How to Use Incremental Refresh for Lightning-Fast Power BI Dataflows | A Complete Guide
Unlock the power of incremental refresh in Power BI Dataflows with this comprehensive deep-dive tutorial! 🚀
In this video, I’ll guide you through the essential steps to set up incremental refresh, a feature that can significantly improve your data refresh times and overall performance. We'll start with the theory behind incremental refresh, followed by a practical setup demonstration using SQL as the data source.
I’ll also show you how to configure different incremental refresh policies, such as storing one year, four quarters, and twelve months of historical data, and compare the outcomes.
But that’s not all! We’ll discuss the benefits, best practices, and limitations of using incremental refresh in Power BI Dataflows.
You’ll learn how to navigate some of the challenges, like handling future dates, and discover ways to optimise your Dataflows for faster and more reliable performance. Plus, stay tuned for a sneak peek at a future tutorial where I’ll share a method to manage data incrementally without needing a premium licence.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced Power BI user, this tutorial has something for you. Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and leave your thoughts in the comments below - I’m here to help you get the most out of your Power BI journey!

@@BILingualAnalytics Thanks for the response 👍, it's in power query editor and I have selected load more option where I could see all the data. Actually the number of rows are accurate and I can see the data after I have cross verified today but the problem is i was not able to get the correct data due to date field . In power query editor the dates are by default taking mm dd yyy and I tried changing it based on csv date field format but still it's just taking the date field as it's own. Example in csv file if date is 12( dec) / 08(dd)/2024 but in power query it's taking 08( Aug)/12(dd)/2024. FYI- csv file has a dynamic content and it has 100 k + data, and even in csv I was not able to change the date , it's just don't change... Nit sure if I ve explained my prob here correctly, plz assit if you could.

@@pragas4288 oh okay, so it's a data type/conversion issue. instead of just using 'Date' as a type try to use 'Locale' and specify the date format (ie US/AU/GB/etc). This way you can ensure the right format will be used and your figures will align :)

Hey see i am working on a Use case for my project : CRR Tuning. Tech stack : PowerBI, SQL Server (Onprem solution - strictly everything is on Onprem for security reasons binded with a Onprem gateway), PowerApps ( for writeback), Power automate (for dynamic flows/triggers). The Implementation we seek is: To provide the option to end users such that they create and select an snapshot of the reference tables ... to be precise for context we have 2 types of data ... a). reference data of Actimize risk factors b). static data - this is the action item score record wise to compute using the reference data. So here we need to carefully assess how best without any conflict work on a implementation that is scalable and reliable. Suppose they wish to create almost 40 snapshots of the reference data after there wishful changes done to the data using writebacks powered by PowerApps screen. Now the phase-1 is clear that we need to allow the users to have this option of creating snapshots [state of the reference datas tables backed-up as a historical visit or reference] ______ Now phase-2 is to bring these simulation as selected in PowerBI report such that they view the snapshot of static data scores using the reference data at that point of time while saving as simulation1 strictly all the recalculations should be done in sql server using sql queries itself (even the parameterization of queries) if needed. This should be read-only and we need to exit the simulation mode to continue making regular changes. Hey actually we wish to save both the reference data and static data configuration and outputs but due to constraint on storage we are left with storage of reference data itself as at day end the static scores are done calculating using reference data. Hey see the main thing that connects each phase is 1. First the user as usual views our report and makes all the changes in the reference data using writebacks through power app screen embedded as a visual in PowerBI. ---> This portion of implementation is done up and running completely, don't include in our solution walkthrough directly assume that this exists. 2. Now after all the changes are done, they will have an option to click on a button to save an snapshot (again we are not still sure how the data is saved for better retrieval). 3. Now once we have few snapshots created likewise, the end user will use the options and view snapshots in PowerBI and once they select a specific snapshot they should view the reference table data at that point of time ... this should be read-only and why this matters is because the static data scoring is dependent on reference data so new changed reference data means recalculation of these in sql server and updated visuals with new data. So in simple terms when we select that specific snapshot of reference data tables the whole report recalculates in sql server using sql query or inbuilt functionality based the static data scores change as the reference data as been modified with which we tend to calculate the static data scores. 4. This should be read-only and has to be able exit this simulation mode to normal mode where they can edit and continue with the snapshot creation and such. ___ X ___ A heads-up would be for you to learn and master and build some expertise on how to create a snapshot based off multiple tables data at once in one single changelog table corresponding to the snapshot we work. second heads-up being how to load selective data like if suppose snapshot 2 is selected then the data that is held by snapshot 2 should be used in the PowerBI Reporting which is different from our current data pre-selection.

Yes I have done that previously. If you want to get started and learn it I suggest SWAPI as it has a lot of good learning points

Szia.

The most important thing is to keep trying. It takes time to master both hard and soft skills. You can find lots of great tutorials online, but first make a decision on what career path (or role) sounds like you
