all they way down to northern Baja California. We just saw some big ole boys down by San Onofre. At least 20inchs
@@scubascrubs That is good to hear, they're swimming gems.
The sea urchins!!! Plus, Joan Jett as background music,
Love the music
thanks! all free on youtube music
What depths are we looking at?
@@BoatsCop shore to max depth of 30 feet. Really shallow for scuba diving. 🤿
Waiting for the plot twist where you discover Atlantis and start a seaweed smoothie business. 🌿🏝
Those schools of fish with the sun behind them look amazing! Another excellent musical pairing too! 😊
I thought La jolla area is a protected space and no taking
@@MrMeijet there is a gap between the two conservation areas where fishing is legal, children’s pool sits smack dab in the middle of it
That's too funny, I was sitting in the gazebo watching you guys get suited up for this. That's my white KIA behind you. I was spearfishing that day thinking "man if I had scuba gear like them, I could clean house" LOL. Sick Creed quote intro and great songs
That’s too funny! Both free diving and scuba have their pros and cons. Free diving you guys have the element of surprise but have to hold your breath. Scuba it’s the opposite, quite hard to get big fish to get close enough to spear. We will start free diving soon for sure 🤙
A+++ adding the Mitchum Yacoub song!

Let's see the fish
We forgot to add the images to the video! They are in our instagram if you’re truly curious :)
Man last time I was there conditions were too rough for a dive! Hopefully next time around it'll be good like this. Sweet video 📸🤿👌🏻
We know right? it’s super hit and miss. If the waves are too big we go to the marine room. We have learned our lesson diving here though, it has to be this flat and near low tide to scuba dive safely otherwise there is a pretty rough current that pulls directly away from the entrance and the surge at high tide can be intense
How do you get to put awesome music on the vid? Do you take the copyright thing or is there "a wayeee"?!!
We use a video to mp3 converter to get songs. As long as we don’t make money or get a warning from TH-cam, we will use the music we find fitting. :)
@@scubascrubs I just love that! I don't make money either and would love to put better music on my vids. Ive gotten a copyright thing but it said it was ok despite the copyright mention. I am guessing there is a harsher degree I have not see. See you in the water!

Such a good dive! 😁🥲 The seals were so adorable 🥹 & good job spearing the fish 👏 2:33 “see you in octoberrrrrr” 😈🦞
Seal friend! 🥹 Great song choices 👍👍
where are the seals?
We are not sure on this day, maybe hunting? On our latest trip to children’s pool, (Video coming out Friday), there were plenty of seals! Stay tuned!
Another great dive ☺️ Can’t believe we saw 3 angel sharks! Soooo cool! The one at 2:18 was so buried I did not think there was a living creature attached to the fin! 🙀 Also, that walk tho 😮💨

The Ennio Morricone segue to Frankie Laine's "Rawhide" is amazing! Was that a flounder toward the end?
Foggy day above and below the water but we still had a great time 🤠 (The amazing conditions we had today made up for it 😛🦭)

Thank you!
i’m in san clemente so this is basically my second home lol it’s beautiful
Just north of Dana point is a great place to go diving as well!
I’ve been there. Multiple times!
That crab is like a walking reef
It’s probably gonna molt soon
Sooo many sheep crab 🦀😊 3:49 that was a huge ass jellyfish! 🪼
Grest underwater footage! Great song accompaniment too! 🤿🤿
Its like swimming in an underwater forest
Exactly our thoughts! It’s amazing how tall the kelp grows!

Wow so amazing
This is pretty cool 😎
Thanks!
CA politicians have a weird facenation with a very specific shade of orange. The california poppy is also the state flower and is the exact same color. and they are protected despight not being in any sort of ecological trouble
The color orange is associated with gold and the gold rush that took place in Californias early history not sure if/why the flower is protected but that’s why they like the color.
Have you ever fished it with a rod and reel or know if its any good?
@razorramon3256 We see people fish there all the time when it’s low surf. There is quite a bit of life under the water but it depends on what you’re trying to get. I’d say great place for kelp bass and opal eye for sure. If you can cast far you might be able to find yourself a halibut or yellow tail as we’ve seen both northwest of the wall
WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE LOBSTER 🦞
They are trying to swim away but they are hiding under a rock. So they just kids sit there flopping around. It’s quite funny.
The entry is so much easier with the stairs than it was climbing through the rocks. A great place to see Garibaldi and kelp.
As shore divers, we whole heartily agree. The divers before us saw some adult giant sea bass so it’s hit and miss just like any dive spot. Hope you had as much fun as we did!
WoW! Which dive shops is that
I really wanted to watch it but the music was too much
Thanks for reaching out! We appreciate the comment, the music is free from TH-cam and it wouldn’t be our first choice either but we work with what we have. :) We will try to get better music for future videos. Thanks again!
Agreed
I wondered it considering the water temperature, how thick a swim suit would not make us cold there? BTW, thank you for this beautiful sharing.
We used 7mm wet suits that day on two consecutive dives for about 2hours total. You’ll definitely want to bring something to warm up in between and after dives, but in the summer you can warm up in the sun pretty quick. Thanks for watching! We appreciate your comment!
omg looks awesome! What is it like to wear a wetsuit? From the looks of it, it looks super thick!
Thanks! These are somewhat thick wet suits at 7/5 but they make thinner ones for warmer water. Some people don’t like wearing hoods, but we feel it’s vital for longer dives. Even with the thick wetsuits we were only able to manage 2 consecutive dives at Catalina before having to warm up for a few hours.
@@scubascrubs ahh I see, that's interesting. Were you able to breathe well in the 7/5 suit and was your hood too tight?
@@jordanboo3164 A wetsuit feels like a tight hug. The wetsuit doesn’t restricts breathing but if you over inflate your BCD (vest), it can make it difficult to take deep breaths for sure.
@@scubascrubs oh wow! 😲 It will be nice to wear a wetsuit honestly because it protects you from head to toe hehe. Especially the hood makes you look cute plus shrinks your head too 😜
@@scubascrubs may I know the brand of the wetsuit you're wearing? Would love to check it out
living its best life
Three pronging with scuba gear. Weak. Harvesting fish by spear or three prong should only be allowed via apnea diving.
I ended up switching to a break tip because 3 prong are only good for small fish I appreciate your comment though!
@surf_n_snow Also please share what else not to do, as we’ve never gone out with other people… I just decided to start spearing because we lobster dive and there were fish around. (:
@@scubascrubs certainly! I’m a local Spearo of this spot and those of us that spear this area are just protective of it. Hunting underwater with oxygen takes a lot of the skill out of it and will rub spearOs the wrong way. This is because we spend a lot of time working on our breath hold and Free dive abilities in order to go into an completely hostile environment for a human and be able to stay calm and use proper technique in order to successfully target specific species and provide food in a more sustainable way than traditional fishing. Not everyone can do it. And that’s what makes it special. So when you ad scuba to the equation it’s undermines that hard work we put in to be able to hunt underwater. It is generally viewed as unsportly (although technically legal). There are exceptions to this like if you are targeting invasive species or sea urchin or very very deep species. But if you are spear fishing anywhere near the La Jolla cove there’s almost no reason to need scuba. Just work in that breath hold🤙🏼.
💯
Exactly! Bubble blowers loll
The drift dive off the north end was a blast
We will have to try that out next time we are there!
OMG 😮 I would love to have this
Me too! It was unfortunately in a protected area and we weren’t allowed to take it. :( beautiful to watch though!
Love the walking down to the shore + great music choices 😊
Thanks! We do what we can with the free music provided by TH-cam. :)
