35. Fibre Love Podcast | Silk Song Shawl | Ranunculus | Dropp | Rauma Fivel | Nutiden | Manchelopi
This was recorded from Friday 6th September 2024. The delay in uploading was due to laptop issues which might mean I will be unable to upload further episodes for the foreseeable future. I am trying to resolve this issue but because of this I was unable to do any editing on this video inc inserting pictures where I mention I will.

Maria, are you holding Vagabond single or double for your sweater? It is lovely ❤️
Thank you <3 ! For the Dropp jumper I'm holding it double. But Vagabond is deiinitely one of those colourways which you can comfortably hold single because of it's thickness :-)
So happy to see you :-)
😊 thank you
I truly appreciate all the Fibre discussions. Your podcast has introduced me to quite a few beautiful yarns that I knit with quite often now.❤
Thank you and it's wonderful to know that it's helpful <3
lovely to see you back :-)
Thank you! 😊
Always so interesting and inspiring ! Thank you so much :)
Thank you for your kind words! So glad you enjoyed it :-)
It's always good to see a new episode from you and the long-forms are always welcome. I've heard good things about Rauma Fivel and Kinross 4-ply and hope to try them out soon... the temptation is real! I'm completing a cardigan with Hillesvag Tinde after frogging a sweater and that yarn is lovely. I love the dark base yarn and the richness of the colors. Those soaps at the end... so beautiful. 😉 How would you compare Kinross or Laxton to Woolyknit or JC Rennie?
Thank you Enig :-) I have Tinde too!! Can't wait to use that yarn. But it has to be something special because it has become a little more expensive now and I don't see myself purchasing another garment quantity anytime soon. I would love a garment quantity of Rauma Fivel in the future - it truly is an exquisite yarn! I would say that both Kinross and Laxton are definitely softer than both Woolyknit or even JC Rennie (which I think is softer than Woolyknit). Out of them all I think the Kinross is softer but the Laxton is silkier. It's difficult to articulate exactly lol but suffice to say they are both very nice to work with.
@@CedarTreesBumblebees Oh no, now you have me intrigued on both Kinross and Laxton. I'll try to contain myself and not go crazy and buy dozens of cones like I've done for Rennie and Woolyknit.**try** When I read things like "Tinde has gone up in price", it does make me feel happy about stocking up on insane quantities.
I wish I had stocked up on Tinde! I only found out about the Knit With Attitude shop very recently and that they stock Hillesvag. Oh well!
That freestyle orange tan jumper looks like roositude type colorwork. Can you do something like that? You are very talented!
This is super helpful! Thank u
Love your playful shawl, like your color combo
That Moinier is beautiful, love your color combos. I also have the Bakkers shawl in my favs
I always want to see what u r wearing as it looks nice from what we can see! I really appreciate your color combinations. Love the headband. Ohh nice shawl and love that color.
Oh thank you! Unfortunately with the way things are it's difficult to do a lot of editing and I can only face the tripod one way during the shoot. But most of my wardrobe is handmade and hopefully I'll get a chance to show more sewing if I can make shorter videos!
Glad to see u r back!
Happy you are back!
You're so right about Nutiden being addictive and with my ever-increasing stash, I had to cancel my Patreon and stop buying. I have been buying other yarn though. I also got Forgarn and it's so delicate that I think I'll have to hold with laceweight yarn so the garment lasts longer. I have Tinde and Vilje and plan on stocking up later this year. I need to get knitting some more. Not sure what garment you have on but the fabric and color is gorgeous.
I'm surprised you found Forgarn delicate. I knit it up 2 stranded since that's the way it's wound (I'm not going to be separating those strands!) and I found the yarn very stable, maybe more stable than Nutiden, definitely more than Manchelopi, but not as stable as Plotulopi. The Hillesvag colours I want have been out of stock for a while on Knit With Attitude but I plan on getting more Tinde too. I think I mentioned in the video but the garment I'm wearing is the Madeleine Sweater by Vert & Rose (I made it with Drops Kid Silk Mohair Ash Grey and Woolyknit Merino DK Hank in Charcoal) :-)
@@CedarTreesBumblebees I knit continental and it could have been how I was tensioning the yarn, but it kept separating. This was my first time watching with it and it only got better when I added a strand of mohair. To make the garment last longer, I'll use it with mohair - I haven't decided what I'll make but Sweater no 23 will be one and maybe Storm sweater or Guernsey genser. I get my Hillesvag yarn from their site (Ull) as they now ship internationally and they have added a few more colors. I got a lot of Tinde last year and have a wish list of Vilje. Beautiful pattern.
