    Here's another prime example: using a waterfall chart for finance data. When looking at expenses, coloring the increases with red makes sense. When looking at revenue or margins, coloring the increases with green makes sense.

    • @joshbrindley5652
      @joshbrindley5652 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well yeah, that's the point right. By formatting a graph in different ways you can change the story of it, without changing the data. So what does that tell us? That formatting is important. A bad actor could, like you said, manipulate people to the wrong conclusion (and they do all the time!) But, a totally innocent person could be accidently making people take the wrong conclusion because they just didn't realise the formatting was doing it. I see that all the time. The graph makes total sense to the author because they're familiar with the data and what they tried to say. But the audience might not see it the same way

    • @joshbrindley5652
      @joshbrindley5652 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've been in that situation but you have a few options. 1. Use different levels of saturation and brightness to create a colour hierarchy. 2. Often companies have accent colours in their official formatting standards, which should give you some more choices. 3. Use colour sparingly. You may have to use a particular colour, but you don't always need to use colour. Use company colours to highlight the most important information and use natural grey or just a dull or unsaturated version for less important data points.

    Ah, Blockbuster. Now there's a name that brings a tear to this old man's eye. Back in my day, we didn't have all this "streaming" nonsense, no sir! If you wanted to watch a movie, you had to get in your car, drive to the local Blockbuster, and walk through those glorious aisles lined with rows and rows of VHS tapes. Now, if you were clever, and I like to think I was back in the day, you'd have a "system" for picking out the right films. You couldn't just walk in and grab the first thing you saw-no, no, no! You had to browse, my friend. The joy of slowly perusing the shelves, avoiding eye contact with the teenager behind the counter who'd seen you rent RoboCop three weeks in a row. But let me tell you the real art form: renting those adult VHS tapes. That's right. Blockbuster had a back corner, tucked away like some forbidden treasure, where they kept the "mature" films. Now, of course, it wasn’t like those full-on adult stores-I wasn’t that shameless. But you'd have a few of those... ahem... "erotic thrillers," cleverly disguised as regular movies. They weren’t outright about it. They had titles like "Tropical Heat" or "Dangerous Passions." It was like a secret code among us older gentlemen. You’d give a little nod if you saw someone else browsing that section-kind of like a secret club, except your membership card was shame and a weak excuse about the “compelling storyline.” Now, the trick was hiding those tapes from the missus. My wife, God bless her, was as sharp as a tack when it came to catching me doing something I shouldn’t. But Blockbuster nights? I had it down to a science. I'd rent something "respectable," like The Hunt for Red October-a nice, long movie that she'd fall asleep to about halfway through-and then, after she was snoring, out would come the "real" movie. I'd pop in Tropical Heat or whatever steamy flick I’d snuck into the bottom of the Blockbuster bag, and, boy, let me tell you, there was nothing like watching 240p grainy seduction scenes with the volume just low enough so my wife wouldn’t wake up and ask why there was moaning coming from the TV. Oh, and don’t get me started on the late fees. They’d hit you harder than a divorce lawyer, especially when you had to sneak back into the store to return the tapes without your wife wondering why that one movie always seemed overdue. “Oh, must’ve been a mistake, honey. I guess I forgot to return that documentary on... uh... civil engineering.” Kids these days with their Netflix and Chill don’t know jack about real movie rentals. It was a mission, a quest. Every time I pulled off a Blockbuster run, it felt like I was some kind of James Bond, dodging laser alarms and smuggling forbidden VHSs right under the nose of the most terrifying villain of all: my wife. Those were the days, my friends. I miss 'em.

      When working in a group, demonstrate ways that you can verify the data is clean and the analysis has been thorough. Present your final work using a data storytelling structure. Always make the work re-produceable. You wouldn't belive the number of times if done some sort of cleaning/transforming process, thinking its a ome off. Only to find out something has changed and I need to do it again and I didn't save the process.

    • @joshbrindley5652
      @joshbrindley5652 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad you liked them. If I were to do it today, I would do more of a story. I would start by plotting all the typical calls received in a week and a 24 hour period and would create a metric, like 'efficiency' which would be what percentage of calls made were answered. That would be something like 79%. Then I would say what increasing this efficiency means, by relating customer satisfaction to missed calls for example. This is like planting the seed, so the audience can piece together more calls is better and we have an opportunity to get more calls. Then I would hit them with the fact that changing shift times means a higher efficiency. So I have taken them on the journey. Rather than just skipping to the end and telling them to change shift timings
