Scottish Salmon Farming
The reality of open cage Salmon farming. Majestic fish desperate to escape from the confines of the pens, injuring themselves on ropes and nets. Factory farming at its worst, but not subject to public scrutiny. Mortality rates are very high, due to lice infestation, disease and injury. Tonnes of toxic chemicals are poured into the pristine waters of the Scottish coastline. Still, the government calls for expansion.

The first tryout of my Steadicam Smoothee. It's nicely balanced, right out of the box, for GoPro or iPhone cameras. I'll have to make up a separate mount to take the compact camera with tripod mount. Slightly difficult to steer at first, but I'll soon get the hang of it. The difference in the results is dramatic, especially with the iPhone. Worth every penny.

    While this is a very fine piece of scientific investigation I can't help feeling that a simpler comparison might yield data that is easier to interpret for the purposes of designing junk rigs. The problem here is that the data is inevitably convolved with the hydrodynamic performance of the hull and we need to unpick the rig performance from this in order to progress our understanding of the rig. I would suggest that land-based test rigs (perhaps scaled down in the first instance) could be run for very long periods with measurements from a sonic anemometer logged along with the lift, drag and rolling moments of the rig for a range of sheeting and other rig adjustments.

    How is it scientific to test two completely different boats? If you don’t have the exact same design, or even better, the exact same boat, how can you possible compare them? And even at that, two identical boats with different rigs would have to be sailing the same course at the exact same time. I don’t see the comparative scientific data being at all relevant. 🤷‍♂️

    quite the interesting testing procedure. I'm sure I'm not the only one that is impressed. My question is: how much do i need to increase the sail area on a Junk rig to get the same (or better) performance of that of a Bermuda rig? My goal is to put a junk rig on a catamaran. I am considering a bi rig set up (believing there must be a reason that that configuration seems to be the most popular), possibly even a third mask center cockpit towards the rear or another bi rig towards the rear with smaller sail area's. (somewhat emulating a schooner). awkward as it sounds, my math suggests that i can gain efficiency without sacrificing safety. Can you tell me your thoughts please. I would not doubt that i am completely wrong.

    Thank you for the video. I've never done it before but I am considering it as an alternative to the pricey boatyard services.Can the antifouling paint be applied on a wet hull and how long does it need to dry? Also, isn't it necessary to sand the hull? Cheers!

    • @andrewholder4539
      @andrewholder4539 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hull was dry in the wind in no time. The antifouling paint can usually be applied straight over the old, as long as the weed is scraped off. Definitely no need to sand. I certainly wouldn't want to deposit too much in the water anyway. The new paint dries in about an hour. Good luck if you try it.

    Brave souls, and fast workers ! God I'd want at least one prop ! "tied back" ?rope to the mast head ? some 1000's saved there with this practical traditional "careening" method.

    • @andrewholder4539
      @andrewholder4539 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. There's a rope just above the boom, with a wooden post. Providing she's leaning slightly towards the wall, there's no reason she would fall over. I think careening refers more to leaning a boat on its side to work on the hull.

    Great to see Calisto even if so briefly. I grew up on her! I remember when we fitted that mast (she initially had a wooden one) and changed the treadmaster from blue to brown. I have personally travelled across the English Channel at least 20 times in Calisto - I hope she looks after you as well as she did our family. Amazing example and very pleased Forbes seem to have restored much of her former glory :)

      Hi Ross, What a fantastic comment, thank you for getting in touch. She is such a lovely boat, and so reassuring up here where the conditions can change in 10 minutes! I have just recently done some mods, bringing the lines back to the cockpit so its easier to reef, and I have acquired an electric windlass which makes life a bit easier. Also, she has just had a new paint job, after sustaining some damage from the mooring buoy tackle. We don't get out nearly enough, but when we do there's nothing better. Do you sail still? Where are you based? What boat? so many questions! Thanks again.

    • @arrowvisit
      @arrowvisit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Holder I thought I'd spend a couple of minutes sharing some memories etc - Calisto is a beautiful boat and you must be very proud to own her - there's not too many Varnes around and from what I've seen Calisto has to be by far the best one. I live near Southport and I'm out on Lake Windermere most weeks on my little RIB, planning to buy something that I can sleep on and sail next year - again for Windermere). Dad bought Calisto in c.1980 from the guy who purchased her new as pretty much a hull and deck. His was a failed project so Dad and the eldest of my brothers picked her up and sailed her from Essex to Hayling Island where her rebuild began (I was about four when she came to our family). During the off season every hour of every weekend (every year) was spent making her good and maintaining her while she was in the boat house and every year we'd cross the channel at least twice (often 3 or 4 times) bringing back lots of duty free while trying to avoid customs!! Apart from winter time she was always moored at the Hayling Yacht Company in Mill Rythe Ln on a swinging mooring.. In around 1984 we had her fully resprayed. Dad has always been a stickler for his boats being pristine (I mean to the point where it's an obsession!). The year before we'd been bumped into by a steel hulled french yacht captain who wanted the same space as us on a pontoon in Cherbourg! There was no damage to the hull other than scratches and the respray made her look just stunning. We always anti-fouled her red below the waterline but the way she is now with dark blue to match the hull is just great in my opinion. I showed some pics of Calisto to my Dad a few months ago (from Forbes Facebook page) and it was amazing because he had so many memories and especially memories of fitting certain parts to the boat. I think it made him extremely proud that after all this time and having been refitted since, she still retains so much of my Dad's work. I know she's had several owners since we sold her and I've found photos of her looking a bit sorry for herself in between so It made me very happy to find out that Forbes had gutted her and done a near complete refit. She was very well known in Cherbourg, St. Malo and St. Vaast as well as Guernsey, Jersey and the smaller channel islands. We went sailing most weekends and would often pop over to Cowes or Bembridge. She once almost capsized just outside of Cherbourg when we were hit by a freak wave of some magnitude - such a seaworthy girl though - she righted herself and my mum was left hanging over the port side holding a stantion having gone straight through the spray dodge! I was asleep down below (about 9yrs old sleeping on the port bunk in the main cabin where you're closest to the table) and I woke up being flung about and getting smacked in the head by a fog horn!! I remember when we got a lobster pot caught round the prop & rudder so we had to beach her on her side (scary experience with a fin keel). I remember when we almost hit a floating cow that must of fallen from a cliff of one of the channel islands! A couple of years ago Dad bought a Westerly Fulmar which we picked up in St Peterport (Guernsey) and I helped him sail her back to Cornwall - loved every second of the journey - more recently he bought a Moody 336 called Calsara which we sailed from The Hamble back to Cornwall together. He spends most of his time on her in St Mawes. One of my brothers is a professional skipper (has been for about 25yrs now) and 10 days ago he set sail on a solo non-stop round the world trip on a boat he sort of built (with a not dissimilar beginning story to Calisto) with a bit of help from my Dad and others. I saw Calisto had been back into to Forbes for a bit of a work - glad it wasn't anything too serious. I hope one day you're able to post another video so that I can continue my trip down memory lane Andrew? Thanks for sharing this clip, she looks fantrastic :)
