Seizures: Perception vs. Reality
มุมมอง 5794 ปีที่แล้ว

Most people think seizures are only caused by certain stimuli, like flashing lights for example, and avoiding these st...

This video (like the other one on auras) is such a good video! I was diagnosed with multiple seizure patterns as an infant. I mostly had grandmal seizures but I also had absance frequently and sometimes I experienced atonic seizures. Now I think I am having focal seizures that are very strange and I don’t know when postictal behavior begins or if I am still having a focal seizure. I have been frustrated with emergency personnel for a long time because they often don’t know about anything other than tonic clonic convulsions in epileptics And I have been mistreated when I am having multiple seizures because of this lack of knowledge. Now because the medicine is not controlling my seizures and because of this unusual behavior, my neurologist is not taking me seriously and suspicious that I am dealing with PNES. But I don’t relate to how people describe their experience of a psychogenic seizure. I very much relate to how people experience epileptic seizures. My experience of seizures have always been the same. I have an aura, I go unconscious, and then I regain consciousness and I am sick and confused. Now I don’t know when my seizure has stopped and postictal behavior has started. Or if all of it was PNES or just some of it. And what part was an epileptic seizure and what part was psychogenic? I’m more alone and confused than ever. I really relate with this interview video. Hearing that I am not the only one struggling with this misconception of epilepsy is very comforting for me.

I feel really high and sometimes I hallucinate just before a seizure… like an acid trip. I think that’s what you’re describing also?

Thank you. I am writing a novel wherein a character of mine suffers from seizures and this is an invaluable resource as most other online materials are clinical or first aid based and not from the patients first-hand perspective and experience. As someone who has never suffered from such seizures, I would like to make my character's experience ring true in the mind of any potential readers who do or have suffered with such seizures, as such, these testimonies will be helpful in hopefully achieving that goal.
