I'm 66 and from just north of Pittsburgh and Donnie Iris is one of our own. I was in a local restaurant (The Springfield Grille) in Mars PA about 8-9 years ago and Donnie was 2 people away from me at the bar waiting for his table. I struck up a conversation with an older woman next to me at the bar and I related how big a part of my youth Donnie Iris' music was.. I told her that on my first day of dental school 1982 in NYC, I awoke and headed to the bathroom on my dorm floor. As I neared the bathroom, I hear somebody right across the hall crank up "Ah Leah"(released in 1980) on his stereo LOUD. I'm staring at the door thinking "how do they know about Donnie Iris?" and this young Asian dude comes out of his room head banging to the song.I thought only we knew about Donnie and I told the kid all my Donnie Iris stories. He said that he just heard the song two days before and he made a special trip to Tower Records to get it before school started. My bar neighbor had listened to my story intently and maintained a gentle smile throughout. I finally said, "I'm sorry, I must be boring you. May I buy you a drink?" I stuck out my hand and we shook hands as I introduced myself. "I'm Ron" I said. She said, "I'll take a raincheck on the drink. Our table is ready." I realized then that she was in Donnie Iris' party that night. "It was nice talking with you" she said and finished with " I'm Leah" .
