Dr Alan Goodall
This features some of my research at Karisoke Research Centre in Rwanda, starting in 1970, as the first scientist to work with Dian Fossey. Then later, as Director of Karisoke, after the murder of Dian. I also studied the gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park in DRC. I travelled extensively throughout Kivu province in 1979/80 doing a survey for WWF to census the location of all eastern gorilla populations. Again I visited Karisoke - to discuss conservation issues with Dian. During this period I climbed the Ruwenzori's - The Mountains of the Moon. Most of their glaciers have since disappeared.
I went back to Rwanda in July 1994 - just after the end of the terrible war and Genocide had ended. In 1999 I became the Rwandan Diplomatic Representative in the (then) new Scottish Parliament - with the remit to help Rwanda with it's reconstruction and rebuilding. We did a lot together - especially in Education.
I will upload more material soon!

Flight of Violet Bumble Bee
Another wonder of nature here at my Chalet in the Southern French Alps A Violet Bumble Bee (Xylocopa violacea) has started to visit my hanging flower baskets. Beautiful to watch as it was 'busy as a bee' collecting nectar. Hope you enjoy as much as I did.
Re 'The Wandering Gorillas' Second Edition HD 720p
As I later learned from my pygmy trackers in Kahuzi- Biega National Park in Zaire, the issue of so-called poaching was much more complicated than we first realised. These forest had once been as much their home as it was to the elephants, antelopes and gorillas. The creation of a National Park immediately dispossessed them from their land - and left them nowhere to go, no way to feed their fami...
Award of Honorary D.Univ. from the University of West of Scotland

This is an edited version of the UWS Graduation Ceremony on 4 July 2018 - held at the historic Paisley Abbey, built in A.D. 1163. Apologies for this who have been 'edited out here' - for the sake of brevity of a 90 minute ceremony, especially all the new graduates. The full ceremony can be seen at th-cam.com/video/VpTOsuPQQDQ/w-d-xo.html The 'Encomium' for my award (ie nice words of praise) was...
Gorilla man to Cat man
Now that I am retired I live at the edge of a National Park in the French Alps. Four years ago I found a tiny, half starving, feral cat in my rear garden. I gave her food and a bed outside - and named her 'Shinda' . Needless to say she then came back each day for more - cats are not stupid! However, my suspicions regarding her weight gain were confirmed few months later. I prepared a comfortabl...
Karisoke - Dian Fossey's original research centre in the Virunga Volcanoes, Rwanda.
This video shows Dr Alan Goodall's return to Karisoke in December 1987, following the murder of Dian Fossey. He first went to Karisoke to work with Dian Fossey in 1970 - when her fledgling research centre in the Virunga Volcanoes of Rwanda was then called "Camp Moshi' It was only later she changed the name to Karisoke - despite what she later claimed regarding it's founding in 1967! Alan's next...
Being 'grilled' by Jeremy Paxman on BBC morning TV
I have been 'Paxmaned' - yes this is a phrase! see this on Google www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=Paxmaned&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 This was my worst TV Interview - by far! I have uploaded it to show, warts and all, how NOT to let yourself be 'grilled' by an experienced TV interviewer such as Jeremy Paxman - unless you are WELL prepared! This interview was done, as they say 'Down the line...

Presentation of Landrover by MP Chris Patten at Premiere of 'Gorillas in the Mist'
Report on BBC 'Newsround' of Chris Patten (UK Minister for Overseas Development) presenting Alan with the keys of Landrover donated by Margaret Thatcher's government for our work at Karisoke, Virunga Volcanoes, Rwanda. Aficionados of gorilla research will note the 'deliberate mistake' of the BBC presenter re how we will 'use the Landrover to patrol the park where the gorillas live' Even Landrov...

This was an interview on Scottish Television after the first showing of 'Among Mountain Gorillas' in 1990. It went on to be short listed by Wildscreen and won three top awards at the wildlife film festival in Missoula, Montana. Now you can see it here on my site!
Appearance on Blue Peter with the late Caron Keating
This was broadcast live in 1989 when I came over to UK to attend the Premiere of 'Gorillas in The Mist' at the Odeon Theatre in London - and to receive the keys of the Landrover from Chris Patten - then Minister for Overseas Development in UK. The top of the range Landrover was a gift to Karisoke from Margaret's Thatcher's government - after I had written to her explaining our work in Rwanda. T...
Discussion with Paul Coia and Desmond Morris on BBC Scotland's 'Garden Party'
This was filmed in June 1988 - when I was Director of Karisoke Research Centre, following the murder of Dian Fossey. I was visiting the UK on my way to USA. I was trying to get publicity for my approach that we needed to help the people of Rwanda - as well as the gorillas. Paul Coia had been one of my students when I was a Lecturer in Environmental Biology at what is now the University of the W...

Jozi's Story
This is the sad story of a young female gorilla - Jozi - in one of our study groups who had her hand caught in a wire snare. This was set in the forest by poachers to catch antelopes, but, as can be seen, these snares are not selective in what they catch.