Great pattern ideas! I'm not sure yet what I'll make Forgarn into but possibly a chunky cardigan as I got a 12-13s gauge on 5mm needles (2 stranded). I think the Instant Gratification Cardigan. I'm very excited about Hillesvag and Rauma yarns too right now but I have been slowing down the purchasing as I really need to! That's interesting to know that Hillesvag ship internationally though - if the postage isn't too much then I might just have a look lol!
@@CedarTreesBumblebees In one breath, you say you need to slow down on yarn purchasing and take a look at Hillesvag in case postage is not too much. LOL Be sure you stock up to get the most out of your postage costs. 😂 That's the yarn lover's dilemma, isn't it.
Lol so true!
This was so fun to watch and glad to see you are enjoying your knits. I burst out laughing imagining your grandmother with a rambo-style head scarf. 😂 I go for bonnets because I don't like the feeling of my hair on a pillowcase. I totally hear you on getting fit - knitting does play into our body image though. I've also thought about how weight loss means complete projects quicker. 😂😂😂 I love that colorwork cowl - so beautiful as is your vest. Your videos always make me want to go yarn shopping. I've not bought yarn all year and this made me think of JC Rennie - and lo and behold, the colorway they haven't had in stock for 2 YEARS in back in stock. And to "save on shipping", I don't just buy 1 cone. When I realize how much more expensive Woolyknit pricing is today, I feel don't feel so bad for stocking up. Their price hike is a bit too volatile. My first purchase from their site was early 2022 and back then the cones were £20 - now they are £30 as the price increases every few months. With Woolyknit, maybe you can buy 1 cone and 1 hank - that's if the color is available. However, the garment gets a bit heavy for me so I do 1 strand fingering held with laceweight.
Hi Enig! So nice to hear from you. Thank you for complementing my colour-work garments. I do love a more plaid/tartan/gingham style chart and worked hard on perfecting mine. I know what you mean about the Woolyknit prices and also how the hanks and cones in the same colour aren't always in stock at the same time. To be honest I purchase more from JC Rennie and I can guess what colour you're talking about lol.
@@CedarTreesBumblebees That's too funny - I figured this is a perfect time to buy yarn and placed my order. Hope all are in stock this time. I got quite a few cashmere blends as they had more colors in stock.
@@CedarTreesBumblebees If you guessed Morpheus, you were correct. I had to wait until the shipment was delivered before I could celebrate. What a gorgeous color! I purchased quite a few cones and I now wish I had purchased some more. 😂No lie, their cones are the stinkiest. I immediately popped a cotton ball saturated in eucalyptus oil into the box and let it sit for a few days to neutralize the odor and any "passengers" that might have made the trip.
Just received the new Nutiden Shop colors!! I am hoping you have some and will be doing a podcast. Hope you are well all things blessed for your life💚
Thank you for your kind words! Hopefully I'll have the time to make a podcast soon! <3
So good to see you back!!! And I’m still drooling over the Otippad. As soon as I saw it Oh My! I ordered a lot as it’s one of my favorite colors. There’s a new color in the sampler that I love, kind of a navy/teal 😉 Hopefully in August. I have Byttan from the last update. Very fine and I’m struggling even holding it with kid mohair, but it is beautiful. Have you knit a Ranunculus? I knit my first and love the pattern. I extended the sleeves and have worn it over a dress. I will definitely make a cool weather one. I share your love of Nutiden and really enjoy you sharing TY. Your spinning is beautiful! I’ve not blended fibers yet, I like how yours turned out.
