Arizona trail bikepacking: A detailed breakdown of an ultra racing mtb setup
I just got back from an ITT on the AZT800, unfortunately a foot of snowpack halted me at around mile 500 so I wasn't able to finish. nonetheless here is the kit and equipment I used to stay on record pace for the first 5 days.

    You threw up? Great now keep going. Have you never pushed yourself to exhaustion before? Once you have nothing in your stomach, you won't throw up and you can push even harder. Use the pain to your advantage. Hate yourself for pushing yourself so hard. Gather that energy and focus it.

      Oh yeah I’ve done that before thing is it’s not the fastest way to get to the finish line that’s still 1800km away. You are better off recovering from the bug and getting over it properly

    Wow i watched the 1 video how you did your setup and this one after! Just really impressive achievement! Unbelievable great trip! So it was round about 245km and 2500hm per day!!! Just Unbelievable! 🎉💪🏻🥳👍🏻In the vidoe at 17:45 you looked so completely done, dirty and wracked! How may hours did you even sleep per night and how was the hygiene part? Did you even wash your clothes and could you even get a shower at this trip or just lakes and fountain water to keep you a bit clean? Could you also say what of the equipment was good and what not? What did you miss and what would you pack differently? Best regards Julia

      I got around 4 hours per night and stayed in a hotel maybe once a week to wash myself and clothes in the shower etc.

      @angusyoung-enduranceathlete Wow 4 hours of sleep is really not a lot after so many miles and evaluation and keep going day after day! This must have been really hard

    Hi Angus, this exactly setup what i was looking for. I will go on 10000km Europe trip and didn't want to be packed up so much like the most gravelers and carry too much stuff with me. I didnt want any sidebags or so except waterbottels like you had. I never saw somebody who rolled thair sleeping setup like this and this looked brilliant!🎉 I'll definitely try it out. Do you have a video or some comments how your trip went and how your setup was? Did you miss anything or would've done it differently? I hope you had a great time and manged the trip save! Best regards Julia

      Hi Julia, The only yhtink i think i would change for this trip wold be a suspension fork as it was pretty rough at times but that is more of a route specific change. for "gravel" this was spot on.

    • @juliaherzog4995
      @juliaherzog4995 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @angusyoung-enduranceathlete I see! I thought the same that it would be really hard to ride in the Spain and Portugal at this gravel parts. I'll hopefully experience this in 2026. So you made a good setup and thanks for responding.

      @@angusyoung-enduranceathlete My wife's view is that we should do these things while our bodies let us. We toured in France in 1994 as a delayed honeymoon and have, in the last couple of years (on ebikes), ridden the Tour Aotearoa and Tour Kopiko routes in New Zealand. Worth googling to see. The TA is 3,000 km long, but we found the Kopiko (at only 1,200 km, tougher going as it traverses some isolated parts of the North Island (code of poor roads). Come down and see!

    Very insightful video, thanks. What pressure did you run the 2.6s at? I've just fitted a pair and I can't get the pressure right. I'm concerned about going too low.

    Looks like you have 28 and 30mm internal rim widths. How did the wide Mezcal 2.6s work on those? I've been wanting to try them but have been worried that 28mm is too narrow.
