I've been soldering electronics regularly for 55 years; the Weller "Red Line" of soldering equipment is overpriced junk, including the $65 soldering "station" sold at Home Depot. Harbor Freight's $45 Schneider soldering station is a much better unit and includes actual up/down heat control (the Weller only allows you to tutn the supplied 40 watt iron *down*). I posted a tear down review and comparison of them on my channel. As for your soldering, I agree that you definitely need to learn how to solder better. You should have stuck with the chisel tip, which is more appropriate for this type of work; one should always use the largest, heaviest tip that you can get away with for the size of the work you're doing, because the heavier tip has more thermal mass and will more efficiently transfer heat into the work. Soldering quickly and efficiently is all about rapid heat transfer: Wipe the tip clean on the lightly dampened , special sponge made for this specific purpose ---- A brass wool tip cleaner is even better and my preferred method ---- Put a little dab of molten sotter onto the tip and then wipe it again and then apply the tip to the connection. The thin coating (don't use a big drop) of molten solder adhering to the tip will become the transfer medium for heat from the tip into the ring terminal or other item being soldered, and after a couple seconds of heating the connection you apply solder to the connection, but not directly to the tip. You didn't tin the tip of the iron first, which is the main reason thst you were getting inadequate heat transfer to the terminals, which is why it took so long for the solder to melt and (barely) flow. The other main problem is that you clipped the terminals directly into the metal alligator clips of your little "helping hands" device, which meant that most of the heat from the soldering iron was being sucked away into the jaws of the alligator clips, which acted as a heat sink. You need to slip some heat shrink or some other kind of soft rubber or plastic tubing over the toothed jaws of the alligator clips and then clip your wires into the helping hands about a half-inchinch away from where you are soldering. The purpose of insulating the jaws of the alligator clips is so that as the heat transmits up the wire when you're soldering the connection, the alligator clips won't damage the wire's insulation, which may be softened from within by the heat transmitted up inside the wire. This is another reason why it's important to tin the tip of your iron and use a tip that will give you quick, efficient heat transfer so that you can get in and get out fast when you're soldering. If this was a circuit board you were soldering to you would probably find yourself overheating the copper foils, delaminating them, and lifting them right off of the board. There's no shame in an initial struggle to achieve good, reliable solder connections; but, *it's a skill set that anyone can learn*. Better quality equipment might not be strictly necessary but it definitely helps, especially if you are new to the process. An experienced electronics technician can in some cases get by with inferior equipment simply because of their long experience, because they know how the process is supposed to look and feel, but the newbies won't necessarily know where they're going wrong, and if the equipment is less than ideal it can become a stumbling block to the point where the newbie thinks they're just not good enough and gives up, which would be a shame. Unfortunately, there's a lot of cheesy inadequate equipment being purchased by newbies directly from China ( Including some inexpensive, fancy looking, but poorly designed, clones of professional-grade soldering equipment); and some of the soldering tutorials I have seen on TH-cam are almost completely wrong-headed. Some years back, the Big Clive channel posted a really good video about soldering; If you want to improve your skills so that you don't struggle at this his video would be a good place to start. And don't forget that I posted a review of inexpensive Harbor Freight and Weller soldering stations on my channel, along with some tips about soldering accessories, including the actual and all-important tips.