Thank you so much for your kind words! <3 I think I know what Nutiden colour you're talking about and I'm so excited for that stormy teal one too! There is another Nutiden colour coming in the August collection, a golden dark brown that I have my eye on as well - so much for trying to not buy more Nutiden lol! The Ranunculus was my first proper 'knitted in the round' garment ever and I love it. I'm knitting another one currently for a gift knit and would like to knit yet another one for myself too. Maybe in Plotulopi held double. It's just such a versatile pattern. I can see myself knitting a few different ones including one from mohair which I love the look of. I highly encourage everyone to give spinning and blending fibres a try. It's definitely as much fun, if not more, as knitting is! :-)
good to see you back :-) i purchased a nuti stash myself. the colours are gorgeous :-)
Thank you! And yes the colours of the Nutiden are gorgeous and I'm excited for the upcoming August colours too!
Yay🎉🎉🎉 So happy you are back, even for a short one :-)
Thank you! Will hopefully have a podcast up in the near future <3
The Nutiden Otippad is stunning! And love how the Seaswirl fibre is spinning up.
Thank you! I'm really enjoying my spinning atm :-)
I’ve purchased several cones from JC Rennie and yes aren’t they nice! I bought “Tusk” colorway on a lambswool cone ! It is a stunning cream color with so much nuance it’s truly hard to describe! Ugie pearl is magic! I love Wizard and Graphite green as well! It was fun watching you describe the colors. ClaudiaSJI
Thank you for watching! Despite the extra effort in prewashing these cones before using, I still find them to be one of the best wool when knitted up. The fabric it creates is exceptionally beautiful and definitely in my top 3 all time favourite yarns. It's definitely worth the effort and the price is still great for these cones despite other yarn on cones going up almost double in price (since making this video).
And yes the colourways in Tusk, Ugie Pearl and Wizard are simply amazing. I think only John Arbon comes close to the magical heathering in JC Rennie's yarn <3
I made the hiedra headband by Fiber Tales recently. So pretty, would recommend!
I'm also planning to knit the Gro shawl but I'm having a hard time trying to decide between Robust and Apostrof! The March collection was just too good 😅
Thank you for the recommend! I've had it for a while so should just get down to knitting it!
I knew that Robust was going to be either a jumper or cardigan for me so got a garment quantity of it. I think Apostroph would either make a good shawl or look amazing as part of colourwork (combined with Robust). Either way you choose I'm sure it will be lovely. The March collection was an amazing one.
Just a tip that helped me and might help you. When knitting in the round, I am always fussing with pushing the stitches up onto the left needle. It makes it so much more unpleasant to knit especially, with endless knit stitches in the round; round after round. I learned that if I change the size of the left needle down 1 size, the stitches slide much more easily. It is not only much easier but, makes the knitting go much faster. Hope this helps. 😊❤
Oooh that's a great idea! I might just try that first to see if it makes a difference. Thank you so much for the suggestion <3
With the colourwork sweater, try changing the needles. See if it makes a difference. It’s too nice to suffer with.
Yes I agree! I love the yolk and really want it in my wardrobe. So I will be swapping out the needles and see if that hopefully helps :-)
Grey and red are always a winning combination 🇦🇺🎸⚡️🤘🏿🤘🏼💋❤️ good choice
No problems with looking at fibres. Don’t need long intros either. Just get into it.🇦🇺🎸⚡️🤘🏿🤘🏼💋❤️ just received my first three Holst Garn cones. So excited they are so beautiful
Love your podcast. I’m always in awe of how little time you have been knitting and how skilled you are :-)
Wow thank you! That's an amazing compliment <3
Love your videos!
I do love your plaid colour work especially your colour choices. Good luck with your garment creation. I do see some designers invite those whose size is not currently included in a pattern to contact them and they will grade/offer the pattern to be test.
Thank you for the compliment - I'm having a lot of fun with the plaid colour work right now :-) I would only contact designers now when the 'invite' is clearly in writing (on their pattern page/website). I have seen some designers like Fiber Tales, where they haven't managed to find testers for the big sizes on some of their patterns, have stated clearly they welcome being contacted if a larger size isn't graded and the person is willing to test knit for them. I really appreciate and admire her for that and she is quickly becoming one of my favourite designers. But not the designers I mentioned in the video unfortunately. I've approached two (quite big) designers now about patterns that I loved the look of and both ignored me. For one of them I contacted them multiple times (a bit like a stalker - I really liked the pattern!) before finally getting a reply because I asked publicly on their Instagram and they couldn't ignore then. That isn't the way it should be and I didn't like doing that to them so won't be contacting any designer now no matter how much I love their pattern, if it isn't in my size (unless of course they've clearly stated they welcome being contacted on their pattern page). I don't want to force anybody into a position they clearly don't want to be in. I've seen one of these designers reply to a comment about one of the patterns I loved but that isn't size inclusive, and their response is that 'it is difficult to translate the design to larger sizes and still keep a beautiful fit' and they currently have no intention of catering to larger sizes. Maybe it's true that they can't make their garments for larger sizes without compromising the fit of them. But I've learnt my lesson about not contacting designers about making larger sizes unless they clearly invite in writing.
I love your layered sweater and blue wrist warmers! Your combinations of yarn are amazing. Please post more 🙏🧶
Thank you for your kind words! <3
@@CedarTreesBumblebees please post more 🙏
Those new Nutiden colours look gorgeous! Can't wait for the public shop update. Also love all your plaid colour work charts, the cowl looks stunning ☺
Thank you so much!
I love your plaid steek sweater!!
Thank you <3 I can't wait to get working on it again :-)
The freestyled colour work projects look lovely ❤.
Thank you! I hope they turn out ok :-)
I love your new contrast choices :-) Stay well and stay warm 💜❄️
Thank you! 😊
What an enjoyable podcast! The custom blend braid you have is beautiful - reminds me of melted vanilla and chocolate ice cream in a bowl. 😀The hanks you created are stunning - especially the one you said was carded twice. I can not believe you made those. That would look so good knitted up to make an oversize pullover. I'm knitting Sweater No. 23 as I watched this and that yarn would be perfect. I totally get when you mean about Drops Air feeling weird.Maybe you're used to use pure wool so you notice the difference in the fibers. When using Drops Air, I hold it with their kid silk mohair to give the final garment more structure. Also, it feels better on the hands since the fibers from the mohair cover the polyamide. I also use a smaller metal needle on the left hand and recommended needle on the right hand - the right hand needle determines the size of the stitch and the smaller needle on the left makes your stitches move better. I find I have to knit with my bamboo needle - I don't care too much for the feeling of the yarn on the right needle. That dirty fleece story was horrifying - I was laughing and squirming at the same time.
Thank you Enig! I am chuffed about how the spinning is developing and love the look of the spun fibre from the custom blend. And you're right, after feeling it, all I can think about is knitting some oversized and cosy drop shoulder jumper that I'll wear all the time. I like the look of Sweater No.23 but am being really drawn to the Winters Pullover by Ozetta. It's got such a snuggly look to it! I might try changing up the needles on the Drops Air Skyhill. It's frustrating to think I will have to frog it because I don't want to work on it. I don't have bamboo cable needles so might switch to metal needles to see if it helps (I'm working the hat on Lykke Indigo Shorts atm). In the end I might just cast another one on in Alafosslopi or Nutiden held triple and leave this one as a languishing WIP in hopes I can come back to it one day. Lol I can laugh looking back at the fleece shenanigans but at the time the horror was real! You live and learn though :-)
thanks for the great video, it was really helpful
You're welcome! And so glad you found it useful :-)
I'm very much enjoying your freestyling. My ideas regarding specific yarns in my stash rarely adequately fit available written patterns. I end up saving the yarn because I don't want to waste it on something that doesn't quite fit my desires. You are inspiring me to take the risk and knit with an idea rather than a rigid plan.
That is amazing to hear! I don't think you have to even be an experienced knitter to start freestyling and honestly before patterns I think this is what the majority of knitters did as the norm. It's also very freeing because you don't have to be glued to a screen or A4 printout to knit. I do take notes though (as I want both sleeves or cuffs to look the same!) so a notepad will probably be handy. Good luck with your knitting journey <3
Maybe you can combine the Nutiden Hag and the Wooly Knits yarn to finish that row in your sweater. I think together it might make the yarn color close to the one you ran out of.
Thank you for the suggestion - I actually hadn't thought of one of each, but I've already started finishing the row with 2 strands of the Woolyknit Khaki Green and it actually isn't that noticeable at all. It's a very heavy garment (almost 1kg) and I think it needs a stronger wool than unspun especially when I pick up for the neckline. Anyway, I'm just glad I didn't have to put another order in for 1 ball of yarn!
It was lovely catching up with you, I'm so grateful for your little bundle with fleece that you sent me. Your alpaca spin is so beautiful, I'm so glad that we could connect! For the Eastwind, have you considered ripping back from the cast on edge instead of starting again? Sending lots of love.
Thank you Alexandra! I'm so grateful I got to work with your lovely alpaca - the rolags were dreamy to work with and having something processed by you was just special <3 I didn't actually know you can rip back from the cast on edge. I always thought you could only rip back from the latest point you were working on. In that case, this is the perfect solution and I will be ripping it back from there and redoing the contrast edge in another colour. Thank you for the helpful tip. I love the fact that I get so much knitting knowledge/information through simply podcasting my knitting journey :-)
The colours of the yuiponcho are gorgeous!!! I love that orange 🙂
Thank you <3
This is so useful, thanks so much for the close-ups.
You are so welcome!
💗🧶💗🧶💗🧶💗🧶💗🧶💗
I know this may be an older video, and I can't recall if you've expanded out into more socks, but give Rustik socks by Tania Barley, a try. You can omit the fancy ribbing at the top, but it's a simple heel and pretty much gives you any size to knit with any yarn as long as you know your gauge.
Thank you for the suggestion! I love this designer's aesthetic and will give the pattern a look :-)
Does anyone know what the weight of the actual card cone is?
I once weighed it and from memory I believe it was 30g approx.
Thank you for the review!! I’ve been looking for the Lykke set but didn’t know where to buy got lucky to have found your video 🍀
Thank you for mentioning the horrors of watching so many innocent people being killed, The children especially has been so hard to take. I think many people are afraid to mention anything about the beautiful people of P@lest1ne for far of losing audience, being called anti-semitic or just damn afraid. I watch many podcasts , and have started dropping quite a few because even a single mention of how awful things are would be something. I subscribed to your channel just because of this. Beautiful yarns and colours, and did enjoy your video. May we all find some solace in our knitting and other creativity in order to just get through our days.
Thank you for your message. I know it's taken a while to reply but I had to think on it what I wanted to say. I understand where you are coming from. When we watch our favourite podcasters we hope they can give us a bit of acknowledgement that they too are being affected by the horrors that we are all seeing unfold in that part of the world. In some sort of weird way sharing your combined grief at the same horror has a type of reassurance to it. But It's always best to give people the benefit of the doubt and if they haven't mentioned it or acknowledged then maybe that is their way of coping with the awfulness of what they are seeing. Maybe their podcast is their main means of solace - a refuge they can go into, to destress and escape the horrors of the world. And people are attacked for expressing views that those in control don't want us to hold. Because they have the power to control media narratives via influence or bot farms etc. The stress from this backlash can be very real and not everyone is equipped for it. Also for some it is simply too difficult to speak about it. I still find it very hard to vocalise on my actual podcast without breaking down and just feeling like I don't want to do the podcast (such an inconsequential thing) after mentioning the evilness that a whole nation is being subjected to. The more I have witnessed what is going on the more I feel the importance of being kind to each other and holding onto our humanity. Because we are literally seeing a people lose theirs through committing and/or the support of such incredibly evil actions.
@@CedarTreesBumblebees thank you so very much for this. I agree with the being kind, and do try really hard to keep that in the forefront of my mind. And it is a scary time right now. I look forward to watching more of your podcasts 💕
Does the crochet edge affect the stretch at all ? This is my happy hour watching all your knits with all the lovely yarns :)
Thank you for the lovely comment <3 and yes the crotchet edge does affect the stretch but I find I can still easily slip it over my head so it's not an issue :-)
That´s really good to know. Ivé never seen the crochet edge before and it looks really good. Might try it :) @@CedarTreesBumblebees
